We are constantly photographing and being photographed while feeding machine learning databases with our data, which in turn is used to generate new images. Analyzing the transformation of photography by computation—and the transformation of human perception by algorithmically driven images, from CGI to AI—The Perception Machine investigates what it means for us to live surrounded by image flows and machine eyes. In an astute and engaging argument, Joanna Zylinska brings together media theory and neuroscience in a Vilém Flusser–Paul Virilio remix. Her “perception machine” names a technical universe of images and their infrastructures. But it also refers to a sociopolitical condition resulting from today’s automation of vision, imaging—and imagination.

Este seminario tiene como objeto el análisis comparado, en sus diferentes derivadas nacionales, del papel desempeñado por la violencia institucionalizada del Estado en los fenómenos de violencia de masas del siglo XX. Los regímenes autoritarios y totalitarios pusieron al servicio de su obsesión purificadora todos los recursos
de los modernos aparatos estatales, desplegando todo un repertorio de disposiciones legislativas y mecanismos represivos para alcanzar sus metas de homogeneización social. Esta labor de ingeniería social en el diseño y consecución de la sociedad perfecta del mañana conllevó la aparición del “Estado jardinero”, empeñado en la erradicación de las “malas plantas” que amenazaban la armonía de sus vergeles. Tampoco los regímenes liberales resultaron ajenos a esta dinámica,
especialmente en un momento en el que sintieron amenazada su supervivencia, fuese por el ascenso del movimiento obrero o por la oleada contrarrevolucionaria que recorrió el continente en esta época. El miedo al enemigo interno los empujó a un recorte de libertades civiles y a la adopción de medidas de control social que pudiesen contener ese desafío existencial al que hacían frente. Purpose of the article: Current students of Czech and Slovak universities have lived most of their lives in the separate Czech/Slovak Republic, in new political, economic and technological conditions and also in a more intensive contact with members of other cultures than the previous generations. This could have affected their self-identification, national sentiments and attitudes to the EU. There is minimum empirical knowledge answering the question whether this hypothesis is right. The aim of the research was to contribute to the reduction of this deficit in knowledge and provide a starting point for further, more extensive, studies. Methodology/methods: The research used a sample of 134 Czech and 119 Slovak students of economy oriented universities. En este artículo exploro cómo las usuarias de TikTok construyen y negocian su identidad artística a través de sus performances musicales, una identidad que denomino TikTok Persona. Basándome en mi investigación etnográfica sobre el musicar en esta plataforma, analizo cómo influyen factores como el género, la clase, la raza y los entornos multimedia —dispositivos, plataformas y espacios físicos— en dichas prácticas. Sostengo que, más allá de hacer música, las TikTo- kers performan identidades atravesadas por normas interseccionales. Además, reflexiono sobre el papel del público y del algoritmo en la validación de estas identidades. Propongo entender la TikTok Persona como una construcción colectiva y dinámica, expresada a través del cuerpo, la voz y las tecnologías digitales.

In this article, I explore how TikTok users construct and negotiate their artistic identity through musical performances—an identity I refer to as the TikTok Persona. Drawing on my ethnographic research into musicking on the platform, I analyze how factors such as gender, class, race, and multimedia environments — including devices, platforms, and physical spaces — shape these practices. I argue that beyond making music, TikTokers perform identities shaped by intersecting social norms. I also reflect on the role of audiences and algorithms in validating these identities. I propose understanding the TikTok Persona as a collective and dynamic construction, expressed through the body, the voice, and digital technologies.

