I'm a sociolinguist and sociophonetician with a main interest in language use and variation. I'm enrolled in a Postdoc project on sociophonetics of Italian as L2 and D2 in Pavia, and on gestural coordination in Italian articulatory data.
My research interests also include experimental phonetics, language change, and invented languages.

This research contributes to the study of phonetic attrition and the processes of construction an... more This research contributes to the study of phonetic attrition and the processes of construction and maintenance of speakers’ sociolinguistic identity in migratory settings. This preliminary work focuses on Sardinian immigrants in York (UK), by analysing the maintenance or loss of characteristic phonetic features of their Sardinian Italian, in particular stop consonants. Despite these limitations, the results of the acoustic analysis show that maintaining linguistic skills in Sardinian local varieties in migration settings is important for the resistance of Sardinian stop consonants to phonetic attrition. Furthermore, being members of Sardinian communities and speakers of Sardinian is critical for maintaining speakers’ identities, especially in multilingual and multicultural environments.

La sociolinguistica dell'immigrazione, che correla variabili acquisizionali ad aspetti sociali, postula che il tipo di rete sociale in cui l'apprendente è inserito determini la sua esposizione all'input e, dunque, gli esiti dell'acquisizione. Assumendo tale prospettiva teorica, in questo articolo si analizza la produzione dell'articolo nel parlato di 12 ucrainofone apprendenti spontanee di italiano L2.

Farewells and language usage: Multilingual practices in Bolzano merchants’ documents

Research on historical sociolinguistics has seen letter writing as a social practice which could ... more Research on historical sociolinguistics has seen letter writing as a social practice which could present many instances of multilingualism. Merchants' language management is also of particular importance for the role of traders in language contact and change. In this work, merchants' correspondence from the town of Bolzano will be analysed across the 18 th and 19 th centuries, by considering letters written by the Georg Anton Menz textile company to its correspondents. These letters have been preserved (and partly digitized) in the archive of the Chamber of Commerce in Bolzano. This analysis will focus on language distribution, as well as on multilingual practices in closing formulas. It aims to show how the relative status of the languages involved changed over time, and how an Italian closing formula (addio, farewell) was also used to close German letters. This probably correlates with a specific writing style in use in the Habsburg Empire but uncommon for Italian commercial letters.

Within the many touristic attractiveness, food and wine are representing a specific marketing sector for the companies, and also for new professional profiles like the so-called influencers. Through the analysis of websites and Instagram posts this paper highlights the importance of the customization of messages in talking about food and wine for touristic purposes. Furthermore, it confirms how the language of tourism should be considered as a peculiar and highly variable specialized language.

Learning Italian Phonetics: Dental Affricates’ Production by Irish English Speakers

This work investigates the production of Italian dental affricates /ts dz/ by Irish English learn... more This work investigates the production of Italian dental affricates /ts dz/ by Irish English learners at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Dental affricates are sounds that are difficult for non-native speakers to acquire, and they vary greatly across Italian dialects. Previous works on the topic have demonstrated that learners tend to reduce affricates to fricatives, and that the voiced /dz/ is often substituted with the voiceless in every context. This survey investigates the production of 7 speakers divided into A2 and B1 levels. Participants were asked to compile a background questionnaire and to read a list of 47 sentences containing 52 dental affricates in different phonological contexts. Phonetic annotation was manually conducted on PRAAT, and the analysis focused on durational cues and realization of voicing. The results showed that voiced affricates were rarely produced and were often substituted with their voiceless counterpart, thus leading to the general non-acquisition of voicing for this class of phoneme. Furthermore, the length of the occlusive segment was shorter than the fricative one, particularly in the post-sonorant context; a gap between the occlusive and fricative portion has also been detected. No substantial differences between the A2 and B1 levels emerged.

