Exploring the Future of Clean Energy in North Yorkshire 🔬 🌍 The Knapton H2 Storage consortium has secured ‘discovery’ funding from Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) to explore the potential for underground hydrogen storage near the Knapton power plant. Led by Northern Gas Networks, and partnered with Centrica Energy Storage +, British Geological Survey (BGS), Third Energy Onshore and the The University of Edinburgh, this study will assess the region’s geological suitability for large-scale hydrogen storage. This is a critical step in decarbonising gas-fired peaking plants and strengthening the UK’s energy resilience. We’ve secured new investment from the National Wealth Fund to accelerate two things we care deeply about: embedding smart battery storage across the UK and helping industry decarbonise heat. This backing means we can move faster, deliver more, and support even more organisations to cut carbon and take control of their energy costs - from factories and food producers to local authorities and hospitals. The Steering Group will help guide the industry’s work with expertise across environment, planning, and renewable energy development. We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a 400MW ready-to-build battery energy storage system in Low, Harker, Cumbria from Innova The acquisition demonstrates our commitment to help deliver the UK’s ambitious goal of having 25GW of BESS capacity by 2030, up from the 6GW today. The Harker project has a 2028 connection date and will have the capability to provide inertia and reactive power services which are required to manage the network in the region following the retirement of plants, including the Heysham nuclear power station. Global Director of Network Infrastructure Semih Oztreves said: “The Harker project marks another milestone in delivering the flexible, resilient energy infrastructure the UK needs to accelerate its transition to net zero. We’re excited to take forward the development of this strategically important site and are committed to engaging with the local community to ensure the project delivers meaningful benefits throughout its lifetime.
