Archaeology of Central Asia

The aim of the research work. Introducing the science of a new irrigation oasis  of  Late  Bronze  Age  and  Early  Iron  Age  in  Northern  Bactria,  and  the archaeological  monuments  (Burguttepe,  Kayrittepe)  situated  in  this  area,  their classification,  the  typology  of  material  finds,  as  well  as  discussing  the  relevant issues of monuments situated in this irrigation oasis, the formation of the typology of sample material culture, and illuminating the emergence of early Zoroastrianism in ancient Bactria based on various material sources. The objects of the research are the archaeological monument of Kuchuk I, and  the  material  culture  and  religious  outlook  of  the  new  irrigated  region  in Zarabag. 
The scientific novelty of the research work is as follows:
10  village-type  monuments,  220  dakhma-kurgans,  175  petroglyphs  have been identified in the region of Pashkhurt-Zarabag, which belong to Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age and have been incorporated to the Zarabag new irrigated region.
A local feature has been identified in the architecture of the Kuchuk I period in Northern Bactria - the village settlements are surrounded by stone walls shown by the excavations at the Burguttepe and Kayrittepe.
The existence of the early zoroastrian elements have been substantiated in the  funeral  rites  of  the  inhabitants  of  the  Kuchuk  I  period  based  on  the constructions of Avestan «kata» identified in the Zarabag new irrigated region.
According  to  the  comprehensive  study  of  Avesta  texts  and  archeological sources, the concept of «vara» is not associated with the construction, but with a new oasis-country.

В статье вводится в оборот коллекция пяти стеклянных изделий, найденных в ходе археологических исследований в историческом центре г. Екатеринбурга. Представлена их общая характеристика, проведена атрибуция и интерпретация рельефных надписей и изображений и дана датировка. На основе письменных источников был атрибутирован фрагмент бутылки Трехгорного пивоваренного завода и датирована ранним советским временем. В ходе работ было найдено клеймо с надписью «SM&C». Версия, что данное клеймо принадлежит фирме Смирновых производителю смирновской водки, не нашло подтверждения. Дана датировка флакона «товарищества Брокар и Ко» на основе изображения на нем государственного герба. Высказана версия, что флакон с надписью «АПТЕКА» и уксусная бутылка произведены на Божедомском стекольном заводе и даны их датировки. Установлено, что практически все представленные изделия изготовлены выдуванием в форму

This article presents a report on the study of runic relics
discovered on Arvis Mountain in the village of Urandösh,
the Üzüür of Otog Banner, Ordos, Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China. Three
pieces of runic inscriptions were found in the Kharankhui
Valley of Arvis Mountain. The first inscription, the most
clearly visible, was reported in 2012, but only recently
attracted the attention of researchers. The first inscription
is a travel record, while the second and third inscriptions
are dedicated to the author’s father. Despite their content,
these inscriptions are categorized as carved runic
inscriptions in terms of writing method.

The article presents the types of kitchenware from the Karakhanid period in Ahsikеt and the techniques used for their production. These items are divided into three main groups: pottery vessels made on a potter's wheel, hand-made painted ceramics, and stone cauldrons. Each of these groups possesses unique practical and aesthetic characteristics. The article analyzes the shapes of the kitchenware, the technologies of their production, and their functional features. It also highlights the significance of these items for understanding the cultural heritage of the Karakhanid period.

В статье освещаются архитектурные особенности этой оборонительной стены, выявленные в результате археологических раскопок, проведенных на объекте XVIII и XIX. Кроме того, представлена информация об археологических находках, в том числе керамических изделиях, которые помогают определить степень сохранности стены и ее периодическую принадлежность. Также анализируется влияние строительства стен на развитие города, их роль в обеспечении безопасности населения и связь с процессами урбанизации того времени.

Section on the so called Bukhar Khuda coins -- silver drachms reproducing a type of Marv drachms of Varahran V and supplied with Sogdian legends. They were initially minted in Bukhara (from 630s CE), but after campaigns o Kutayba b. Muslim were also struck in Samarqand and Ishtihan.