In forensic phonetics, speaker's recognition is considered as a conventional chore. The purpo... more In forensic phonetics, speaker's recognition is considered as a conventional chore. The purpose of this work is to analyse whether and to what extent (1) the expertise of the evaluators and (2) reading and spontaneous speaking styles influence the speakers' identification. Our analysis is founded on two different perception experiments. The first one is a real case we worked on in which we challenged both speaker with experience in the audio field and lay speakers to compare two voices in short and low-quality audio files, obtaining very weak result. From these findings, we settled a second 'laboratory' experiment with made-up files recorded by 1 Italian female speaker in 3 settings both for reading and spontaneous speech: high quality recordings, WhatsApp audio and phone call recordings. Questo lavoro propone una prima indagine sociofonetica di una varietà di italiano di recente form... more Questo lavoro propone una prima indagine sociofonetica di una varietà di italiano di recente formazione, frutto di un processo di koineizzazione che ha interessato la città di Bolzano dalla fine della prima guerra mondiale. Rispetto al panorama sociolinguistico italiano, Bolzano presenta molti elementi di peculiarità, tra cui risalta la composizione multidialettale della comunità italofona, nonché il contatto con le varietà tedescofone della provincia altoatesina. Ma come si configura l’italiano parlato a Bolzano? A questa domanda si comincia a rispondere sulla base di dati empirici, partendo da una accurata indagine della pronuncia di alcune consonanti che rivestono particolare rilevanza sociolinguistica e che vengono pronunciate, all&#39;interno di interviste e letture di parole, da un gruppo di italofoni bolzanini di età compresa tra i 18 e i 97 anni. Fattori individuali e di gruppo, legati sia alle vicende storiche che alla configurazione geografica del territorio cittadino, forniscono così i presupposti teorici base per l&#39;analisi sociofonetica della variazione dell&#39;italiano di Bolzano nel tempo, nello spazio e nella società.

La ricerca linguistica negli ultimi anni ha sempre più assunto anche in diacronia un approccio sp... more La ricerca linguistica negli ultimi anni ha sempre più assunto anche in diacronia un approccio speaker-oriented, osservando quindi i cambiamenti linguistici “dal basso” (cfr. Elspaß 2005), nelle pratiche linguistiche quotidiane. Ciò comporta un diverso approccio alla lingua, ma soprattutto una riflessione teorica e metodologica su documenti da analizzare, il loro stato e trattamento, nonché sulle possibile generalizzazioni che da essi si possono trarre. Il paradigma di ricerca che pone al centro proprio i temi appena esposti ricade sotto l’etichetta di Historical Sociolinguistics (Sociolinguistica Storica), di cui in questo contributo si vuole proporre una breve storia, delineandone lo stato dell’arte, nonché i principali problemi e prospettive di ricerca. La nascita di questa disciplina viene fatta comunemente risalire al volume di Susanne Romaine del 1982 dal titolo, appunto, Socio-Historical Linguistics: Its Status and Methodology. Proprio Romaine (1982: 1453) definisce l’obiettivo principale della nuova disciplina come: «[the main] to investigate and provide an account of the forms and uses in which variation may manifest itself in a given speech community over time, and of how particular functions, uses and kinds of variation develop within particular languages, speech communities, social groups, networks and individuals». A livello teorico e metodologico, la Sociolinguistica Storica assume fin da subito un carattere multidisciplinare, con legami con la sociolinguistica, la storia della lingua e la linguistica storica, nonché con la linguistica dei corpora e le cosiddette digital humanities. Per quanto riguarda proprio la sociolinguistica, Hernández-Campoy &amp; Conde-Silvestre (2012: 2) notano come «historical sociolinguistics has revealed that advances at the synchronic level - tracing variation and change in progress, for instance - may lead to a better understanding of diachrony - the actuation of historically attested changes - and vice versa». Se infatti nel 1972 il padre fonda¬tore della sociolinguistica, William Labov, scriveva che i dati del presente potevano essere usati per spiegare il passato, la sociolinguistica storica usa i dati del passato per illustrare i cambiamenti lin-guistici che hanno portato al presente, secondo il cosiddetto principle of uniformitarianism. Metodologicamente, il lavoro della sociolinguistica storica si realizza in quello che Marco Mancini (2007: 39) ha definito “tempo invisibile”, ossia in quelle fasi del passato linguistico non più accessibili direttamente, ma soltanto attraverso la mediazione di documenti scritti, i quali tuttavia complicano le questioni interpretative e rendono problematica l’applicazione automatica delle categorie sociolingui¬stiche. Come evidenzia lo stesso Mancini, infatti, spesso la sociolinguistica storica deve basarsi su scritti di varia natura, i quali, pertanto, possono essere incompleti o presentarsi in pessime condi¬zioni di conservazione. Un altro problema della ricerca in sociolinguistica storica riguarda la validità e rappresentatività di questi materiali come riflesso delle pratiche linguistiche orali (Hernández-Campoy &amp; Schilling- Estes 2012: 66): un possibile problema metodologico risiede nel far uso di risorse scritte per inferire gli usi lin¬guistici orali di una data comunità linguistica in un dato momento storico. La sfida della sociolinguistica storica risiede proprio nel dare validità e rappresentatività agli scritti storici analizzati, ovvero: «make the best of this bad data, ‘bad’ in the sense that it may be fragmentary, corrupted, or many times removed from the actual productions of native speakers» (Hernández-Campoy &amp; Schilling 2012: 66). Per cercare di ovviare o quanto meno limitare le problematicità insite nell’analisi di testi scritti è necessario in primo luogo creare corpora di testi omogenei per stile, che si prestino dunque all’analisi dell’evoluzione sociolinguistica, di singole variabili linguistiche. Per avvicinarsi più alla pratica quotidiana sono di gran lunga preferibili i cosiddetti ego-documents, ossia lettere, diari personali o di famiglia, o autobiografie. Mancini (2007: 33) definisce questi documenti appunto speaker-oriented, una definizione che mette chiaramente in luce la centralità dei produttori di testi come responsabili della variabilità sociale.Trattandosi di solito di testi inediti e per lo più manoscritti, è necessaria una digitalizzazione dei documenti con conseguente trascrizione, di modo da garantirne la fruizione da parte della comunità scientifica. In questo senso rientrano dunque le metodologie e gli avanzamenti compiuti in questi anni nelle digital humanities e nella linguistica dei corpora (cfr. Warwick, Terras &amp; Nyhan 2011). Italian dental affricates are usually distinguished between voiceless /ts/ and voiced /dz/. However, in the data collected from 48 speakers it emerges a new sonority degree, a &quot;mixed&quot; affricates produced with a voiced closure and a voiceless fricative release. The three different affricates also show a sociophonetic distribution with respect to speakers&#39; age, sex, working class and district of residence.