This special issue explores the encounter between cultural memory, media, and autonomy in collaborative printing and editorial projects. In recent years, there has been a rise in Indigenous publishing involving collaboration with anthropologists and/or anthropological knowledge. Indigenous collectives often invite anthropologists to support their autonomous publishing projects centered around history and cultural revitalization, due to their presumed interest in recording everyday performances and mobilizing diverse publics. In contemporary Latin America, cultural revitalization is often linked to Indigenous autonomy, interrogating and rekindling memory when salvage anthropology is considered unfashionable and impractical. Yet the reappropriation and repurposing of ethnographic knowledge may offer the possibility to retrace what no longer is, remember and retransmit in various ways, make present anew, or even create alternative forms of (re)presentation. The articles in this special issue explore the dynamics of collaboration in the context of decolonial initiatives and the persistence and transformation of mediatic forms. En los últimos años, ha habido un auge en la publicación indígena que implica la colaboración con antropólogos y/o conocimientos antropológicos. Los colectivos indígenas suelen invitar a antropólogos a apoyar sus proyectos editoriales autónomos centrados en la historia y la revitalización cultural, debido a su supuesto interés en registrar representaciones cotidianas y movilizar a públicos diversos. En la América Latina contemporánea, la revitalización cultural suele estar vinculada a la autonomía indígena, cuestionando y reavivando la memoria cuando la antropología de rescate se considera pasada de moda y poco práctica. Sin embargo, la reapropiación y la readaptación del conocimiento etnográfico pueden ofrecer la posibilidad de reconstruir lo que ya no existe, recordar y retransmitir de diversas maneras, renovar el presente o incluso crear formas alternativas de (re)presentación. Los artículos de este número especial exploran la dinámica de la colaboración en el contexto de las iniciativas decoloniales y la persistencia y transformación de las formas mediáticas.

Na aldeia raiana da Moimenta, concelho de Vinhais, Trás-os-Montes, foram realizadas entrevistas informais a dois grupos de habitantes com o objectivo de identificar e catalogar as utilizações mais comuns da flora local, bem como as tradições e tecnologias agrárias associadas. Os inquiridos foram seleccionados por ser consensual na aldeia o seu grande conhecimento dos usos tradicionais das plantas. Cada grupo é constituído por três elementos, distinguindo-se pelo facto de terem estado sempre ligados à aldeia e à actividade agrícola (Grupo I) ou por terem vivido e exercido vida activa fora do termo (Grupo II). O trabalho de campo decorreu de Fevereiro a Novembro de 2000 e implicou, para além da recolha, identificação e herborização do material vegetal, o registo de todas as utilizações e receituários e a participação em diferentes tarefas relacionadas com a actividade agrícola ou com a colheita e manipulação de plantas. Os resultados disponíveis permitem estimar a existência de cerca de uma centena de espécies vegetais, outrora fundamentais no dia a dia da população, pelo seu carácter alimentar, condimentar, medicinal, utilitário, veterinário, mercantil, recreativo e mágico. Relevante neste trabalho foi o entusiasmo manifestado pelos elementos dos grupos e por uma grande parte dos residentes, apesar da contínua erosão dos saberes e usos tradicionais. Este interesse da população pôde ser avaliado pela iniciativa conjunta de semear um talhão de linho, com vista à observação e descrição do ciclo do linho, cultura muito antiga na aldeia e actualmente inexistente.

