“Carlos was an engaging and passionate member of our team. Despite difficulties on the project he was always optimistic and willing to dive into any problem, facing it head on with tenacity and good spirit. He jumps into new tech with a willingness to learn and is capable of doing so "on the job" while getting things done. I would love to work with Carlos again in the future.”

Whole Genome Sequencing Demonstrates Fidaxomicin is Superior to Vancomycin for Prevention of Clostridium difficile Relapse and Reinfection
J Infect Dis. (2013)
Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was used to investigate whether fidaxomicin reduced Clostridium difficile recurrence in pivotal Phase III trials by preventing relapse of the same infection, reinfection with a new strain, or both. Paired isolates were available from 93/199 participants with recurrences (28 treated with fidaxomicin, 65 vancomycin). Given C. difficile evolutionary rates, samples ≤2 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) apart were considered relapses, samples >10 SNVs apart…

Given C. difficile evolutionary rates, samples ≤2 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) apart were considered relapses, samples >10 SNVs apart reinfection, and those with 3-10 SNVs (or without WGS) indeterminate in a competing risks survival analysis. Fidaxomicin reduced the risk of both relapse (competing risks hazard ratio(crHR)=0.40[95%CI 0.25-0.66] p=0.0003) and reinfection (crHR=0.33[0.11-1.01] p=0.05).

Predicting antimicrobial susceptibilities for Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates using whole genomic sequence data.
Antimicrobial Chemotherapy
Whole-genome sequencing potentially represents a single, rapid and cost-effective approach to defining resistance mechanisms and predicting phenotype, and strain type, for both clinical and epidemiological purposes. This retrospective study aimed to determine the efficacy of whole genome-based antimicrobial resistance prediction in clinical isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Secure Cloud Browser: Model and Architecture to Support Secure WEB Navigation
Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS), 2012 IEEE 31st Symposium on , vol., no., pp.402,403, 8-11 Oct. 2012
A Web browser is probably the main attack vector used by hackers. Solutions to browser's security are difficult to foresee, due to the influence of user-behaviour. In this paper, we show how to tackle the issue of securing web browsers introducing a Secure Cloud Browser (SCB) architecture. The rationale behind the SCB is to reduce browser vulnerability by transporting it to a remote secure environment, making it ephemeral and renovating it in a manner that is transparent to the user. Our scheme allows the user to browse a web application while source code is remotely interpreted. Further, obfuscation techniques are used to increase the lifetime of a browser session. Details and discussion over the SCB architecture are reported, while its implementation and assessment is undergoing work.
