𝗬𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗯 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭𝟲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀. Kudos to Carbon Brief for their excellent work on this.  Their unapologetically direct, evidence-based approach is exactly what’s needed to move the conversation forward with clear and straightforward facts. I've summarised five of the most important. To see the rest, I recommend reading the article yourself. 🔸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟭: Solar power is expensive This is outdated. The IEA has described the best solar projects as offering the “cheapest electricity in history”. The global average cost of utility-scale solar has fallen by 90% in just over a decade. 🔸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟮: Solar panels create more carbon emissions during manufacturing than they save. This is entirely false. A typical solar panel pays off its initial “carbon debt” from manufacturing in a matter of months. Over their lifetime, solar panels use 90-95% less emissions than coal, even when accounting for manufacturing. 🔸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟯: Solar farms take up valuable farmland, threatening food security The amount of land used for solar is modest. In the UK and the US, golf courses currently cover significantly more land than solar farms. Even the most ambitious net-zero plans would require only about 1% of agricultural land for solar. 🔸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟰: Solar is unreliable because it only works when the sun shines. Solar is a highly reliable and predictable power source. We know precisely when the sun rises and sets. Weather prediction is continually improving. 🔸 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟱: We’re heading for a ‘tsunami’ of solar panel waste While solar panels do generate waste, the volume is a “drop in the ocean” compared to the waste produced by fossil fuels. For every unit of electricity, coal power produces about 50 times more waste ash than solar panels do over their lifetime. One of the things I love most about working in climate and nature comms is hearing how people inside companies are pushing change forward. It’s rarely about job titles, it’s about individuals who decide that climate and nature is part of their role, whatever their role. That’s why I’m so excited about Navigating Net Zero, a new podcast from Alexia Kelly. In the first episode, Patrick Flynn (ex-Salesforce, now Switchboard) talks about embedding sustainability across a business, and his proudest achievement was showing people that everyone’s job is a climate job. It’s a powerful reminder that systemic change doesn’t come from strategy decks alone.
