2020-08-27: Summer Internship Report — Los Alamos National Laboratory

Image
Considering the epidemic of COVID-19, when everything was uncertain, in early May 2020, I was accepted to Applied Machine Learning (AML) Summer Research Fellowship Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) . I can not be grateful enough to have this excellent opportunity when the world was suffering due to the epidemic caused by Novel Coronavirus. I was offered to work remotely due to the rise of coronavirus cases across the United States. Thus, I started working from home as a Research Intern at LANL on June 1, 2020, under the supervision of Dr. Diane Oyen and Dr. Kari Sentz . The research problem I mainly focused on  Offline Handwritten Mathematical Expression Recognition — a subcomponent project called Scientific Image Analysis . Remotely Working as a Research Intern Los Alamos National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC). 2017-01-20: CNN.com has been unarchivable since November 1st, 2016

CNN.com has been unarchivable since 2016-11-01T15:01:31 , at least by the common web archiving systems employed by the Internet Archive , archive.is , and webcitation.org . The last known correctly archived page in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine is 2016-11-01T13:15:40 , with all versions since then producing some kind of error (including today's;   2017-01-20T09:16:50 ). This means that the most popular web archives have no record of the time immediately before the presidential election through at least today's presidential inauguration. Given the political controversy surrounding the election, one might conclude this is a part of some grand conspiracy equivalent to those found in the TV series The X-Files . But rest assured, this is not the case; the page was archived as is, and the reasons behind the archival failure are not as fantastical as those found in the show.  As we will explain below, other archival systems have successfully archived CNN.com ...

Web Archives perform the crucial service of preserving our collective digital heritage. October 26, 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Internet Archive , and the United States presidential Election will take place November 8, 2016 .  To commemorate both occasions, let us look at the 2008 and 2012 US General Elections as told by Web Archives from the perspectives of CNN and Fox News. We started with three news media - MSNBC, CNN and Fox News in order to capture both ends of the political spectrum.  However, msnbc.com has redirected to various different URLs in the past  (e.g., msnbc.msn.com, nbcnews.com) and the result is that the site is not  well-archived. Obama vs McCain - Fox News (2008) Obama vs McCain - CNN (2008) Obama vs Romney - Fox News (2012) The archives show that the current concerns about voter fraud and election irregularities are not new (at least on Fox News, we did not find corresponding stories at CNN). This Fox News p...