La locura es el territorio donde se pierden no solo las personas sino las sociedades. La conexión entre locura y literatura ha sido una constante a través de la historia, desde las grandes obras clásicas como Hamlet y Don Quijote, pasando por el romanticismo europeo, los surrealistas del siglo veinte, hasta las narrativas postmodernas del cruce de milenio. Dicha asociación encuentra su cauce en Latinoamérica con el advenimiento de una narrativa contestataria, atrevida y divergente en las letras femeninas contemporáneas. Este ensayo explora tres novelas latinoamericanas que utilizan la irracionalidad para transmitir mensajes sobre lo oculto, lo impensable y lo no dicho en los conflictos sociales y políticos del continente. En los textos analizados la locura tiene como objetivo presentar una realidad desde una óptica diferente. Se establece así una correlación entre locura, mirada y literatura, como si la locura fuera el resultado de aprehender realidades desde una mirada alternativa para transmitir un mensaje que cuestiona o redefine una realidad. Las novelas que analizo son La nave de los locos (1984) de la uruguaya Cristina Peri Rossi, Nadie me verá llorar (1999) de la mexicana Cristina Rivera Garza y Delirio (2004) de la colombiana Laura Restrepo. En cada caso, la locura actúa como el código a través de la cual se propone una mirada alterna a las categorías fijas. Este análisis se enfoca en la mirada de la locura como focalización, símbolo y analogía para cuestionar, denunciar y reflejar la irracionalidad del mundo circundante. Michel Foucault en su obra Historia de la locura en la época clásica, demostró que la razón no puede existir sin la sinrazón, y como consecuencia, las diferentes formas de comprender, expresar y ver la locura a través de la historia humana revelan más acerca de la sociedad que de la propia enfermedad propiamente dicha. 2 Esto explica porque la figura del insano mental se ha convertido en un símbolo de un mundo en crisis y en ocasiones, en el espejo que refleja una conciencia crítica de la humanidad. Lilian Feder ha señalado que el estudio de las representaciones literarias de personajes con una experiencia mental diferente a la mayoría, ayuda a comprender los fenómenos complejos de una sociedad propiamente dicha. En su libro Madness in Literature, esta crítica llama -impairments of symbolization‖ a estos fenómenos complejos que conjugan identidad y experiencia mental (6). Feder explica que, -al emplear símbolos tales como metáforas y analogías, el personaje irracional se convierte en el intérprete de los mensajes aparentemente indescifrables de los locos‖ (mi traducción 7). El presente análisis sigue la perspectiva antropológica cultural, que define la locura como una forma diferente de ver y entender el mundo circundante y examina los comportamientos -irracionales‖ condenados por la sociedad que se derivan de esta divergencia. Mi análisis se centra entonces en las técnicas y recursos literarios usados en las obras mencionadas para demostrar la dinámica entre razón y sinrazón. El estudio de la literatura revela una conciencia crítica de los períodos históricos y de las sociedades en que éstos se producen. Las dos grandes obras de la literatura universal que utilizan la figura del loco y la locura, Don Quijote y Hamlet, moldearon una nueva forma de mirar el mundo y la sociedad. Despite being a unesco World Heritage site, Lijiang in China's mountainous southwest is not a renowned city in world history, yet there is no doubt that, after reading the works of Joseph Rock (1884-1962) and Peter Goullart (1901-1978), Ezra Pound perceived it as befitting such a status. Lijiang in Pound's Cantos becomes both an ideal construct of the poetic mind and a real, achievable paradiso terrestre. In this glorified hieratic landscape, Pound places his friends who introduced him to the Naxi people and culture: Rock and Goullart. While Rock's influence on Pound is clear to see in the published Cantos, to find Goullart's name we must read Pound's unpublished poetry drafts. By investigating Goullart's previously unstudied correspondence, this essay makes the case that Goullart played an equally important role in Pound's poetic construction of Lijiang.

Archaeological contexts sometimes yield artefacts that
are interpreted by scholars as ‘heirlooms’. Although the
criteria of identifying them in the archaeological record
are still not fully clear, these are considered objects of
memory passed down in a human group at variable social
levels (family, tribes, communities etc.) through generations,
as symbolic markers of hereditary rank, ancestry,
ethnicity and personal bond. I will present a case from a
funerary area of Libarna, a Roman town located in the
Regio IX of Italia (Eastern Piedmont). This necropolis,
whose occupation is dated between the first and third centuries
AD, yielded a group of 36 tombs, both inhumations
and cremations. One of these contained a child aged
5–10 years old, according to anthropological analysis. A
rich outfit, including personal objects in precious materials
and pottery typical of the Roman tradition, was placed
along the child and dates the grave to the late first–second
century AD. Within the grave goods, remarkable is the
presence of a bronze object, conventionally called ‘borchia
a scudetto’ in the archaeological literature. This is
likely a cloth ornament frequently documented in the pre-Roman
indigenous tombs and settlements of Liguria from
the third to early first century BC. In this paper I will try
to analyse the meaning of such an artifact, by focusing on
the following key questions: (1) Can we consider this
older object a ‘family heirloom’? (2) Why was it placed in
a child’s tomb and how does this relate to the other grave
goods? (3) Does the presence of the ornament within the
funerary outfits reveal any form of individual or collective
memory and personal attachment of the child (or of the
living, who buried the child) toward family members,
including their ‘ethnic’ component and how?

