This week we marked 10 years of the Nissan Skills Foundation. Our initiative that’s given over 100,000 young people from the North East hands-on experience in STEM. Some of those students now work here at Nissan Sunderland, contributing to the future of manufacturing and electrification. That’s the real impact. To mark the milestone, 200 local students took on a unique challenge: building LEGO Nissan Qashqai on the factory floor. For many, it was their first glimpse inside a live manufacturing site, an experience that could spark new passions or career paths they hadn’t considered before. With the programme now expanding to 16,000 students a year, we’re proud to keep opening doors and inspiring the next generation. The UK has an opportunity—but also a challenge—to establish itself as a leader in EV manufacturing. Earlier this month I had the pleasure of joining SMMT Industry Forum: Electrified to discuss a critical issue: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞’𝘀 𝗘𝗩 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺? • The transition to EVs is accelerating, but many UK suppliers are struggling to keep pace • Demand volatility, high capital investment, and cost pressures are making it difficult for manufacturers to scale • Supply chain resilience and affordable clean energy must be prioritised if the UK is to remain competitive 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀? We have the talent, innovation, and industrial heritage to make this happen. At Unipart, we have been committed over the last 50 years to the automotive sector and we are investing for today and the future through our partnerships, skills development and building our UK capabilities. We are also transferring these skills into new sectors. A UK-first approach - one that fosters industrial strategy, cross-sector collaboration, and a robust circular economy - will be key to attracting investment and securing our place in the global EV industry. We won’t move - and drive - the pace we need to in this transition if we don’t work across the industry to create the strategic and commercial case for the UK building its leadership edge in a sector that it has done so much for to date.
