New Brake Testing Rules – What It Means for HGV Operators A big change has come into force in the transport industry: all HGVs and trailers must now undergo a loaded brake test four times a year to remain compliant. While road safety is always the priority, this new requirement is going to have a noticeable financial impact—especially for smaller operators. Let’s break it down: • Each loaded brake test typically costs between £50–£100 (plus any added downtime or logistics to get the vehicle properly loaded). • Multiply that across a fleet and across the year, and you’re potentially looking at thousands in extra operating costs annually. This comes at a time when operators are already feeling the pressure—fuel prices, insurance, driver wages, and compliance costs have all been rising steadily. For many, margins are tighter than ever, and this latest rule change only adds to the financial strain on an industry that’s already stretched thin.
