2024-08-06: Disinformation Detection and Analytics REU Program 2024 - Final Presentations

Students presenting at ODU CS REU Program 2024 - Final Presentations This year marks the third year of the  National Science Foundation  (NSF) funded program of  Research Experiences for Undergraduates  (REU) on Disinformation Detection and Analysis at Old Dominion University. Each year, eight undergraduate students are selected nationwide and conduct research projects with their mentors. The students presented their projects on July 23, 2024, concluding this year's REU program. The program was hosted by the Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) Research Group within the Department of Computer Science in collaboration with VMASC . More than 20 people, including mentors, REU students, graduate students, and other faculty, participated in the final presentation either online or in person. Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program Mis and disinformation can cause real damage in societies by confusing people and rallying individuals, groups, and communities toward harmful actions.  Disinformation  is false or misleading information spread with the intention to deceive or cause harm. It can appear in the form of fabricated or deliberately manipulated audio/visual content, intentionally created conspiracy theories, or rumors spread to harm or cause distrust.   Misinformation , on the other hand, is information that is shared without the intent to manipulate people. This includes sharing rumors or false information before verifying their accuracy, unintentional mistakes such as inaccurate photo captions, dates, statistics, and translations, or situations where satire is mistakenly taken as ...

2023-03-29: A Summary of Misinformation & Disinformation Workshop at Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University library organized a workshop on Misinformation and Disinformation  (see video and presentation slides added in this blog) on Feb 23, 2023. It was two hours workshop session led by six professors, including Dr. Jian Wu , Dr. Sampath Jayarathna , Dr. Michele Weigle , Dr. Faryaneh Poursardar , Dr. Vikas Ashok , and Dr. Yi He from the department of Computer Science (CS). The workshop had more than 50 participants, including online and in-person. Each professor presented their research on Misinformation and Disinformation during this workshop.
