The National Maternity and Perinatal Audit (NMPA) has published a new State of the Nation report, looking at birth trends and outcomes in England, Scotland and Wales during 2023. The NMPA, led by RCOG, is the largest quality improvement programme for maternity and neonatal services in the world, providing a unique picture of birth trends and outcomes in Great Britain. The report reveals significant changing trends in how babies are being born. In 2023, there were fewer vaginal births (both with and without instruments) and a rise in caesarean births compared to previous years. The report also found: • Unplanned caesareans rose to 23.1% in 2023 (from 15.5% in 2018/19). • Planned caesareans rose to 16.4% (from 12.1% in 2018/19). • VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) rates declined to 14.2%, down from 24.5% in 2016/17. The RCOG does not promote one form of birth over another. Women should be supported to make an informed decision about how they want to give birth, including a discussion on the risks and benefits of both vaginal and caesarean births. The safety and care of the woman and baby during pregnancy, labour and birth should always be the main focus. Changing trends in mode of birth have important implications on maternity services. The report makes five evidence-based recommendations and calls on national governments and maternity providers to address unwarranted variation and deliver consistent, evidence-based care for women and families across the UK. The Trust is pleased to announce that Buckinghamshire has been selected to join the first wave of the National Neighbourhood Health Implementation Programme (NNHIP). This is a major national initiative designed to transform the NHS over the next decade by delivering high-quality, joined-up care closer to people’s homes. Buckinghamshire is one of only 43 successful applicants chosen from 141 submissions nationwide. The selection recognises the county’s evolving neighbourhood model and the strong commitment to collaborative working across health, care, the voluntary and community sector, and wider partners. The programme will support the development of integrated neighbourhood health services across Buckinghamshire, with a specific focus on High Wycombe, North Buckinghamshire, Beaconsfield and Marlow. The neighbourhood teams will bring together professionals from Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Primary care led by Bucks GP Provider Alliance, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, Buckinghamshire Council, voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations, pharmacy, optometry and dentistry services. The Government praised Buckinghamshire’s application for its innovation, ambition, and strong local collaboration. The programme will build on existing work and experience, supporting sites through collaborative learning, coaching, implementation and support to roll out this new vision for health care in local communities. We’ve launched a new funding call in partnership with Stand Up To Cancer and Blood Cancer UK, offering up to £2.5 million per award to support research programmes that take a data and AI-enabled approach to tackling the toughest challenges in children’s and young people’s cancers. The call is open to research proposals applicable to any type of cancer affecting children and young people, including both solid tumours and blood cancers, with Blood Cancer UK partnering with us to fund relevant successful blood cancer-focused applications. We welcome applications from international, interdisciplinary teams based across multiple institutions. Industry collaboration is encouraged. Together with Department of Health and Social Care, we have launched a major evidence review into LGBT+ health inequalities. The evidence we have shows LGBT+ people experience poorer healthcare access, experience and outcomes than the general population. Healthcare professionals, researchers and voluntary sector and other organisations are all invited to submit evidence by 31st August. The review will identify barriers to care, examine high-need service areas – and the findings will inform national, regional and local recommendations aligned with the 10-Year Health Plan.
