ResponsibleSteel™ is pleased to welcome Population and Development Initiative (PDI TANZANIA) as our newest member. Established in 2021, PDI is a national NGO operating in Tanzania’s Kigoma and Geita regions. It delivers programmes that raise responsible gold mining awareness for more responsible gold mining, promote social accountability for water and sanitation services, and advance environmental education in challenging contexts. Since its founding, PDI has collaborated with partners including the Responsible Mining Foundation and the Hilden Charitable Fund, engaging 30 ‘agents of change’ and acting as a community radar to support improved responsible gold mining practices. PDI describes itself as a home of leaders and experts building capacities and partnerships among communities, civil society organisations, and mining companies to advance a responsible mining agenda that supports both community well-being and environmental sustainability. “We at the Population and Development Initiative (PDI) are delighted to receive the good news that we are now part of the ResponsibleSteel community. Since 2021, we have been addressing socioeconomic, environmental, and human rights issues among mining communities, and we are open to sharing our experiences and case studies from this work. Having reviewed the ResponsibleSteel Sstandards, we see them as a strong pathway towards responsible steel production. We will promote these Standards in Tanzania and across our wider networks in Africa. As a member, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to making steel production a responsible sector that supports the Sustainable Development Goals. We will play our part, learn from others, and help promote a more responsible global steel sector.” – Prisca Kassile, Chairperson, Population and Development Initiative (PDI) ResponsibleSteel looks forward to working with PDI as it continues to support responsible practices across the mining and steel value chains. #ResponsibleSteel #ResponsibleMining #SustainableDevelopment #NewMember #Tanzania #SteelIndustry

The steel industry and its stakeholders are under increasing scrutiny to address social and environmental impacts. ResponsibleSteel certification provides tangible data and independent assurance to buyers and investors that the steel they procure or invest in meets some of the highest industry standards. Since the development of the first ‘straw man’ draft standard in 2017 to the announcement of the first Certified Steel at Climate Week last year, ResponsibleSteel has been at the forefront of setting the benchmark for responsibly produced steel. Our ‘Strength to Strength’ campaign has provoked new questions and discussions about how certification can drive progress in the industry and support steel buyers and investors in meeting their own sustainability goals. Certified Steel gives steel buyers and investors: ✅ Confidence that steelmakers meet the highest social and environmental standards ✅ Clear, credible emissions data to enable easier decision-making ✅ Reduced supply chain and financial risks, protecting reputation and value The need for responsibly produced low-emission and near-zero steel is only growing. Certified Steel provides the transparency and insight needed to future-proof business decisions and safeguard people and the planet. Last week in Brussels, ResponsibleSteel™ brought together steelmakers, customers, NGOs, officials, standards bodies, and auditors to tackle the challenges of driving low-emissions steel production. The discussion explored how international standards like ResponsibleSteel can support the Clean Industrial Deal by providing credible, ready-to-use solutions, tools to enable alignment across standards, and strong assurance systems to ensure data is verified and claims are trustworthy. Many thanks to everyone who contributed - and watch this space for our upcoming policy paper!
A busy week in Brussels last week! Glad to see discussions warming up with the Commission on the design of a low emissions steel label to catalyse lead markets. This is clearly now sitting firmly alongside the EU ETS/CBAM in the toolbox of policy mechanisms designed to drive the economics of low emissions steelmaking. Yet we now have 3 different ways of accounting for emissions across the EU ETS, the CBAM and a lead market label, all based on the same building blocks, but all different, obscuring the clarity of what a carbon price or a low emissions premium should apply to. Increased complexity brings with it increased administrative burden and increased risk of error. So the path to the CBAM delivering trusted data on which a carbon price should be paid is extremely challenging! And there is another playing field to level out: that of the social, environmental and governance practices upheld by steelmakers and their suppliers across the world. At a ResponsibleSteel™ convening in Brussels last week, steelmakers, customers, NGOs, Brussels officials, standards bodies and auditors candidly discussed these challenges, and explored ways in which international; standards such as ResponsibleSteel can support the acceleration of the Clean Industrial Deal, by offering credible shelf-ready solutions, robust navigation pathways, tools to enable interoperability with other standards and strong assurance systems to ensure data is strictly verified and claims are credible. Many thanks to all of you that attended and contributed your thoughts. Steel sustainability isn’t just about cutting emissions. Steel impacts people, communities, and the environment in many ways, from labour rights and health & safety, to water, biodiversity, and pollution. Steel buyers and investors need confidence that all these issues are being addressed, as well as decarbonisation. That’s why the ResponsibleSteel International Production Standard is built on 13 Principles, providing a complete ESG framework for responsible steelmaking which covers: 🏭 Climate action and decarbonisation ⛏️ Responsible sourcing 👷 Labour rights and worker safety 👥 Human rights and community engagement 🌳 Water stewardship, biodiversity, and environmental impacts With one Standard and 13 Principles, ResponsibleSteel certification gives buyers and investors the assurance they need to reduce risk, strengthen supply chains, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. #ResponsibleSteel #SustainabilityStandard #Steel #ESG #Decarbonisation