Ancient Gandhāra remained a vibrant center of culture, religion, education, trade and commerce. The people of Gandhāra were passionate about art, music, and dance, which is reflected in the intricate carvings and sculptures from that period. These artworks often depict scenes of merry-making and dancing, showcasing the region's lively cultural atmosphere. Particularly notable is the depiction of the musical instruments in Gandhāra art, which highlights the refined aesthetic sense of the people. The skillful portrayal of these instruments further emphasizes the region's deep appreciation for music and arts of their time. In this article which is a part of M.Phil. dissertation titled, 'Continuation of Cultural Traditions in Peshawar valley as revealed in Gandhāra art', I will highlight the well-known representations of the musical instruments in this art.

В верхних культур ных горизонтах разрушений, проис шедших, вероятно, при строительстве средневековой крепости, расположен ной недалеко от родника, и при рытье фундаментов для построек некогда су ществовавшего здесь кишлака, выяв лено больше. Собранные в Зирабулаке каменные изделия напоминают инвентарь Кутурбулакской мустьерской стоянки. Выбор сырья для производства орудий заметно влиял на технику, ти пологию и весь комплекс каменной ин дустрии Зирабулака. Основным сырь ем для изготовления каменных изде лий у древних обитателей Зирабулакской стоянки являлась крупная галь ка -пластинчатая, хорошо поддаю щаяся обработке порода, представлен ная в изобилии в пойме Зарафшана и обнажении его террас. Реже исполь зовалась крупнозернистая разновид ность породы, дающая шероховатую поверхность скола, а также кремень различных оттенков, который добыва ли в обнажениях коренных выходов по склонам Зирабулакских гор. В ка честве сырья использовались также не очень прочные осадочные породы, легко поддающиеся обработке: крем нистый известняк, глинистые сланцы и т. д. Первичная обработка камня на Зирабулакской стоянке, как и на других мустьерских памятниках, характеризуется наличием ядриц и про дуктами его расщепления, т. е. заготовками для орудий (отщепов, пластинчатых отщепов и пластин). А 2 -дисковидные нуклеусы: J -нуклеус треугольной формы; f -галечное изделиечоппинг-туд; 5 -ретушированная пластина; б-скребло; 7 -остроконечник; б. 9 -скребла.

