Clinical trials play a vital role in the improvement of cancer outcomes, but significant delays in trial set-up in the UK is affecting both commercial and non-commercial trials. These delays are hindering timely patient access to potentially life-saving treatments. This valuable report co-authored by Graham Cadwallader, Ellie Jones, Zoe Martin, Catherine Elliott and Sharan Sandhu draws on insights from Cancer Research UK Science and Innovation’s clinical trial portfolio and provides recommended actions to address the delays. For people living with cancer now, there’s no time to waste.

Today we’re pleased to share our Clinical Academics Summit statement, signed by over 40 organisations 🤝 An alarming decline in clinical academic posts threatens the UK’s ability to develop new treatments and remain a global leader in health research ⚠️ Clinical academics are vital in connecting research and patient care – shaping research priorities through frontline experience and bringing new scientific discoveries straight to patients 🧑⚕️ ✨ Earlier this year, we convened leaders from universities, research funders, industry partners, the NHS and Government at a summit to commit to action to help reverse this trend. The statement of ambition and intent seeks to address the OSCHR reports’ recommendation to increase the number of permanent clinical academic posts, year-on-year. Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London)
📰 A new combination treatment for bladder cancer has been approved by NICE for use in the NHS from today, following clinical trials led by Tom Powles, Professor of Genitourinary Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London and the Director of the Barts Cancer Centre at Barts Health NHS Trust. 💬 Professor Powles says: "The approval of enfortumab vedotin with pembrolizumab is a landmark moment in the care of advanced bladder cancer – the first of its kind in 40 years. Our clinical trial results showed unprecedented improvements in survival, and thanks to the contribution of patients and their families to those studies, this treatment is now available on the NHS. It is a real privilege to see research translated into meaningful change for patients across the country." Just over 18,000 people in England are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year and only around 10% of people with stage 4 bladder cancer will survive five years or more after they are diagnosed. It is estimated that over 1,200 people per year could benefit from this targeted treatment, which is given as an infusion in a clinic or hospital. Professor Powles and his team's trial found that people given the new combination treatment lived nearly twice as long compared to those given standard chemotherapy. Results also showed that it stopped the disease from getting worse. Around 30% of people on the trial achieved a complete remission following treatment with enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab, meaning all detectable signs of the disease had disappeared.
