It's World Mental Health Day. In the UK we are fortunate to have access to many free resources to support employees and businesses. As an SME these resources are invaluable and complement the professional HR guidance that we procure. One such resource is ACAS. https://lnkd.in/e96Rf8uJ

On 25th June, the Knutsford based team from Plus-Project Ltd spent the day in Moss Side, Manchester volunteering with a local Community Interest Company (CIC). Based at The Boiler House, the activities were organised through Sow the City whose aim is to green urban spaces as well as provide skills training and support in local communities. They also grow mushrooms (using coffee grinds sourced from a well-known coffee chain) and donate them to a local food bank. Moss Side is home to many but lacks communal areas where residents can meet and grow things. Connecting people with nature improves well-being especially if they can interact with others, see the success of their labours, and spend time outdoors. A community garden is a wonderful place to do that, as people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and interests can participate and are welcome. With renewed energy Sow The City are developing the Grierson Street Garden. This was the focus of our volunteering efforts and our role was to continue the efforts of the organisation and local community members. As a team of 14 people we were able to make an impact because, as the saying goes, “many hands make light work”. Led by Laura and Lad from Sow The City we divided into groups to: · Create bags of mushroom mulch ready for the growing room · Construct two 14-foot-long raised beds · Weed already established raised beds · Create a climbing structure for produce such as beans or tomatoes · Sort a large pile of donated wood, removing nails and other sharp items · Paint a long wall in preparation for a mural that Sow The City will design and create in collaboration with local community members, to illustrate Moss Side’s past and present Volunteering enabled us to develop and showcase practical skills, vastly different from our desk-based roles. Joanna Pye demonstrated impressive construction skills that she hopes to use to build raised beds at home. Michael Dymond’s personal gardening experience led to the creation of a composting bin, and Rachael Bell, PhD, Susan Lovick and Sonia Powell painted for hours. The team’s critical thinking skills were utilised as Helen Broadhurst constructed a complex climbing structure and Stuart Spencer analysed the best way to build the enormous, raised beds. During our time in Moss Side local residents visited the community garden to find out more about what we were doing and share their stories. It was a fabulous, fun physical day, and we enjoyed spending time away from our desks, connecting to nature, and doing something positive for the environment and local community. Thanks for having us and we hope that residents enjoy many hours in the community garden. #corporatesocialresponsibility #volunteering #communityengagement

A few weeks ago our team in Poland spent their volunteering day with the house staff at Ronald Macdonald House in Warsaw. The team were delighted to help in a small way by deep cleaning common areas and preparing a delicious homemade meal for all the families in residence. https://lnkd.in/ewxWCqBh The foundation supports families by providing a place to stay when they have premature or very sick babies or children admitted to hospital for long periods of time. In addition to a much needed place to rest, families can make meals, their other children can play, and they can share their feelings with families in a similar situation. The "houses" provide a vital role in supporting families at a most stressful and difficult time. Unbeknown to our team in Poland, several members of the Plus-Project Team have relied on the support of the Ronald Macdonald House Foundation. Our COO Philip Rowe shared this: "In September 2012, our youngest daughter was born in Manchester 8 weeks premature and was so critically ill that she was immediately rushed to intensive care. In those very darkest of times, Ronald McDonald House in Manchester was an unbelievable help with its home away from home philosophy. Our daughter is nearly 13 now and doing great and it was amazing and poignant and almost full circle to see colleagues from Plus-Project Poland assisting at a Ronald McDonald house as part of Plus-Project's community engagement work and not knowing any of my backstory." We are truly delighted that our team in Warsaw selected a project that clearly is important to families who are supported at a most difficult time, and connected with members of our own team. #volunteeringforgood #corporatesocialresponsibility Plus-Project Ltd
