Diraq has just published a landmark result in Nature Magazine: the demonstration that our qubits, manufactured in a foundry environment, consistently achieve over 99% fidelity in all quantum operations. This means that we’ll be able to use existing semiconductor foundries to put millions of qubits on a single chip, paving the way for compact, economical quantum computers that can be integrated into standard data centres. Our latest research reveals how simply changing the stacking orientation in bilayer semiconductor molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) can dramatically enhance optoelectronic and electrochemical device performance by up to 100x! We show that: 1. 2H stacked bilayer MoS₂ shows 2 orders of magnitude higher photoresponsivity than 3R stacking 2. Up to 2x better hydrogen evolution reaction activity. This work demonstrates that "twist engineering" - controlling how atomic layers stack - is a powerful strategy for optimizing 2D materials without changing their chemical composition. The implications span from next-generation photodetectors to more efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production. Insightful research led by Irfan H. THE STRATEGY BEHIND NanoOCM AS ITALIAN PhotonPath Raises €5.1M Series A. The ECOC Exhibition 2025 in Copenhagen closed its doors today. One of the most compelling stories came from Optica corporate member PhotonPath, an Italian scale-up I had the chance to visit during the exhibition. Founded in 2019 as a spin-off from Politecnico di Milano and nurtured in PoliHub, PhotonPath is building what many in our industry have been waiting for: scalable integrated photonics with real-world applications across telecom, datacenters, and sensing. CEO and co-founder Douglas Aguiar, explains how their journey began: “Our research focused on integrated photonics and ultra-low-noise electronics the building blocks of the photonic circuits we now commercialise.” That focus has translated into products such as the NanoOCM Spectrum Analyzer—the world’s smallest high-resolution optical spectrum analyzer with <1W power consumption—and a reconfigurable optical platform (Spectre) for precise fiber-optic sensing in harsh environments. What impressed me most is PhotonPath’s strategy during the interview: * Not just chasing speed, but solving the complex parts of the optical layer where electronics alone can’t deliver. * Bridging telecom with industrial sensing: from high-voltage grid monitoring in the Netherlands to temperature and stress sensors co-developed with an automotive braking systems manufacturer. * A fabless model aligned with the next wave of applications in datacenter interconnects (together with Telefónica) and software-defined optical networks. With €5.1M in Series A funding, PhotonPath is now scaling up manufacturing of its proprietary chipsets and plug-and-play modules—pushing Europe closer to a tipping point where integrated photonics meets mass-market demand. 🌍 From Milan to Copenhagen, PhotonPath shows how Europe’s early photonics research is finally converging with commercial opportunity. QUARTET is designed for high performance and scalability, integrating all qubit control onto standard semiconductor chips. This unique architecture allows for field upgrades through easily swappable Quantum Processor Units, ensuring the NQCC can adapt to evolving computational demands without overhauling its infrastructure.
