New research from Barclays reveals that the UK’s investment gap has grown by over 30% in just two years with 15m UK adults now holding over £610bn of ‘possible investments’ in cash. Investing can deliver better financial outcomes for individuals and supports economic growth. The growing investment gap emphasises that significant efforts are still required to transform the UK into a nation of investors. In recent months, we have seen collaborative action and positive steps from regulators and policymakers – the Advice Guidance Boundary Review and the retail investment reforms announced at Mansion House present a unique opportunity to reshape the UK’s investment culture.  The task now is to turn these reforms into lasting behavioural change, helping savers feel confident, supported and better able to understand risk. That focus on building confidence will be central to industry's work as part of the UK’s new retail investment campaign. A bank exec once told me: “We’ll take financial loss before reputational loss." That fear runs deep. Everyone’s heard about procurement being frozen over technical gaps. And most importantly, they take executive ownership. So how do you fix it before it becomes a problem? → Establish a credible brand early. In a risk-averse industry, perception is reality. A professional presence, clear narrative, and visible advisors can mean the difference between being taken seriously or being dismissed as ‘too early’. Reference customers matter here too - having credible names that vouch for you accelerates trust. → Preempt compliance concerns. Show banks you understand their world. Come prepared with answers on data handling, risk frameworks, and regulatory alignment. Don’t wait to be asked. Remember, you’re not just selling software. Looking forward to joining Chris Cummings and Andrew Griffith to speak with Giles Dilnot at the Conservative Party Conference next week about Building a British retail investing culture. Hargreaves Lansdown’s Savings and Resilience Barometer shows that since the pandemic, the number of investors has blossomed - up 3.7%. But the trend isn’t evenly spread, 63% of the top 20% of earners invest, compared to 23% of the lowest. Women are also less likely to invest - and the gap is even bigger between single households and couples. Our in-depth analysis shows that 8.7 million households are in a good position to invest, but only 58% of them do. Our mission at HL is to reach that 42%, and get them started on their investing journey.