Climate change is caused by global warming, and its consequences have become one of the most important concerns and public policies in many countries. The Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the UN's International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in November 2007 said that global warming cannot be stopped and that, at best, average temperatures in 2090-2099 will be 1.1 to 6.4 degrees above 1980-1999. If the global average temperature increases by more than 1.5 to 2.5 °C, about 20-30 % of animal and plant species could disappear. The perspective of national security actors on climate change is important. Climate changes change the military's strategic and operational environment and provide them with new options and challenges. Moving beyond the global warming cause-and-effect argument, this article argues that it is important for the military to begin planning to address the potentially devastating effects of global warming in the military domain. The consequences of climate change can affect the organization, training, equipping, and planning of the military services. Today, scientists and military leaders must determine the potential impacts of climate change on the ability to perform missions in support of national security objectives. Most countries already recognize the risk of climate change in their military installations and warn that more resources and monitoring systems are needed to increase preparedness. In this article, the causes of global warming and climate change are discussed first, and then the consequences of global warming are discussed with an emphasis on the military aspect. This study aims to examine the various consequences of global warming. As mentioned in the introduction section, the rate of global warming can be slowed down but this warming process will continue. Since some of the consequences of global warming are caused by previous consequences, the consequences of global warming can be placed in the main sections and sub-sections; since some of the consequences of warming can be reduced by taking control measures; Therefore, we defined the consequences of warming in the form of two scenarios. The first scenario was considered for the case where no control measures were taken. The second scenario was for the case where control measures are taken to prevent secondary consequences. In the first scenario, in the first stage, the primary consequences of global warming were determined using numerous reliable internal and external libraries internet sources, and articles. In the second stage of this scenario, by holding a meeting with 5 experts in this matter, other different consequences of global warming were identified and categorized in general along with the consequences extracted from the first stage; In the second scenario, by holding an expert meeting (five experts in this matter), control measures to prevent the consequences of warming and the consequences of global warming after the control measures were determined. Global warming, directly and indirectly, causes an increase in the temperature of the air near the surface of the earth and the ocean, the melting of polar ice (increasing the tension between the countries of the Arctic region), and the rise of the sea level, the increase in the intensity of storm waves, the submergence of some areas that have a low height compared to the free sea level, drought in some areas, especially areas located in the arid and semi-arid belt of the earth, intensification of torrential rains in some areas, increase in the intensity of tropical storms in storm-prone areas, water and food crisis, poverty and hunger, migration, destruction of equipment and military bases, especially those located near coastal areas, reduction of the efficiency of military personnel. There will be an increase in fine dust and pollution, common rivers and war over it both at the domestic and regional levels, increasing the role of the military and security forces, marginalization around the cities due to internal migration, and an increase in the risk of terrorism at the international level. We defined the consequences of warming in the form of two scenarios. The first scenario was considered for the case where no control measures were taken. The second scenario is for the case where control measures are taken to prevent secondary consequences. In the first stage of this research, the primary consequences of global warming were determined using numerous reliable internal and external libraries internet sources, and articles. In the second stage of the research, by holding a meeting with 10 experts in this matter, other different consequences of global warming and control measures were identified and categorized in general along with the consequences extracted from the first stage; rising sea levels, increasing intensity of tropical storms in storm-prone areas, increasing intensity of storm waves, submergence of coastal areas, destruction of equipment and military bases near the coast, drought, migration and use of common rivers and war over it on dimensions both domestically and regionally are among the most important consequences of global warming in the form of the first scenario. In the second scenario, where it was assumed that control measures are taken to prevent the consequences of global warming, only the natural consequences of global warming appeared and it can be said that security is guaranteed to a good extent and practically the consequences that involve the military dimension are reaches its lowest value.

ИЗ ХРАМА ОКСА И З нескольких десятков предметов ахеменидского времени, найденных в храме Окса на Тахти Сангине среди 5000 единиц храмового инвентаря, достаточно большой интерес представляет высококачественная рукоять из слоновой кости, открытая между коридорами N2 3 и .N'2 6 в дверном проеме l • Цитадель Тахти Санrина расположена в центре города лежащего узкой (до 300) и длинной (около 3000 м) полосой на второй и третьей надпойменной террасах на правом берегу Окса -Амударьи, в самом ее верховье между горным кряжем Тешик-Таш (перья Памира) и руслом реки, в древности более полноводным. Город, так же как и крепости (Тахти Кубад 1 и 3), был стратегическим форпостом, охраняющим,древнюю переправу через Оке в месте слияния Вахша и Пянджа (рис. 1). Храм Окса расположен в центре укрепленной цитадели (рис. 2). К нему с востока от берега реки ведет поднимающийся в сторону храма пандус, проходящий через несколько ворот и привратных сооружений, включающих и парадные колонные пропилеи, вымощенные каменными плитами (рис. 3). Цитадель Тахти Сангина (или Тахти Кубада 2) обрамлена мощной (от 7 до 9 м) стеной, выложенной из сырцовых кирпичей (0,50 х 0,50 х 0,14 м) поздне ахеменидскогораннеэл,линистического стандарта, и снабжена подквадрат ными; монолитными башнями (более 12 м в стороне). В юечжийско-велико кушанский период священный участок включается в цитадель (237 х 167 м), которая в свою очередь обрамляется каменной стеной из небрежно околотого камня (толщиной 2,2, м) и укрепляется башнями (вся эта фортификационная ситуация отчетливо видна на снимке, сделанном с вертолета) (рис. 2). 1 Бслед за опубликованными ахеменидскими ножнами акинака и небольшой частью из 50 найденных бронзовых стрел VI-IV вв. до н.э. The flame of interest in material culture that it sparked nearly half a century ago now seems to wane, like a candle in its final flicker, and the gavels at the most notable auction houses toll nowadays more with disappointment than with euphoria. However, Dorothy Armstrong’s Threads of Empire: Art and the Trade of Ottoman Textiles (V&A Publishing, 2024) may reignite that passion and direct the spotlight once more onto the weaving arts and the broader history of material culture.

