SKOL: World’s troubles are shared by all people
Torrential rains that caused widespread flooding here recently are reminders of what scientists are telling us about the effects of global climate change — that we will see more dramatic weather events such as our downpours in recent years, the recent 113-degree temperature in Los Angeles and the terrible heat wave that plagued Russia.

John Gobel, 3, is fascinated by Patches and Pumper, the hit of the Onalaska Fire Department’s open house Saturday. The department hopes to purchase the robotic mascot to add to its education efforts in the community and schools. If the department succeeds at raising the $10,000 needed to buy the mascot through private fundraising, area elementary students will compete in a naming contest for him. "This is a community investment," said Assistant Fire Chief Troy Gudie. "I’ve seen the reactions with the children and how he connects with them on their eye-level to what they are being taught."
