🚨 BREAKING: Primary schools are about to be the 'front line' of financial education. Today's national curriculum review from the Department for Education has made one message very clear: Financial literacy is not a “do it later” area of learning. It also lays bare what many commentators have already pointed out: ➡️ Money habits are formed in early childhood. ➡️ Today's kids are already spending online, often unsupervised. ➡️ Relying on parents to teach children about money widens disadvantage. So the curriculum will be shifting: 👉 Citizenship becomes statutory in KS1/2 👉 Real-world financial learning moves into primary 👉 Maths provides skills → Citizenship provides context We’ve broken the big financial education headlines down into 9 quick insights for school leaders and curriculum leads - see below 👇 This is a big moment — and a big opportunity 🙂 #Education #PrimaryEducation #Curriculum #CitizenshipEducation #FinancialEducation #EdLeadership #SLTchat #TeachingAndLearning #PSHE #PrimaryTeachers #LifeSkills #DigitalLiteracy #FutureReady #ClosingTheGap #RealWorldLearning #EducationReform #SkillsForLife

Ever wondered why many bank buildings look like Ancient Greek temples? The answer might surprise you! For thousands of years, people have had two important money needs: ➡️ 1) a safe place to deposit money and ➡️ 2) a trustworthy way to borrow. The ancient Greeks were amongst the first civilisations to bring both functions together in one place. Find out below how this evolved into the modern banking system of today! 👇 #history #financialeducation #moneyskills #historyofmoney #moneyhistory #economics #KS2 #primaryschool #primaryeducation #crosscurricular #banking

Does financial education really work? 🤔 A major meta-study by Gonzalo Llamosas García (Universidad de Cantabria) and Cristina Mazas Pérez-Oleaga (Universidad Europea del Atlántico) has just answered that question, and helped teachers and school leaders everywhere to separate the signal from the noise in terms of what does and doesn't lead to better outcomes for pupils. Here's the TL;DR: What works: ✅ Active, real-world learning (not lectures) ✅ Reinforcement and follow-up ✅ Habit-building, not just fact-learning What doesn’t: ❌ One-off “drop-in” sessions ❌ Paying people to turn up ❌ Relying on tech without teaching For many, this will feel like confirmation of what great teachers already know: quality, context, and conversation matter more than quantity of lessons or "engagement" gimmicks. 💡 If you had to choose just one change that would make financial education more effective in schools, what would it be? "1% of primary school teachers believe that their students’ level of financial literacy is adequate." 😮 ONE PERCENT! Let that sink in. The report from the Social Market Foundation has a clear message: when it comes to primary financial education, the warning lights on our dashboard are blinking red 🚨. With such poor levels of adult financial literacy here in the UK, and with children developing their attitudes and habits towards money around age 7, we cannot continue to neglect the chance to turn the ship around and help #GenAlpha to be the first to really 'get' money. Talk Money Week exists because silence around money causes problems. 🚨 And yet . . . We’re still largely silent with children when it comes to money. 🤐 Children notice everything — holidays, houses, “why can they afford that and we can’t?” Their beliefs about money are being shaped long before we give them language to understand it. By age 7, money habits are already forming. Still, financial education barely happens in most primary schools. 😟 This week, we look at some simple steps schools can take to #StartTheConversation this Talk Money Week (an initiative from the Money and Pensions Service).🙌 👉 What’s more damaging — talking to children about money too soon, or not talking about it at all? #StartTheConversation #financialeducation #primaryschools #moneyskills #moneyconfidence #futureskills #PSHE #KS2 #UKschools #schoolleadership

How well are we preparing pupils for the adult world of the 2030s? 👦 ➡️ 👨💼 That’s the question quietly running through this year’s Independent Schools Inspectorate review. 🔍 Inspectors reported that some schools need to strengthen PSHE so that 'pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of economics and managing finances.' 💷📈 This isn’t about ticking a compliance box. ❌ It’s about value. ✅ Parents are asking: "What does my child get here that they won’t get elsewhere?" 🤔 And increasingly, inspectors are asking the same — but through a future-readiness lens. 🔎 🔹 Academic excellence is no longer the whole story. 🔹 Schools are now expected to show: ✔ Economic and financial education ✔ Independent, high-quality careers guidance ✔ Skills for life beyond exams The challenge is clear. So is the opportunity. Schools that can show, not just say, that pupils understand money, choices, careers and the economy will stand apart to parents, inspectors and universities alike. 🥇 How is your school meeting this need in today's independent schools landscape? Tell us in the comments! 💬 #IndependentSchools #ISIInspection #FutureReadyEducation #FinancialEducation #PSHE #CurriculumDevelopment #EducationLeadership #SkillsForLife

The Independent Schools Inspectorate's (ISI) Annual Review of Inspections for 24/25 is out and its message on financial and economics educations is clear: the sector can do better. 🧑🏻🏫 However, look within these findings and there are clear opportunities for independent schools to turn what has sometimes been a weakness into a strength. 💪 In the context of falling rolls and the pressures of VAT on fees, how independent schools set their pupils up with practical skills for the world of tomorrow matters more than ever. If leaders in the sector look at their strategic aims through this lens, the payoff could be far greater than simply keeping the inspectors happy - parents and future employers are giving the same signals. 🧑🧑🧒🧒👨💼 In this week's article, we look at the wording ISI have used and how its findings relate to the big picture. You'll also find some practical steps on how to shape your school's strategy going forward. 🧩 What's your response to ISI's findings? How are they going to shape your strategic and curriculum plans going forward? Tell us in the comments! 💬 #independentschools #ISI #inspections #financialeducation #moneyskills #headship #schoolstrategy #governance #IAPS #ISA #ISC #economics