The paper presents an analysis of early Avar-period gold sword scabbard fittings, discovered during a metal-detector survey at the site of Szarvas-Kovács-halom and subsequently verified through archaeological excavation. These ornates belonged to the scabbard of a so-called ring-pommel sword with a triple-arched suspension and had been deliberately deposited in a shallow pit. An attempt is made to interpret this exceptional assemblage considering its unusual find circumstances and by comparison with similar Avar-period finds. The analysis also seeks to place the assemblage within the broader context of the Trans-Tisza region and the Carpathian Basin.

In the article the artistic features of the eclectic style in the architecture of Azerbaijan, especially Baku at the end of the 19 thbeginning of the 20 th centuries are analyzed. The construction of public and residential buildings of a new type in urban planning processes after the unification into the Russian Empire, the influence of capitalist production relations and the predominance of European styles in architecture as a result of the activities of foreign architects are mentioned. Along with the trends such as gothic, empire, baroque, modern, elements of the national architectural heritage were introduced. In Baku, the projects of architects such as Zivar bey Ahmadbeyov, I.V. Goslavsky, K.B. Skurevich, I.K. Ploshko, E.Y. Skibinsky played an important role in shaping the stylistic image of the city. Examples such as the Puppet Theater, H.Z. Tagiyev's passage, the building of the Russian Imperial Technical Society, the Olginsky shops and the men's gymnasium are distinguished by the architectural and sculptural synthesis of eclecticism, the classical order system and the richness of decorative elements. Eclecticism provided a synthesis of local (Shirvan-Absheron school) and European architectural schools, creating stylistic diversity in the architectural zone of the city. The unity of form and function, ornate facades, decorative decoration of balconies and pillars, the preservation of national elements in the interiors are noteworthy in the architecture of this period. The application of some successful solutions of that period in the modern architecture demonstrates the continuity of architectural heritage.

В этой статье рассматриваются протоэтнические группы, из которых в дальнейшем сформировались арийская, тохарская, анатолийская, греческая и албанская диалектные общности, в период времени от начала докерамического неолита до конца энеолита. Как и в более ранних работах, данные анализа этноязыковых связей рассматривались в комплексе с данными археологии и палеогенетики. Исследование позволило определить наиболее вероятные пути миграций предков носителей перечисленных языков ИЕ семьи в указанный период. ABSTRACT This article continues a series of works devoted to ethnogenetic processes in the Indo-European (IE) dialect continuum. This article examines the proto-ethnic groups from which the Aryan, Tocharian, Anatolian, Greek, and Albanian dialect communities were later formed the period from the beginning of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic to the end of the Chalcolithic. As in earlier works, the data of the analysis of ethnolinguistic connections were considered in conjunction with the data of archaeology and paleogenetics. The study made it possible to determine the most probable migration paths of the ancestors of the speakers of the listed languages of the IE family during the specified period.

