When data generated as a result of academic research is well managed and shared openly, it enables ideas to flourish, and allows for stronger, more rigorous academic debate. At Taylor & Francis we support the sharing of data generated during the course of a research project. With the help of DataSeer, an AI solution provider, we discovered that across a sample of over 8,000 Taylor & Francis journal articles published in 2023, 52% included a data availability statement. This shows a very high adoption from researchers in data sharing. Nine years ago, Thorsten Wuest and his team published a research paper that has since had over 100,000 views. Entitled “Machine learning in manufacturing: advantages, challenges, and applications,” this work was at the forefront of the AI revolution in that sector, and has received more than a thousand visits each month since its publication, along with almost 600 citations. We asked Dr. Wuest, now globally recognized as one of SME’s 20 most influential professors in smart manufacturing, how publishing this article open access has impacted its reach. This month we’re spotlighting research and researchers from Australia and New Zealand. Meet Professor Joseph M. Cheer, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Tourism Geographies. Our team sat down with Professor Cheer to ask him about the work he does and his aspirations for the journal “Tourism Geographies.” This journal publishes critical, multidisciplinary work from social science fields such as geography, anthropology, sociology, area studies, urban and regional planning, environmental studies, and geospatial sciences. Professor Cheer explains the importance of connecting work with a broad audience: “Global accessibility is critical.
