Open Energy was created 4 years ago, funded by UKRI and BEIS and engaged over 600 people from across industry in its design. It is 'open banking for energy' for _any_ kind of data. It is now 100% commercially funded by SSEN, NGED, Arup, Elexon and many others. Commercial members can join from £50/m. It has led, directly, to initiatives like Perseus which is taking smart meter data, with permission from SMEs into the financial sector (it is Data Act 'ready' and I believe is the first national *cross-sector* Smart Data Scheme in the country). Scotland’s space sector reaches a key milestone today as Skyrora Ltd, with its headquarters in Scotland, becomes the first UK-based business to get a launch licence from the Civil Aviation Authority.      This brings the prospect of a Scottish built rocket launching from a Scottish spaceport one step closer, with preparations continuing at pace for take-off.     Scottish Enterprise has helped support Skyrora’s international growth plans over the years as part of a growing number of over 200 space companies in Scotland. The fast pace of the space sector offers huge potential for businesses to scale, innovate and enter international markets. Scotland’s ambition is to capture a £4 billion global market share by 2030 across areas from data to manufacturing, ultimately creating new high-quality jobs and economic prosperity for communities across the country.     We’re working closely with the The Scottish Government and Space Scotland, as well as Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to make sure the space ecosystem is ready for this landmark first launch. When the first vehicle lifts off from Scotland it will demonstrate the end-to-end capabilities we have for satellite design, manufacture, launch and data exploitation.     It’s an exciting prospect to have the first licenced Scottish rocket manufacturing company with the ability to launch from Scotland. It also marks a significant step in our innovation ambition to be a leading space nation.     We back ambition.

Yesterday, the winners of the third round of the UK’s Advanced Fuel Fund (AFF) competition were announced. Seventeen SAF projects have been awarded grants to support pre-FEED, FEED, or select EPC activities. It’s interesting to observe the evolving technology mix among AFF winners over the three funding rounds: • Window 1 (2022): 4 Fischer-Tropsch (FT) projects (70% of funding), 1 ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) project (30%) • Window 2 (2023): 6 FT projects (63%), 1 ETJ (17%), 1 methanol-to-jet (MTJ) (11%), 1 pyrolysis + hydrotreatment project (8%) • Window 3 (2025): 10 FT projects (53%), 3 ETJ (29%), 4 MTJ (18%) The share of ethanol-to-jet and methanol-to-jet technologies grew noticeably in the latest round, likely indicating a shift in focus among SAF developers in the UK.