На протяж~нии 28 сезонов Хорезмская экспедиция Института этнографии АН СССР веЛ!1-~СКОПКИ Топрак-!Салыразвалин династического центра Il-III вв. и города, просуществовавшего до УI в. Последние 1 О лет ра(юты шли к северу от городских укреплений, и это позво лило отстоять от распашки, а затем и изучить РУИН~I нескольких дворцо вых и храмовых зданий, составлявших, как оказалось, единый архитектурно планировочный ансамбль!. Следует надеяться, что вслед за монографиями, посвященными городу2 и Высокому дворцу3, выйдет книга о Загородном комплексе. Пока же предлагаемой статьей я попытаюсь ввести в научный оборот ОСНОЩlые сведения о нем. Прежде, однако, следует напомнить, что главным сооружением Топрак-калы 4 был Высокий дворец, занимавший северо-западный угол укрепленного города. Его основная часть была возведена на четырехгранной платформе, площадь которой п 'иближалась в основании к одному гектару, а высота к 15 м. В результате раскопок уд ось нанести на план 102 помещения Центрального массива. Ядром планировки был тронный зал, разделенный трехарочным порталом, под ним пересекались диаг нали квадрата, в который была вписана вся планировка громадного сооружения. Поза и центральной арки на продольной оси дворца находилась тронная ниша. Таким образ м, 'установлено, что точки расположения важнейших элементов дворцовой архитектуры были получены древними строителями в результате предварительных геометрических построений. Как показали наши раскопки, меридиональная ось Высокого дворца в точности совпадала с осью синметрии четырех храмовых зданий Загородного комплекса, на той же линии был найден вход в большой дворец (здание 1) этого ансамбля. Сказанное выше свидетельствует, что строительство Высо кого дворца и Загородного комплекса было предусмотрено одним проектом, важнейшие линии которого с величайшей тщательностью были зафиксированы на местности. 1 Исследованиями 1976-1985 гг. руководил автор статьи. Depictions of vehicles such as carts, chariots, and wagons (vans) found in Central Asian pictorial monuments testify to significant population mobility even before the early nomadic era and to highly developed communication systems in local societies, particularly during the Early and High Bronze Ages. The interconnections between the ancient ethnic groups of Central Asia and Eurasia in the Bronze Age, their cultural genesis, and the nature and directions of migrations are a pressing research issue.

The article briefly discusses the current situation with underwater archaeology on Lake Issyk-Kul, the history of the issue and the results of the last two field seasons of the International Underwater Archaeological Expedition on Lake Issyk-Kul in the Kyrgyz Republic, conducted by the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the B. Dzhamgerchinov Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. This agreement allowed us to continue the research of flooded monuments, which began in Soviet times. During the expeditions of 2023 and 2024, methods were developed on the lake that would systematize the collection of information about the monument, clarify its chronology, its place in the medieval civilization of the region, and also study the circumstances of the immersion of a land area with archaeological sites located on it under water. The work was carried out on the northwestern shore of the lake in the area of the village of Toru-Aigir.

В статье кратко рассматриваются актуальная ситуация с подводной археологией на озере Иссык-Куль, история вопроса и результаты двух последних полевых сезонов Международной подводной археологической экспедиции на озере Иссык-Куль в Киргизской Республике, проводимой Институтом археологии РАН и Институтом истории, археологии и этнологии им. Б. Джамгерчинова НАН КР. Во время экспедиций 2023-2024 гг. на озере отрабатывались методики, которые позволят провести системный сбор информации о памятнике, уточнить его хронологию, его место в средневековой цивилизации региона, а также изучить обстоятельства погружения участка суши, с расположенными на нем археологическими объектами, под воду. Работы проводились на северо-западном берегу озера в районе с. Тору-Айгыр.

Cette journée d'études est organisée dans le cadre des activités du GIS Moyen-Orient et Mondes musulmans (MOMM), en partenariat avec l'Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO), l'Institut français d'études sur l'Asie centrale (IFEAC), le Centre de recherche sur le Monde iranien (CeRMI) et le Centre de recherches Europes-Eurasie (CREE). Elle fait suite aux rencontres qui se sont tenues en février 2023 et décembre 2024. Dans la perspective de renforcer la structuration du champ, la journée d'études a pour ambition de promouvoir les études centrasiatiques en rendant compte de leur dynamisme et de leur diversité, de mettre en relation ses différentes disciplines et composantes, et de proposer un moment d'échanges entre les collègues impliqué-e-s dans les travaux sur la région. L'Asie centrale est ici entendue dans une acception géographique large, s'étendant de l'Iran à la Mongolie et de l'Afghanistan à la Russie.

