A look back at Charlie and Harry Tanfield's 250-mile ride from Harrogate to Westminster to deliver hundreds of white roses pledged by supporters 🚴🚴 Along the way, the brothers visited Sheffield Hallam University's Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) to learn how people with cancer benefit from exercise and to meet the team behind the charity’s pioneering Active Together service. At Westminster, Charlie and Harry were welcomed by supporters, researchers and several Yorkshire MPs and Members of the House of Lords, who have supported the charity’s campaign to address regional inequalities. The White Rose Cancer Report calls for: 🔹 More support to help people stop smoking 🔹 Better access to cancer screening 🔹 Research-backed exercise treatment for everyone after diagnosis 🔹 Fair cancer research funding for Yorkshire “It was a real honour to carry the hopes of so many people from Yorkshire all the way to Westminster.” 🌹 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/dZpfXvb4

Christine from Wetherby became part of the Yorkshire Cancer Research team in July this year, but her connection to the charity started five years before that - after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now five-years cancer free, Christine manages the charity's shop in Halifax. She is pleased to be helping more people benefit from advancements in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Christine was told she had early-stage breast cancer after attending a routine breast screening appointment in early 2020. Following surgery and radiotherapy, she was prescribed a hormone therapy called Tamoxifen to reduce the risk of breast cancer returning. This groundbreaking drug, which helps treat and prevent breast cancer, was developed in part thanks to funding by Yorkshire Cancer Research. “When I learned that Yorkshire Cancer Research helped fund the breast cancer drug I was taking, it reaffirmed the importance of my work. It made me realise just how vital research is in turning scientific breakthroughs into real-world treatments. "Without years of lab work and clinical trials, Tamoxifen wouldn’t exist, and I wouldn’t have been taking it. Maybe my cancer would have come back, and I wouldn’t have just reached five years cancer-free.” 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDd3Akv3 #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Helping Yorkshire to become smokefree 🚭 Stop smoking advisors Tori and Sarah have been visiting businesses and communities across Yorkshire to spread the word about the benefits of stopping smoking and the support available. Recent outreach includes the Later Life event in Ilkley, organised by Radfield Home Care North Leeds & Ilkley, as well as a talk with the team at First Bus in Leeds. “It’s always a pleasure to be able to talk to people about the charity’s stop smoking service. "Attending community events gives us the chance to connect directly with people across the region, offering advice, sharing information on nicotine replacement products, and helping people take the first step towards quitting. “This kind of outreach makes stopping smoking more accessible and less isolating, as we meet people where they are.” If you’d like to arrange a talk for your business, please contact the team at [email protected]

"Some of the most rewarding days are when people realise they have the ability to successfully quit." Meet Sarah, a Stop Smoking Advisor helping people across the region to quit smoking for good 👋 "I’m originally from Manchester, where I met my husband. In 2012 we settled in Ripon, and we absolutely fell in love with the beautiful Yorkshire area. I have three children and, as a family, we enjoy exploring the county we’ve adopted as our own. "On the weekends you’ll often see me with my backpack on and walking boots laced up. I’m lucky enough to live near Fountains Abbey and Studley Deer Park. It’s magical to be there very early in the morning when it’s just you and the deer; it’s one of my favourite places to be." Sarah became a Stop Smoking Advisor in 2024, having first joined as a member of the Welcome team when the Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre in Harrogate first opened. "When someone joins the service, we will have an initial conversation to understand their habits, routines and motivations. From there, we can decide together how they would like to receive check-ins. Whether that be weekly or fortnightly, in person or over the phone, as well as what stop smoking aid would work well for them. "It’s really important to listen to people and make sure they’re heard. People don’t want to be spoken at – they’ve already been told about the health risk, the financial strain, the facts in the leaflets. That’s why it’s vital to identify a personal path to success. "Showing empathy, recognising where things may have gone wrong before and encouraging people to give it another go a different way is the best route to stopping for good. "I feel very privileged to be a part of someone’s journey to becoming smokefree, assisting their new, healthier lifestyle and reducing their chances of developing a tobacco-related cancer." The Yorkshire Cancer Research Stop Smoking Service is completely free and available to anyone living in Yorkshire. People who want to quit can self-refer by completing the online form: https://lnkd.in/gvxFZpgb
