Young people and the unemployed are continuing to benefit from new careers on HS2 thanks to earn-as-you-learn training opportunities. New figures show that in the last three months, 69 people started new careers with our Midlands-based construction partner, Balfour Beatty VINCI. In all, this means that 12,535 local residents are now employed on the programme. The total includes 740 people from the West Midlands who have secured an HS2 apprenticeship and a further 1,936 who have progressed into jobs following a period of unemployment. Ground remediation works have started at the site of our new #GovernmentHub 🪏🧱 Our lead contractor Kier Group began clearing the land at the Brunswick Street development in #Darlington on Monday. These works are expected to be completed in December to ensure that the main construction can begin seamlessly in early 2026. The new office space will accommodate more than 1,500 civil servants in a modern, inclusive and digitally-enabled office space and become part of the existing Darlington Economic Campus, when it opens in 2028. Andrew Ford, our Brunswick Street Programme Director, said: “This is a significant milestone for the Government Hubs Programme as we look to build on the success of the Darlington Economic Campus and support further economic growth in the region. “This new office space will also create a substantial number of new job opportunities for the area, helping to create a Civil Service workforce that is more representative of the people it serves. The HBD team has announced our appointment as the main contractor to deliver the first phase of the landmark £1bn Golden Valley Development in Cheltenham. The development, which is adjacent to GCHQ, will be delivered in partnership with HBD and Cheltenham Borough Council and represents a significant step forward in solidifying the UK’s cyber and tech innovation capabilities. Phase one of the project will begin in spring 2026 and includes the construction of two flagship buildings, IDEA - the National Cyber Innovation Centre, will provide 160,000sq ft of high-quality workspace and flexible event space, designed inspire groundbreaking ideas and innovation. Today we are recognising World Mental Health Day by reinforcing our commitment to fostering a culture of openness and support across our business. As reported by On The Tools, construction continues to be one of the most challenging sectors for mental ill health, with Tradespeople in the UK being 26 per cent more likely than workers in other industries to experience mental health illness.
