Young people caught up in county lines often do not realise the skills they already have. I am not glamorising what they have been through or what they were forced to do. What I am saying is that we can take those same skills, spin them on their head, and use them to build a positive and successful future. Think about it: Negotiation and Communication: building trust, persuading others, reading situations. Risk Management: making fast decisions, assessing danger, weighing up outcomes. Entrepreneurial Thinking: spotting opportunities, understanding supply and demand. Leadership and Influence: leading peers, motivating others, holding influence. Resilience and Problem Solving: adapting under pressure, finding solutions to challenges. Accounting: keeping track of money, managing transactions. Customer Service: dealing with people, meeting expectations, resolving conflict. These are transferable skills. They are business skills. They are life skills. The issue is not a lack of ability. The issue is that those abilities have been exploited in harmful ways. With the right mentoring, guidance, and opportunities, those same skills can be the foundation for success. Every young person deserves to know: your past does not define your future. Comic Relief Community Fund for England Opens for Applications Groundwork are administering the grants programme on behalf of Comic Relief Grants of up to £5,000 are available for grassroots, community-led organisations in England with an income of less than £250,000. To be eligible to apply, your organisation must be working in a local area to tackle the immediate impacts of poverty or build resilience to poverty and hardship. The Fund will support: Organisations that are tackling the immediate and urgent impacts of being in poverty, including providing essential resources like food, shelter, advice and healthcare. For example, foodbanks, community kitchens, homeless shelters, welfare advice agencies and health outreach projects. Organisations working to empower communities to take positive steps to lift themselves out of poverty in the longer term. For example, projects that build skills, increase access to employment, strengthen financial resilience or develop community-led solutions. The deadline for applications is 6th October 2025 (12 noon). 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗔𝗙 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! A few months ago, a donor introduced me to a trusted advisor he worked with. He thought this advisor might become a supporter of Cameras For Girls. Our initial email exchange was polite but clear; he said he was already supporting other charities and was tapped out. I could have ended the conversation there, but instead I responded: “I’m not seeking a donation. I just want to connect, because you never know who in your community might love what we do.” That’s Donor 101: don’t ask for a donation when they don’t know you from Adam. 𝗔𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 Last week, I finally had the chance to meet with that advisor. He was curious about our work, asking questions about how we help young women in Africa access cameras, skills, and pathways to paid jobs in media. Then, out of the blue, he stopped me and asked: “Wait a second — do you have a DAF?” (while looking at our donation page). When I replied “Yes — with GiveWise Foundation Canada. He looked genuinely surprised. He told me most charities see Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) as competition instead of a giving vehicle. The week before, another advisor had said the same thing. But here’s the truth: DAFs are not competition. They’re one of the easiest, most powerful giving tools available today. Easy for the donor. Easy for the charity. At the end of our call, that advisor promised to make a donation to Cameras For Girls using his DAF — simply because we gave him the option. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗔𝗙𝘀 In the US, DAFs are one of the fastest-growing vehicles for philanthropy. Canada has lagged behind, but with the first-ever DAF Day Canada coming up on October 9th, it’s time for Canadian charities to catch up. Here’s why you should be talking to your donors about DAFs: ✅ Immediate tax benefits – Donors get their tax receipt right away, even if they decide later which charity to support. ✅ Flexibility – Donors give on their timeline, not on a charity’s year-end deadline. ✅ Simplicity – One DAF can support multiple charities, reducing paperwork and admin. ✅ Bigger impact – Funds can grow tax-free until they’re granted, allowing donors to give more over time. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 DAFs are not competition. They’re a bridge between donors and the causes they love. By giving people the option, you invite them to participate in your mission in a way that works for them. So here’s my challenge to Canadian charities: If you’re not offering DAFs to your donors, don’t delay. With DAF Day around the corner, now is the time to start. Because sometimes the difference between no donation and new donation is simply whether you offered the option.
