Matt Barlow’s article below highlights a trend that needs correcting - less & less English goalscorers in the Premier League. Matt highlights some of the reasons for signing stars from abroad creating a lack of opportunity for home grown players but there are several areas that might help our coaching systems develop more clinical strikers or attacking midfield players or goalscoring defenders. The desire of coaching courses & clubs to produce players for the modern game building from the back has in many ways taken the ‘spotlight’ off goalscoring. Many syllabuses start with ‘build the attack’ then progress up the pitch through the thirds. Far better if players developed Goalscoring & creative skills in the final third first. In my last post I reminisced about the value of playing “Wembley” in the schoolyard before school, at break & lunchtime an average of 5-7 hrs a week goalscoring practice. Clubs would do well to petition for a return to ball games in school playgrounds. If we weren’t playing “Wembley” or “Wallie” - first time shots at a walk from different angles, distances and bounce or “3 and you’re in” or “Headers and volleys” - this isn’t just reminiscent, these are the games that produced the goalscorers of the past who had no coaching until they signed ‘schoolboy forms’ at 14. What else will help develop goalscorers now: •playing games with full size goals (or age appropriate goals) with goalkeepers •Have goalkeepers in more sessions - how can we develop goalscorers without goalkeepers or develop goalkeepers without goalscorers? (Goalkeepers must in average face 90% shots from goalkeepers for them to save & 10% from goalscorers with an armoury of weapons to score) • Restrict the use of mini goals, do they represent the range of goalscoring opportunities? • Create a new identity for goalscorers - Predatory/Assasins - treat them differently from the rest of the team - because they are! •Goalkeepers are the most important member of the team as they can use their hands - second most important is the Goalscorer so like the Gks they need their own coach and need to be treated differently. •In training get analysts to count the number and type of goals scored and from where - make goalscoring important and set targets - recognise the top scorers - give rewards (a Mars Bar will do) •In finishing games add stress and competition with winner stays on games - have a countdown clock and music to signal the last minute or 30 seconds •Now we’ve recognised how important Goalscorers are employ experts - ex-players with top goalscoring records - those in love with their craft who want to pass it on •create a data base & videos of the armoury of finishes all the top finishers to inspire your players https://lnkd.in/eYA_bzNt
