From Rail to Water & Energy: Don’t Leave Systems & Safety Assurance Behind I’m no expert in SESA, but having recruited in this space for years, I feel we need to address the transition. Systems and safety assurance has long been a critical discipline in the rail sector, a non-negotiable for high-risk, high-integrity infrastructure. But as rail projects slow down, we’re sitting on a goldmine of transferable capability that the water and energy sectors urgently need to tap into. Here’s why: 1. Infrastructure complexity is rising across all sectors Whether it’s treatment plants, grid-scale batteries, or transmission infrastructure, water and energy projects now involve complex, integrated systems. These projects need assurance frameworks to manage risk, reliability, and long-term performance, not just good project management. 2. Safety assurance builds confidence Beyond compliance, structured assurance provides a defensible path to safety, builds trust with regulators and stakeholders, and gives project sponsors confidence in outcomes. It’s about risk transparency and control, not red tape. 3. The human factor still matters System failures are rarely technical alone. Bringing safety and systems assurance into design and commissioning phases helps teams anticipate where human-system interaction can cause risk, and address it before it becomes an issue. What can water and energy clients do next? Recognise that systems and safety assurance isn’t just for rail, it’s for any asset where failure isn’t an option Embed assurance thinking early, from concept through to operation Take a page from rail’s playbook, hazard logs, structured safety arguments, independent reviews, adapted for your sector As infrastructure delivery shifts, so should our thinking.