В статье анализируется коллекция печных изразцов из раскопок Ниена, выделяюся два основных типа (сосудообразные изразцы и изразцы с прямоугольными лицевыми пластинами, декорированные рельефными изображениями, покрытыми глазурью). Сделаны предварительные выводы о временных рамках использования различных видов изразцов в Ниене, выделены изразцовые наборы с основными типами орнаментальных мотивов.

Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) -The more genetic history that is done, the more it is clear that ancient ethnonyms, the names given supposed ethnicities, put a variety of peoples under a single rubric. I talked recently about how the Phoenicians, long thought to be what we would now call Lebanese, were actually a multi-ethnic trading diaspora in which Greeks and Italians took a leading role in North Africa and Spain -even if they worshiped the god Baal and adopted a Semitic lingua franca. Now Tatiana V. Andreeva and her colleagues have published a major study of the dna of 131 ancient Scythians, who lived in the Eurasian steppes beyond the Black Sea and at times ruled a vast empire that encompassed Crimea and southern Russia, stretching east. It turns out that they weren't one people.

A hoard or a group of coins with its categorically stated find spot is brought here for the attention of scholars. Such hoards prove quite helpful in establishing circulation of particular coins at a certain period and place. The present lots of coins are important evidence concerning coinage and history of the Late Kushans in ancient Gandhara region.

The bilingual (rus/eng) monograph is a complete publication of the materials of a big satellite barrow located within the archaeological site Tunnug 1 to the south of the central “royal” kurgan dated to the Bronze/Iron Age transition period. The barrow belongs to the Kokel archaeological culture, which existed on the territory of Tuva in the 3–4 centuries CE.

I argue that the Scythian custom described at Herodotus IV.7 is related to the horse sacrifices known to have been practised by other ancient Indo-European-speaking groups in India, Italy and Ireland and reconstructed for the culture of Proto-Indo-European speakers, as well as some associated human sacrifices (performed or envisaged). Herodotus outlines the ritual significance of the sacred objects possession of which legitimises Scythian kings, stating that a man who falls asleep during the annual festival held in their honour is said not to live through the year and consequently is given as much land as he can ride around in a day. This description contains several elements mirrored elsewhere, especially in the Indic horse sacrifice (the Aśvamedha). Textually at least, this Indic sacrifice had a counterpart (the Puruṣamedha) in which the victim was a man; Puhvel argues that this peculiarity is paralleled in Roman culture, concluding that '[i]n tradition if not in practice, the aśvamedha could be "upgraded" to a puruṣamedha' in Indo-European culture (1987: 272-273). I suggest that the custom described at Herodotus IV.7 constitutes (at least a relic of) a Puruṣamedha-like rite, since Herodotus explicitly states that the man involved was seen by the Scythians as having been marked for death by the gods, his falling asleep in the open during the festival being perceived as a sign of this fate. I further speculate that the divine recipient of the Scythian sacrifice may have been the Scythian god identified by Herodotus with the Greek Ares.

Alexander the Great was one of the greatest characters known in history. Born in 356 BCE  in  Pella,  the  son  of  King  Philip  II  of  Macedonia,  he  fought  alongside  his  father  in  the battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE. After becoming king at the age of only 20, he first ruthlessly quelled rebellions within Greece and then in the spring of 334 BCE brought war to Persia, conquering it as he also defeated the entire ancient Near East up to the Indus River. After he died in 323 BCE, a massive cult of Alexander was initiated by his successors  who  justified  their  rule  based  on  personal  closeness  to  Alexander.  Among  Hellenistic  rulers,  he  became  the  model  of  Basileus  (imitatio  Alexandri)  for  others  to  refer to. Pyrrhus (318–272 BCE), monarch of Epirus, was the first to be inspired by the model of Alexander, by propagating his heroic lineage from Achilles,11 Nenci 1992: 173–186. as Alexander had previously done with Dionysus. A particularly important role was attributed to Ptole-maic Egypt as the city of Alexandria ad Aegyptum, founded by Alexander himself; for nearly  seven  centuries  it  was  the  home  of  his  mummified  body.  Visiting  his  tomb  in  Alexandria was common for Roman military leaders.
