In this study of cross-border alliances, we argue that learning from past experiences is an effic... more In this study of cross-border alliances, we argue that learning from past experiences is an efficient way to alleviate coordination challenges and, therefore, is a key factor that enhances the alliance performance of the firm. We also argue that learning from past experiences is an important factor creating superior performance for the firm through facilitating interfirm know-how transfer. At least two cultural aspects influence learning from experience: organizational commitment to the alliance relationship and learning orientation. We also explore the performance implications of learning from experience.

In most capstone design courses, students go through the complete design process starting with a ... more In most capstone design courses, students go through the complete design process starting with a description of the problem and ending with a prototype. Many schools have one or two-semester-long classes where students work in groups or individually. The capstone design course in the Division of Engineering Technology at Wayne State University (WSU) falls into this category. The National Science Foundation funded Greenfield Coalition's (GC) capstone design course, however, is unique since students are given credit for their projects based on real-work experiences. This paper discusses how this is done at the Greenfield Coalition and the implications of adapting this course to Wayne State University's Division of Engineering Technology (ET) curricula.

The Greenfield Coalition is a National Science Foundation funded coalition which sets a new parad... more The Greenfield Coalition is a National Science Foundation funded coalition which sets a new paradigm in manufacturing engineering education. One of the key goals of the coalition is the development of a unique, experiential, learner-centered curricula which is designed and delivered through the collaboration of university and industry partners. Engineering technologist candidates are full time employees of the Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) Center where their real world experience plays an important role in their educational program. In this paper, we discuss our experience in the development of a portfolio of validation methods in the Design Project Knowledge area, a senior capstone design course in engineering technology at Wayne State University (WSU) by validating these candidates' manufacturing experiences at the CAT Center.

Product Modularization Considering Cost and Manufacturability of Modules

It is argued that modular architecture allows us to create large product variety at lower cost, a... more It is argued that modular architecture allows us to create large product variety at lower cost, and in a shorter development cycle time. While it has been widely recognized that modular design improves assemblability, the manufacturability of modules themselves have rarely been considered during modularization. This paper presents a formal and integrated framework for product modularization by optimizing manufacturability of modules and costs of modularization during the earlier stages of product development. A fuzzy logic approach is used to handle the vague and imprecise product information available during the concept development phase of product development. The framework also facilitates sensitivity analysis to provide design engineers and managers with deeper insights on tradeoffs among conflicting design objectives. The methodology is validated through a case study on the modularization of an automotive climate control system. This paper emphasizes manufacturability and the cost of modularizations while determining optimal modules; it is a newer approach to modularization that is validated through a case study from the automotive industry.

This study argues that inventive (R&D) efficiency may be an important factor in the competition f... more This study argues that inventive (R&D) efficiency may be an important factor in the competition for global market shares and goods and services. The authors compare R&D efficiency for 14 industrial groups in the United States and Japan using multiple indices of inventive efficiency. Findings show interesting differences in inventive efficiency across industrial groups and between the United States and Japan. United States food, textile, chemical, rubber, metals, fabricated metals, and other miscellaneous manufacturing industries appear t o be relatively more efficient in inventive efficiency than their Japanese counterparts. In contrast, Japanese paper, petroleum, machinery, and scientific equipment industries display greater inventive efficiency than their United States counterparts. The electrical equipment, transportation, and stone industries in the two countries appear to be equally efficient. The implications of these differences are discussed.

Self-Construal and Willingness to Purchase Foreign Products: The Mediating Roles of Consumer Cosmopolitanism and Ethnocentrism

In this chapter, we argue that independent self-construal influences the willingness to purchase ... more In this chapter, we argue that independent self-construal influences the willingness to purchase foreign products through the degree of consumer cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism. To test these arguments, survey data (N = 444, TR = 234, US = 210) was collected from Turkey and the United States. Results of a parallel multiple mediator model show that independent self-construal has a positive effect on the willingness to purchase foreign products, and furthermore, consumer cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism mediate this relationship. In addition, consumer cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism are positively and negatively affected by independent self-construal. Moreover, we show that consumer cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism affect willingness to purchase foreign products, differently.

From the modest levels of the 1950s, the volume of world trade has exploded to over $2 trillion, and the sales of foreign affiliates of US firms have reached $500 billion by 1983 (Terpstra 1983). Yet, even in the light of accelerated efforts to further stimulate US exporters (e.g., the Export Trading Company Act of 1982), a recent Dunn and Bradstreet survey showed that less than 1% of the US firms had engaged in exporting in 1982 (Trade Marks, 1983). Similarly, the International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce has lamented that only 5% of all US manufacturers will have engaged in export marketing in 1984.

This paper illustrates how conjoint methodology can be used by recipient countries to segment the... more This paper illustrates how conjoint methodology can be used by recipient countries to segment the donor market for foreign direct investment (FDI), thereby enhancing the effectiveness of their FDI attraction efforts. The study results indicate that FDI donors can be clustered into segments based on the FDI benefits they seek. The article concludes with normative and practical implications of the methodology for investment policy makers in recipient countries.

Fairness perceptions of retail price increases by foreign and domestic brands: The roles of ethnocentric beliefs, profit stickiness, and contextual information

Although consumers do not usually take kindly to price increases, their perceptions of fairness o... more Although consumers do not usually take kindly to price increases, their perceptions of fairness of price increases are contingent on relevant factors. This study investigates consumers' perceptions of the fairness of retail price increase by a domestic versus a foreign brand, as moderated by consumers' ethnocentricity, bias toward inferring a profit motive from a price increase (i.e., "profit stickiness"), and relevant contextual information. Over the course of two sets of experiments, the authors find that ethnocentricity does not necessarily lead to the intuitively expected favorable (unfavorable) bias toward (against) a domestic (foreign) brand's decision to raise prices, subject to profit stickiness and contextual information. These findings have implications for theory, practice, and further research.

These outcomes are especially relevant in rapidly growing, dynamic markets, such as China, where Western market entrants face barriers erected by their Chinese counterparts, the Chinese government, and the social and cultural context in which they need to operate. Thus, Niu, Dong, and Chen&#39;s (2011) study on market entry barriers in China serves as a refreshing window on this important phenomenon by addressing the nature and degree of entry barriers that firms need to overcome when entering China. Many questions on this problem remain, however, especially in other emerging market contexts. This commentary essay speaks to the merits of Niu et al. (2011) and offers promising questions for future research.
