In contrast to countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom, where the correlation b... more In contrast to countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom, where the correlation between phonological variables and social class is substantiated by Labov’s (1972) and Trudgill’s (1974) research findings, there is no singular prestigious standard in Arabic-speaking countries. This article addresses the issue of prestige in Arabic languages and, drawing on numerous empirical studies of Arabic dialects conducted by Arabic dialectologists/sociolinguists, asserts that the Labovian variationist model is not applicable to these multilingual and polyglossic contexts. Rather, the dynamics at play are influenced more by cultural, community, and religious factors. To illustrate this, we scrutinize two prominent phonological features: the Standard Arabic variables of the voiceless uvular occlusive q and the interdentals, along with their variants, in some Arabic or Arabic-speaking countries.

Tandis que l’implicature conventionnelle dénote une inférence logique, l’implicature conversationnelle se réfère à ‘tout’ sens implicite (ou insinué) par l’auteur d’un énoncé. Les implicatures conversationnelles sont caractérisées par la non-conventionalité, la sensibilité au contexte, la calculabilité, l’indétermination et l’annulabilité. C’est cette dernière caractéristique (et sa relation avec la métaphore) qui est discutée dans cet article.

This paper discusses the feasibility of its implementation as an educational, pedagogic, and academic requirement in language education. The claim made here is that corpus linguistics is not merely a globalisation trend, but it may prove an indispensable tool encompassing countless applications for learners, teachers, and resarchers alike even in less technology-based educational contexts.

In some EFL contexts in Algeria, language learning/teaching formerly witnessed a shift from a pur... more In some EFL contexts in Algeria, language learning/teaching formerly witnessed a shift from a purely formal and structural approach to an exclusively communicative method that praised fluency at the expense of accuracy, where grammar, let alone formal deductive grammar, was too often considered as a dull subject, the teaching of which was relegated to a secondary position or altogether abandoned. This paper advocates why deductive grammar instruction should be implemented in EFL curricula and how it may be successfully applied without impeding the communicative potential of learners. Furthermore, it explores ways in which awareness can be raised about the link between fields and subfields of linguistics and language, or grammar, learning.

Due to the dialectal contact resulting from a massive migration from different parts of the count... more Due to the dialectal contact resulting from a massive migration from different parts of the country, the Arabic variety of Sidi Bel-Abbes, a city in northwestern Algeria, is undergoing change. Countless studies have been suggested to account for dialectal change in Arab and/or Arabic speaking countries; however, most of them have either relied solely on phonological changes such as interdentals to dentals and the status of q, g, and the glottal stop ?, or suggested a single model to account for dialectal change. In addition to phonological changes, this work examines other linguistic level features, for example, lexical and morphosyntactic markers. Furthermore, it proposes a complex analysis whereby a combination of factors pertaining to the speakers' social relations, attitudes, representations, and identity are considered.

It purports to explain the relevance of interdisciplinarity research in ethno-sociolinguistics from an epistemological, theoretical and methodological point of view, as suggested by Blanchet (2000, 2007).
