Europe’s vast network of subsea cables is the invisible backbone of global connectivity, but as geopolitical tensions rise and data traffic soars, they have become a strategic concern. A new paper from the Vodafone Institute and EPC highlights the need for Europe to act decisively and holistically to address the mounting challenges in securing its critical undersea infrastructure against both market and military threats. Recent disruption to subsea cables has exposed a limited capacity to repair and protect these critical networks. We have lift off! 🚀📡📱 Vodafone’s European Innovation Centre in Málaga, Spain, now hosts Europe’s first research hub for integrated low earth orbit space and land-based mobile broadband services. This initiative, in collaboration with Meta, AST SpaceMobile and the Universidad de Málaga, marks a major milestone for connectivity innovation. Customers will be able to switch seamlessly between satellite and 4G/5G networks with their existing smartphones.    Developing the technology that enables conventional devices to connect to satellites, will bring with it a range of wider societal benefits, from connecting rural or remote locations, to facilitating rescue and recovery efforts after natural disasters.
