Scotland’s space sector reaches a key milestone today as Skyrora Ltd, with its headquarters in Scotland, becomes the first UK-based business to get a launch licence from the Civil Aviation Authority.      This brings the prospect of a Scottish built rocket launching from a Scottish spaceport one step closer, with preparations continuing at pace for take-off.     Scottish Enterprise has helped support Skyrora’s international growth plans over the years as part of a growing number of over 200 space companies in Scotland. The fast pace of the space sector offers huge potential for businesses to scale, innovate and enter international markets. Scotland’s ambition is to capture a £4 billion global market share by 2030 across areas from data to manufacturing, ultimately creating new high-quality jobs and economic prosperity for communities across the country.     We’re working closely with the The Scottish Government and Space Scotland, as well as Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to make sure the space ecosystem is ready for this landmark first launch. When the first vehicle lifts off from Scotland it will demonstrate the end-to-end capabilities we have for satellite design, manufacture, launch and data exploitation.     It’s an exciting prospect to have the first licenced Scottish rocket manufacturing company with the ability to launch from Scotland. It also marks a significant step in our innovation ambition to be a leading space nation.     We back ambition.

How can AI drive decarbonisation? AI can be a great multiplier of the global decarbonization efforts. From balancing renewables on the grid to predicting/optimising building energy use, optimising transport logistics, improving industrial efficiency, and supporting sustainable farming.... Solutions are many and AI has the ability to multiply emission reductions across nearly every sector. At the same time, we can’t ignore the footprint of AI itself. Globally, it already accounts for around 1.5% of electricity use. Training one large model can emit as much emisisons as 300 flights between New York and San Francisco. As pressure increases on the aviation sector to reduce its harmful emissions, debate is intensifying about the relative merits of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon or recycling it to produce e-SAF, reports Tony Harrington for GreenAir News. But a new discussion paper released by SkyNRG, a leading global supplier and emerging producer of #SAF, argues that both technologies should be used as complementary measures to decarbonise air transport rather than as competing options. The Amsterdam-based company says the high cost of developing e-SAF is driving some in the industry to consider extending the use of less-expensive fossil fuels while also investing in technologies which remove carbon from the atmosphere for permanent storage. The Climate Commission’s 2025 monitoring shows emissions are starting to come down. But transport is still heading in the wrong direction and without stronger action, it will put future budgets at risk. This graph shows there’s plenty of opportunity to turn that around. It’s not just about emissions either. Petrol is wasteful. Most of the petrol you pay for never moves your car. Imagine paying for a full tank and only getting a third back in useful movement. That’s the reality of combustion engines - wasted fuel, wasted money, and pollution in the air we all breathe. Electricity is different. It works harder for every unit we put in and when it’s renewable, the emissions savings are even greater. That’s why EVs are part of the picture, along with how we design our towns, support active transport, and move freight. These can all help cut waste, reduce air pollution, and lower emissions. #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #SharedFuture #Transport #NewZealand
