We recently sponsored the Social Market Foundation (SMF) Pensions Conference, where our panel explored how regular pension check-ups can support people with their savings journey throughout their lives. Our discussion, chaired by Jamie Gollings from SMF, brought together industry voices including Matthew McNally, Head of Strategy and Change from our Life Investment Office, alongside Joe Dabrowski from Pensions UK, Jackie Spencer from Money and Pensions Service and Gideon Salutin from the SMF. Together, they discussed how simple, personalised support at key life moments, such as starting a new job, buying a home, or planning for retirement, can make a real difference. Our research – conducted as part of our Reframing Retirement campaign – shows just 18% of women and 29% of men feel confident about their retirement finances, highlighting the urgent need for action. The Conference ended with Torsten Bell, Minister for Pensions, and SMF’s Theo Bertram laying out the challenge, including low savings rates – especially among the self-employed – and the need to achieve greater scale in the defined contribution space to enhance investment in the UK and boost returns for savers. By challenging outdated perceptions of retirement and introducing regular pension check-ups we believe we can encourage more people to feel confident about their pension choices and financial futures.
