The Municipality of Larnaka has commenced implementation of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), marking a significant step towards a more accessible, safe and sustainable transport system for the city and its surrounding municipalities.
The SUMP seeks to increase the use of public transport, improve multimodality, and enhance road safety through the redesign of key corridors and the introduction of new infrastructure. Over a period of 16 months, until January 2027, the plan foresees extensive works funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and national resources.
A total of 22 kilometres of new cycling infrastructure will be developed along Akropoleos, Spyrou Kyprianou, Yiannou Kranidiotou, Nikos and Despoina Pattichi, Artemidos, Faneromenis and Lemesos avenues. In parallel, bus lanes will be redesigned and constructed along Eleftherias Street, and on Nikos and Despoina Pattichi, Artemidos and Makarios avenues, prioritising sustainable modes of transport and reducing space allocated to private vehicles.
Further measures include the conversion of selected streets to one-way operation, the remodelling of major junctions to enhance safety, and the expansion of green spaces and accessible pavements. The project will also create 13 kilometres of new pavements, 182 pedestrian and cycling crossings, and 174 accessibility ramps.
Improvements to horizontal and vertical signage will be complemented by the installation of new traffic lights and the upgrade of existing systems. In addition, supporting works on drainage, rainwater collection, water supply and irrigation will ensure the durability of the new infrastructure and minimise disruption to local businesses during implementation.
