That shift is showing up in the numbers too: claims are up, benefit usage is rising fast and expectations around access and quality are higher than ever. This week’s proposal from the Fabian Society for a new employer levy to fund a universal in-work health service, rightly highlights the pressing need to improve workforce health in the UK. I share their view on the scale of the challenge and the opportunities that decisive action could create for businesses and society. However, I question whether a levy is the right approach.   In introducing a levy, there is a risk we decouple workplace health from broader business strategy. We consistently see that meaningful change across the health of a workplace takes place when it is at the heart of a business’s corporate strategy, integrated into their company culture and championed by leadership.   As I have advocated before (https://lnkd.in/edfvrMrH), putting robust mechanisms in place will ensure organisations prioritise the health of their workplace. Greater accountability and transparency would be driven with initiatives such as the reporting on the health of your employees, helping leaders identify areas for improvement and measure the impact of any interventions.   At Vitality, our research shows that nearly 70% of UK employees want their employer to do more for their health and that every year ill employee health affects the productivity of millions of businesses. With the number of drivers over the age of 65 set to grow significantly in the UK over the coming decades, so does the need to support safe and independent mobility for older adults. Yet older drivers often face barriers to accessing affordable motor insurance, as conventional models rely heavily on age as a risk factor. As part of the Innovate UK Next Generation Programme, we have created an AI-powered system that uses telematics and dashcam data to identify patterns of risk based on actual driving behaviour and moves beyond age-based assumptions.
