About us

NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM) is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the Commander MARCOM is the prime maritime advisor to the Alliance. Like its land and air counterparts (LANDCOM & AIRCOM), MARCOM answers directly to NATO’s Allied Command Operations (ACO) which is located in Mons, Belgium. Located in Northwood, outside London, United Kingdom, it is composed of a multinational headquarters manned by 300 officers, petty officers and civilians from most NATO countries. MARCOM includes three subordinate commands co-located in Northwood for coordination on specific areas of maritime engagement and Allied forces when assigned to NATO. These commands are as follows: Submarines NATO, which directs submarines under NATO operational control; Maritime Air NATO, which directs the activities of Maritime Patrol Aircraft under NATO operational control; and the NATO Shipping Centre, which is a direct liaison with the wider commercial shipping community. MARCOM also leads four Standing Maritime Groups which are a multinational, integrated maritime force made up of vessels from various allied countries. These vessels are continuously available to NATO to perform different tasks ranging from participating in exercises to conducting operational missions. These groups provide NATO with a continuous maritime capability for operations and other activities in peacetime and in periods of crisis and conflict. They also help to establish Alliance presence, demonstrate solidarity, conduct visits to different countries, support transformation and provide a variety of maritime military capabilities to ongoing missions. The number of ships in each group varies based on the requirements for the group and the availability of Allied Navy ships. • NATO has reinforced its partnership with the civilian shipping community through Exercise Dynamic Master 25, led by the NATO Shipping Centre (NSC). The exercise equips staff with the skills to guide, reassure, and support merchant vessels during crises or NATO operations, strengthening civil–military maritime coordination and ensuring safer, more efficient maritime operations. Personnel from 16 Allied nations participated in realistic scenarios covering shipping traffic, cyber threats, and undersea infrastructure protection. Teams were deployed to key ports across Europe - Mallorca, Piraeus, Portsmouth, and Toulon - to brief ships, local companies, and authorities on NATO’s vigilance activities, naval cooperation & guidance for shipping (NCAGS) and interoperability between Allied forces. Dynamic Master 25 underscores NATO’s commitment to maintaining readiness, fostering international cooperation, and safeguarding global maritime trade. • Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) has launched a new operational phase in the Mediterranean Sea, departing Taranto after a scheduled port visit. As one of NATO’s four permanent multinational maritime task groups, SNMG2 plays a vital role within the Allied Reaction Force (ARF), ensuring a continuous, high-readiness Allied presence across the region. Under the command of Rear Admiral Francesco Iavazzo (Italian Navy), the task group currently includes Italian flagship ITS Carlo Bergamini, HMCS St. John’s (Canada) and ESPS Cantabria (Spain). SNMG2 contributes to maritime security, freedom of navigation, and regional stability, while strengthening cooperation with partners through the Mediterranean Dialogue, NATO’s partnership framework with seven non-NATO nations across North Africa and the Middle East. NATO’s continuous maritime presence in the Mediterranean underscores Allied unity, deterrence, and a shared commitment to keeping vital sea lanes open, safe, and secure, protecting both Europe and the wider region. • NATO Minehunters have strengthened cooperation during Turkish-led Exercise NUSRET 2025. Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two (SNMCMG2) wrapped up its participation in NUSRET 2025, which took place between 24 – 31 October. The annual exercise enhances interoperability and mine countermeasures proficiency among Allied and Partner nations. Participating units included ITS Thaon di Revel (flagship), HS Evropi, ITS Crotone, ESPS Sella and TCG Akçakoca. During the exercise, the group conducted a photo exercise (PHOTEX) with 11 naval units and successfully detected and recovered seven dummy mines using ROVs, demonstrating precision, teamwork and NATO’s commitment to maritime safety. Exercises like NUSRET 2025 strengthen Allied readiness and ensure the security of key maritime routes. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVViq_D8

  • Getting to Know the NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) – Part 2 In this new video, Captain Markussen explains what constitutes suspicious activity at sea and how the maritime community can report such activity to the NATO Shipping Centre. The NSC acts as the bridge between NATO Allied Naval Forces and the commercial shipping industry, ensuring rapid information sharing and situational awareness. Reporting suspicious behaviour — such as irregular vessel movements, unexplained communications, or unsafe interactions at sea — helps strengthen maritime security and early warning across NATO’s areas of operation. Through cooperation and shared awareness, the NSC continues to safeguard freedom of navigation and protect the global flow of trade. #WeAreNATO #NSC #MaritimeSecurity
