This narrative inquiry investigates the identity negotiation of six Asian migrant women in Aotearoa New Zealand, exploring the gap between their perceived self-value and imposed value as language learners. Through iterative interviews, it reveals how these women utilize strategies of diversity and hybridity to navigate their experiences and enhance their sense of belonging and self-worth. The findings underscore the importance of supportive relationships in educational settings, proposing the concept of "safe bridging places" to foster EAL learners' identities.

Asian migrants 1 that settle in countries like NZ learn English in the hope of accessing mainstream society. However, this process presents many challenges to their identities and their sense of self worth. This paper explores one migrant's journey. The case study of "Jessica" used a narrative approach to investigate her identity construction in trying to get entry to a degree programme. The study focuses on significant events collected from eight in-depth interviews over a period of eleven months. In the process of being originally denied entry to university, then later accepted, Jessica negotiated the negative and limited identity imposed on her, reconstructing her identity as a university student and successful language learner with increased self-value. The findings indicate the significance of imposed identities on self-value, the importance of identity negotiation and the close link to a sense of belonging in mainstream society. Journeys such as Jessica's hopefully make policy makers and language education providers aware of the importance of the sense of self when supporting migrants who are language learners.

This paper contends that although multicultural diversity is a much celebrated and encouraged phenomenon, it is rife with misunderstanding, miscommunication and misrepresentation, which emanate from the lacking of understanding and cultural orientation between groups. In order to address this problem of misunderstanding, miscommunication and consequent stereotypical misrepresentation an anthropological and interactional sociolinguistic approach is proposed.
In seeking to better understand English language learners and their imagined identities, which is the central focus of our article, scholars have drawn extensively on the work of Norton and colleagues. This work has foregrounded the language learner as a participating social agent with complex and changing identities. It is this agentive sense of self that is linked, in narratives, to larger socio-cultural and historical social practices. Our interest here lies particularly in the effects of migration on language learners. With this in mind, we advocate that classroom communities be fostered wherein a range of narrative identities, as sense-making practices, are respectfully harnessed as resources for learners of diverse linguistic histories, to create more socially just and responsive “possible worlds”
This research report presents the results of a qualitative study carried out at the Universidad de Guanajuato in central Mexico. Its purpose was to examine the process of identity formation of return migrants who lived a number of years in the United States and are currently studying for a BA in TESOL in Mexico. The participants use their knowledge of the English language to be able to reinsert themselves in society once they have returned to live in the country. Through narrative inquiry using autobiographies and semi-structured interviews, the study focuses on how language might influence the way in which individuals perceive themselves. Implications on family, ethnic associations, and school experiences were found.

Much research on identity (re)construction in periphery countries (e.g., Pakistan, Thailand) continues to shed light on how English learners negotiate and construct their identities. This narrative case study explores how two Indonesian learners of English who have been learning English for many years reflect on their journey of identity construction as English learners in their local contexts. Nested in a narrative inquiry methodology, this study examined the participants " personal stories that were unique, rich and nuanced with the interplay of social, cultural and political dimensions (re)shaping their experiences. The initial phases of identity construction revealed from the participants " early years indicated that the emergence of identity as English learners was largely marked by a false or negative association of the English language in relation to various aspects of being a school subject leading to a false sense of positive identity. Pedagogical implications of the study are also presented in this article.
Transnational Identities, Pedagogies, and Practices in English Language Teaching: Critical Inquiries from Diverse Practitioners, 2020
In Japan, I was a gaijin (外人), an outside or foreign person. Even by birth, I was still a foreigner. In India, I have come from overseas, from foreign. Even as an Indian citizen, I am still a foreigner. In Hawai’i, I am not kama’aina or a local person, but from the outside as I do not speak pidgin fluently. In San Diego, gender has been added to my foreignness where I am now labelled as a “woman of color,” but not sharing in the same political, cultural, and social histories as my peers who have roots in the United States going back several generations. I continue to remain a resident alien, unable to give up my Indian citizenship, the only artifact that connects me to the land of my ancestors, yet feeling most at home here in the United States with my father, husband, and children. In this chapter, I trace my history and critical incidents, or what Daloz Parks (1999, 2000) terms “shipwreck-moments,” where I confront and reflect on my understanding of my transnational identity (ethno) as a transnational language teacher and ESOL educator through a systematic analysis (graphy) of my personal experiences (auto) (Ellis, Adams, & Bochner, 2011).