This paper presents a sociophonetic analysis of dental affricates articulation in the variety of ... more This paper presents a sociophonetic analysis of dental affricates articulation in the variety of Italian spoken in Bozen. Following Harrington (2013), four spectral moments were extracted in the middle point of the fricative part of the affricate. However, only centre of gravity has demonstrated sensible to sociophonetic variation. The analysis of a corpus of more than 4200 tokens shows that young speakers tend to a more advanced pronounciation than their parents and grandparents. A variotion between sexes has also been detected.

The paper analyses the use of personal pronouns (PPs) in three Aristophanes&amp;amp;#x27;s co... more The paper analyses the use of personal pronouns (PPs) in three Aristophanes&amp;amp;#x27;s comedies (Lysistrata, Thesmophoriazusae, and Ecclesiazusae). The analysis shows that male characters use more 1st person singular pronouns and a more report speaking communicative style (see Tannen 1994), whereas female characters use more 1st person plural pronouns with an inclusive value, 2nd person singular pronouns and a more rapport speaking communicative style (Tannen 1994). This finding confirm the claim of a gender-distribution of PPs in speech, already shown for other modern languages (e.g. English, in Hirschmann 1994).

The study explores two situations of language contact between Standard Italian, Italo-Romance dia... more The study explores two situations of language contact between Standard Italian, Italo-Romance dialects and Italian regional varieties in two sociolinguistic settings: a university college in Pavia and a group of second or third generation of Italian immigrants in Bolzano. All speakers were aged between 19 and 35 years. The study offers an acoustic analysis of the realization of dental affricates in word-list reading. The emergence of a new degree of sonority, the so-called intermediate, is highlighted in both group. The interpretation of this phenomenon relies on the Accomodation Theory.
