The aim of this PhD was to develop statistical methods that could be used to identify dominant spatial and temporal patterns among observations collected on river networks. Specifically, I adapted a standard statistical method, Principal Components Analysis, to take into account spatial structure of the river network (flow direction, relative influence of upstream monitoring locations on downstream locations, stream distance) so that interesting spatial features previously masked by smooth…
The aim of this PhD was to develop statistical methods that could be used to identify dominant spatial and temporal patterns among observations collected on river networks. Specifically, I adapted a standard statistical method, Principal Components Analysis, to take into account spatial structure of the river network (flow direction, relative influence of upstream monitoring locations on downstream locations, stream distance) so that interesting spatial features previously masked by smooth transitions along the river network could be uncovered. My research demonstrated how an asymmetric matrix of spatial weights could be incorporated within an existing framework, to provide additional information.
During my research I used a variety of statistical methods including (but no limited to) dynamic factor analysis, additive models (in both frequentist and Bayesian frameworks), and functional data anlaysis. -
