Die wissenschaftliche Neuausgabe reformierter Bekenntnisschriften nimmt weitere Gestalt an: Der T... more Die wissenschaftliche Neuausgabe reformierter Bekenntnisschriften nimmt weitere Gestalt an: Der Teilband 2/1 der „Edition Reformierter Bekenntnisschriften“, an dem auch diesmal zahlreiche renommierte Wissenschaftler mitgearbeitet haben, stellt die Bekenntnisbildung innerhalb der reformierten Kirchen Europas ab 1559 dar. Auch in Band 2/1 werden die einzelnen Texte in einer sorgfaltig edierten Fassung den Leserinnen und Lesern prasentiert. Einleitungen zu den einzelnen Bekenntnisschriften erlautern ihre Entstehungssituation ebenso wie ihre Wirkungsgeschichte. Zielgruppe: Theologinnen und Theologen, Historikerinnen und Historiker mit mit besonderem Interesse an der Entwicklung der reformierten Theologie und Bekenntnisse. The Synod of Dordt has long loomed as the symbol of a conflict at the heart of much Reformation h... more The Synod of Dordt has long loomed as the symbol of a conflict at the heart of much Reformation historiography. This chapter examines the action of the Genevan delegation to the Synod stands in the line of the recent reevaluations of the history of the Synod. The sources for examining the role played by the Genevans at Dordt are in fact ample. The correspondence of Jean Diodati, still largely unutilized, contains 32 letters sent from Dordt to various correspondents that reveal a great deal about his perception of the issues at stake and the socio-political context in the Netherlands. Collaboration was nevertheless difficult inside the Genevan delegation. Diodati lamented that Tronchin failed to cooperate with him and complained on several occasions about having to take on the lions share of the task alone. This study examines the concrete modalities through which a change of faith occurred in former Ca... more This study examines the concrete modalities through which a change of faith occurred in former Catholic clergymen who moved to Geneva. While the Company of Pastors took great care with the religious instruction of these migrants, the sincerity of their conversion was tested through their capacity to fit into the social order governed by ecclesiastical discipline and to conform to it. At the centre of the relationship that joined the proselyte to the institution was the delivery of a certificate, which reflected the good quality of this relationship and was its main object. The experience of conversion should thus be reconsidered within the context of a confrontation between an individual and the institutions that define religious models and norms intended to supervise, direct and control every journey of faith.

Among the key actors of the French Protestant movement during the eventful year leading up to the... more Among the key actors of the French Protestant movement during the eventful year leading up to the First Civil War were the up to twenty deputies sent to court at any one time by the provincial synods of the churches throughout the kingdom. Working closely with the leading aristocratic protectors of the cause and the chief ministers in Paris and Geneva, these deputies, nearly all of whom were either lawyers or provincial noblemen, met together to coordinate their actions, helped to organize the Protestant delegation at the Colloquy of Poissy, directed the remarkable nationwide petition campaigns undertaken by the churches, issued directives to the provinces in order to respond to royal decrees regarding religion, and spoke collectively at court on behalf of the Protestant cause. They also transmitted to the royal authorities the grievances of the congregations of their synod and passed along requests and questions to leading ministers at court, notably to Theodore Beza during his stay in France. Despite their presence at the center of events in 1561–1562, these men have seldom been noticed and even less often studied by historians. This paper surveys their work on behalf of the Protestant cause in these years and sketches their collective portrait. An appendix provides capsule biographies of all of these obscure but important figures whom the authors have been able to identify.

A well-known passage of the Histoire ecclesiastique des Eglises reformees au royaume de France re... more A well-known passage of the Histoire ecclesiastique des Eglises reformees au royaume de France recounts how an inquiry organized by the Reformed churches at the behest of Catherine de Medici determined that 2,150 Reformed churches had come into existence by early 1562. For more than four centuries, this claim was accepted by most historians of French Protestantism, but since 1980 historians have sharply reduced their estimates of the number of churches that existed at that date. This article shows that the Reformed did indeed undertake nationwide inquiries in late 1561 and early 1562 to determine their numbers and military strength, but that these were not carried out exactly as stated in the Histoire ecclesiastique. It also seeks to indicate in what way the figure of 2,150 might contain a measure of plausibility, to illuminate the reliability and meaning of the more recent, lower estimates of the number of churches in 1561-1562, and to suggest how the very act of drawing up nationa...

Mais ces textes nous renseignent egalement, par dela la richesse de l'information ethnographique, tant sur le regard que portent les deux capucins sur leurs futurs proselytes que sur les modalites qui prevalent dans leurs ouvrages a la construction de la figure de l'Indien bresilien. L’exposition aborde la thematique en trois temps. Une premiere periode (1517-1555) retrace l’intr... more L’exposition aborde la thematique en trois temps. Une premiere periode (1517-1555) retrace l’introduction de la Reforme a Geneve. Les preches de Guillaume Farel (1489-1565) nourrissent l’effervescence religieuse qui s’exprime parfois par l’iconoclasme. La deuxieme periode (1555-1575) decrit la Reforme vecue «au quotidien». La population s’adapte aux nouvelles liturgies, cotoie les eleves de l’Academie, accueille l’afflux des refugies et subit les contraintes disciplinaires. Finalement, la troisieme periode (1575-1617) voit s’apaiser les esprits et la discipline s’assouplir. Les Genevois trouvent peu a peu un nouvel equilibre et l’annee 1617 offre l’occasion de celebrer les cent ans de la Reforme. L'exposition revisite egalement certains mythes sur la Reforme, par exemple son rapport a la danse, aux tavernes et au theâtre.

Apres avoir precise la position de Mornay lors des pourparlers entres les assemblees politiques des reformes et la Couronne, cette etude analyse comment Mornay accompagne par la plume le combat politique des huguenots et comment il interprete l'edit de Nantes. En conclusion, quelques remarques tentent de reformuler le probleme de la coexistence confessionnelle tel qu'il apparait chez Mornay.
