One of the most useful lessons I’ve learnt in performance creative? You don’t need to be right on the first try. You just need a system that gets smarter every time you test. I’ve seen again and again that strong creative isn’t born from guesswork, it’s built from structured iteration. Here’s the framework we use to turn creative into a lever for scale: Phase 1: Isolate and test We launch controlled variations, testing one element at a time (hook, format, visual cue). The goal is to learn, not scale. Phase 2: Identify performance signals We don’t stop at CTR or CPC. We dig into hold rates, thumbstop %, conversion efficiency — whatever ties directly to the real outcome: purchases. Phase 3: Scale what works Top performers are refined and rolled out more widely, often adapted across channels. Nothing scales unless it proves itself first. Phase 4: Feed the loop Insights become briefs. Patterns become templates. Winners inform the next batch turning testing into strategy, not just trial and error. The result? Better performance. Less waste. Creative that doesn’t just look good, but works hard for the brand. Most brands say they need “more” creative. What they actually need is a better process. Because the real edge isn’t in making ads… It’s in making them smarter every time.

Top tip for my freelance marketing homies out there: Stop trying to justify the costs involved in what you provide. Focus on the value/deliverables it will provide instead. I see a lot of people breaking down the fact that their prices include insurance, software, equipment, holiday pay etc. And whilst that’s all absolutely true, I’ll let you in on a little secret: That potential client doesn’t give a toss. They only care about them getting results/returns from whatever the service is that you’re selling. Try this instead: “That price is a bit steep. Especially as we didn’t get any results last time we did this.” “Interesting. How much did you pay for this last time, what did you get for it, how was it implemented, and what did you get back?” “We spent £300 on [let them specify shit deliverables from the fella from Fiverr] and got nothing back” “What’s an avg client worth to you?” “£3000”. “Ok. Well for [insert price], here’s a full breakdown of our process, all the exact deliverables you’ll get, how they’ll be used, and the metrics we’ll measure to show how they’ll affect your bottom line. I’ve also attached 3 examples of businesses similar to yours that we’ve done this for and the results they got. If we can land you [x] new clients from this in [y] time, how much profit does that leave in your pocket each month?” People think they want someone to “do a thing”. What they ACTUALLY want is confidence that there’s a clear system behind the investment that will return more than they’re putting into it. Frame your conversations this way and you’ll have a much nicer time on sales calls. P.S- there are plenty of people out there that are inherently just cheap/daft and will always place price above logic/evidence. Don’t waste your time or energy on those. How to turn old photos into brand-new stories. I used to think you needed a fancy camera crew to make great video content. Turns out, sometimes all you need is a folder full of old photos... and a little help from AI. We recently produced a 3-minute conference video for Bidfood. Tight deadline. Very little fresh footage. But we had a stack of brand images and old photos from the last 25 years. So we ran it through AI. What you see here are just a few sample clips from that video. Old photos, literally brought to life in video - living, breathing moments! Images moved. Text danced. Emotion returned. It reminded me of flipping through a photo album as a kid - when just one picture could spark a whole world of memory and meaning. This is one of the most practical uses of AI video I’ve seen. We’re getting good traffic… but we’re not seeing the leads.... A Head of Marketing in manufacturing said that to me last week. Their SEO reports looked great. Bounce rate down. Page views up. Session time solid. But leadership? Still not convinced. Still questioning the budget. Still seeing marketing as a cost centre. And this is the problem. If your reporting sounds like: “We increased engagement” “CTR is up 12%” “The blog performed well” But not: “We generated 6 qualified leads last month” “Two are in proposal stage worth £75k” “Here’s what we did to drive them” Then you’re not showing impact. You’re just describing activity. And activity doesn’t win investment. Pipeline does! Data shows marketers waste around 37% of their budget on activity that doesn’t drive revenue! That’s the bit your FD hears loud and clear 😬 So if you’re in a traditional sector and marketing still feels slightly detached from sales… It’s time to close the loop. Build your reports like a salesperson. Talk like someone who owns the number. Otherwise, you’ll always be justifying spend. Not growing it. If this hits close to home, feel free to drop me a message. Does LinkedIn still work right now? On a recent call with Lindsay, Cory, and Charlie, we spoke about the drop in reach on LinkedIn and how we’d re-optimise it for growth. We talked about how you don’t need a massive audience to win. Small creators are landing clients every day because their content is strategic. Here’s what’s worked for me even when reach has dropped: •⁠ ⁠I became a lot more intentional with my copy. •⁠ ⁠I leaned heavily into pain point triggers. •⁠ ⁠I added social proof and nuggets of value in every post. •⁠ ⁠I tested urgency, scarcity, and stronger calls to action. Even with fewer impressions, people still reach out. Because the copy is working harder. If your content isn’t performing like before, don’t just chase more views. Your brand colours might be sending the wrong message. Red doesn’t always mean power. Blue doesn’t always mean trust. Here’s what most people get wrong about colour theory. 👇 🎨 Colour isn't just visual, it's psychological. If you choose colours without understanding their meanings, you're not designing, you're guessing. Here’s what each colour really says about you: 🔴 Red → Intense. Passionate. But also aggressive and overwhelming. 🔵 Blue → Trustworthy. Calm. But can also feel cold or corporate. 🟢 Green → Growth. Freshness. But might imply inexperience if overused. 🟡 Yellow → Joyful. Energetic. But too much = anxious and hard to read. 🟠 Orange → Warmth. Creativity. Can look cheap if not used well. 🟣 Purple → Luxury. Wisdom. But can feel out of touch if misused. 🖤 Black / Greyscale → Bold. Modern. But lifeless if used with no contrast. If your colour choices clash with your brand message, people won’t trust what you're selling, even if your product is great. Pick your colours with purpose, not preference.
