🌊 Exploring the future of seaweed Our Co-Founder Pierre-Yves recently joined Levy, one of the most progressive foodservice companies, at Câr-Y-Môr, Wales’ first community-owned seaweed farm. Together they explored seaweed’s superpowers: it grows without fertiliser, freshwater or pesticides, boosts ocean biodiversity, and offers a natural alternative to petrochemicals and single-use plastics. We’re now working with Levy to see how this regenerative crop can replace plastic across foodservice operations - helping stadiums and venues across Europe cut waste for good. 💡 As Pierre puts it: “All of our businesses are at the beginning of this journey. There’s so much more that needs to happen for the UK to fully embrace the potential of seaweed. Dutch retailer will not accept new products with lowest health score The Dutch retailer Dirk van de Broek announced that they will not accept new products with the lowest health score on the Nutriscore label. Quality Meat Scotland and AHDB - Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board are one year into a baselining pilot which collects real-world data from more than 170 UK farms to measure 'carbon in' versus 'carbon out'. This is an important pilot for future government policy as it will reduce the reliance on one-sided (often international) data which only report emissions and omit carbon capture and storage. 🏃‍♀️‍➡️ To put this in context, imagine if I only measured how many calories you ate and ignored the calories you expended in physical or metabolic activities. This would give a false impression of your obesity risk. 🚜 In the same way, an imprecise estimate is being made of the climate impact of UK livestock farming by ignoring carbon sequestration in grazing land, the positive impact of livestock on soil health, flooding risk and biodiversity, the nutrient content of meat/eggs/dairy, and the cyclical nature of family farms (where crops and animals are interlinked). 🍒 I am excited to see the results of the baselining project - you can get more details here https://lnkd.in/e4y-MFGk

Can vertical farms feed the UK sustainably? A new study, led by Michael Gargaro and Dr Zoe M Harris, has found vertical farming can produce 20 times more lettuce per square metre than traditional field farms and use much less water – a potential game-changer for food security as climate change puts pressure on land and resources. However, even when powered by renewable electricity, vertically farmed lettuce still has a higher carbon footprint than field-grown crops, mainly due to high energy demands and the materials used.
