Nearly everyone experiences some form of acne in their lifetime. It can range from a few spots on the face, neck, back or chest to a more severe problem with painful lumps under the skin. Read a blog by Dr Beibei Du-Harpur, a dermatologist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer with St John's Institute of Dermatology at King's College London, about how research is busting myths and changing acne treatments. https://lnkd.in/eDrjz9cB

We've been celebrating #OpenAccessWeek this week. At NIHR, we’re committed to ensuring that the findings from the research we fund are freely and openly available 📖 Open Access helps us maximise the reach and impact of research - supporting transparency and innovation in health and care. Funding research means generating knowledge that belongs to everyone - from the communities who help create it through public and patient involvement, to the researchers and practitioners who build upon it, and the wider health and care community who can apply it in diverse contexts. 💬 "Dementia continues to pose challenges in many ways. Although we have made progress through science, collaboration, and community participation, it is essential we continue to develop innovative tools to support those living with dementia." "This announcement signifies a drive to invest in research to improve diagnosis, as we know what a difference a high quality and timely diagnosis can make. It will complement existing research investments made by National Institute for Health and Care Research and other funders, working together with a shared goal of improving the lives of those impacted by dementia." - NIHR CEO Lucy Chappell
Over 1 million people in the UK have dementia - a number expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. That's why we’re launching a new UK Research and Innovation scientific research challenge is being launched to diagnose and treat it faster. Dr Zubir Ahmed MP and Lord Vallance toured the labs at UK Dementia Research Institute where new tests and treatments are being developed. Advanced blood tests can detect symptoms before traditional methods, meaning patients can be treated sooner, and AI-powered assistants can help remember tasks or support brain training exercises. This initiative is a key part of our work to improve care for people with dementia in our 10 Year Health Plan. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e3MG_63t

NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) reposted this
The NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research)'s Academy is our flagship scheme which gives training and support to the UK's academic research workforce. The theme of this year's Academy Members Conference was 'Clinic to Community' - taking research through the pipeline and into the health and care system, across all settings. In my opening address, I spoke on the pivotal role the NIHR has in making research and innovation everybody's business. The NIHR's Academy Members are key to embedding research into health and care, closely aligned to the 10 Year Plan's ambition to enable a faster spread of innovation. Research can only achieve its greatest impact if it is inclusive and reflects the populations we serve. That is why the NIHR has made research inclusion a condition of funding, formalising the requirement for all our applicants to show how they will involve underrepresented groups in their studies. In my own field of pregnancy, we know that we must champion offering wider inclusion of pregnant women to increase access to safe and effective treatments. Empowering and supporting our researchers to prioritise research inclusion will help shift the dial in health inequity.

Gulliver was diagnosed with clinical depression at 19. For years, he struggled with extremely low mood, anxiety, frequent panic attacks and occasional paranoia. 💊 He tried a range of treatments, including antidepressants and talking therapies. But nothing helped with his symptoms. 📱 Then his mother came across a clinical trial called PAX-D on Facebook. As a therapist, she would receive a lot of information about mental health studies and thought the trial could help her son. The study was testing whether a drug commonly used for Parkinson’s disease could help with treatment-resistant depression. Unlike antidepressants, which target serotonin, pramipexole mimics dopamine, which influences the energy with which people pursue goals. He continued to take pramipexole after the trial concluded. A year ago, he stopped taking the drug, or any other antidepressants. It is the longest he has been off medication since he was 19. This week is #OpenAccessWeek and the theme is 'Who truly owns our knowledge?'. At NIHR, our Open Access publication policy is focused on our expectations in relation to publishing academic, peer-reviewed journal articles - but this is just one way in which our researchers may choose to disseminate their research findings. We recognise and encourage a diversity of approaches to disseminating research findings so that people can make use of them. We are also committed to making sure that, when we assess research outputs during funding decisions, we consider the intrinsic merit of the work and not the journal in which it is published. #OAWeek2025 Find out more about NIHR Open Research in the comments below ⬇️