Despite four decades of active presence in society and the country’s colonial history, Islam in Italy is still perceived as an unfamiliar and hostile religion and culture. Utilizing a cultural and socio-historical approach rooted in the sociology of literature, this chapter examines contemporary Italian literature on and by Muslims, aiming to deconstruct stereotypes and reframe the narrative surrounding “Islam in Italy.” Focusing on works such as Rhoda (2004) by Igiaba Scego, Clash of Civilizations Over an Elevator in Piazza Vittorio (2008 [2006]) by Amara Lakhous and Timira (2012) by Wu Ming 2 and Antar Mohamed, the analysis will be situated within two contexts: the securitarian framing of Islam in contemporary Italian politics and society, and the “forgotten” colonial past. These texts shed light on the ongoing negotiation that Muslims in Italy engage in to define their identity, visibility and the construction of “Italian Muslimness.”

The memory of resistance and struggle against fascism in socialist Yugoslavia was not only mobilized by the aesthetic or visual narrative potential of memorial sculptural or architectural projects, but also by the materiality that served, at the same time, as an objective and documentary record, and as an affective means of transmitting memory. By exploring how memory of resistance was mediated through wartime objects’ and sites’ materiality, this chapter points to the centrality of material culture for contemporary critical studies of heritage-making practices of socialist Yugoslavia. The chapter highlights a terminological distinction between the general term “resistance” and the more specific “People’s Liberation Struggle” (NOB) as a framework for understanding the shifting logic of heritage politics in the former Yugoslavian region. The author situates the topic of the materiality of war and revolution within the broader context of Yugoslav cultural and memory politics. The memory transfer through the materiality of resistance is demonstrated on two levels: (1) How the “authenticity“ of the Yugoslav resistance sites — focusing on Partisan hospitals as one of the central topos of resistance — was treated by conservationists and by artists/architects, and how the traditional monument was rethought to serve as a bridge between the visitors and materiality in situ, and (2) how the material remains of the war were extracted from their original context, and reused in artistic works included in the museums of NOB or memorial houses. Finally, the chapter addresses the challenges related to the shifting value of material culture in various post-Yugoslav and post-socialist contexts.

Rituales, conmemoraciones, testimonios y sitios de memoria fueron mirados desde las ciencias sociales y analizados de diferentes maneras. La consagracion de la memoria, tesis doctoral de Ana Guglielmucci, analiza las formas mediante las cuales diversos actores de la ciudad de Buenos Aires han construido, preservado y difundido memorias comunes sobre la violencia politica de los anos setenta. El foco del analisis esta puesto los mecanismos a traves de los cuales determinadas narraciones se consolidaron como hegemonicas y se materializaron en sitios de memoria y monumentos. D

Birinci bölümde bireysel ve kolektif bellek kavramları psikolojik ve  felsefi temellerle ele alınmakta, anıların nasıl yapılandırıldığı ve geçmişin nasıl yeniden kurgulandığı açıklanmaktadır. Üçüncü bölümde ise Türkiye tiyatrosunun tarihsel belleği, bastırılmış anlatılar ve kimlik politikaları bağlamında ele alınmakta; örnek oyunlar üzerinden meta-teatral stratejilerle bu anlatıların sahneye nasıl taşındığı gösterilmektedir.

It has been long acknowledged that the functional differentiation between storage and interface, proposed by John von Neumann, is the essential condition for the self-reproduction of living beings: enabling evolution, the fundamental separation of memory from interaction increases the chances of open systems to withstand the all-devouring entropic pressure of the surrounding universe. However, the interest in the distinction has been very unevenly spread between natural and social sciences: extensively and fruitfully discussed in structural linguistics, code biology and semiotics, the dialectics of storage and interface in culture has so far evaded serious scrutiny. This preliminary study is an attempt to fill the gap.

This entry examines post-socialist transitions, not as the legacy of failed socialist experiments, but of the collapse of an alternative model of capitalist modernity. This model, grounded in the institutions of the nation-state and the exploitation of proletarian labor, was embraced by both socialist and anti-colonial movements across Europe and Asia. In countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia, socialist revolutions and struggles for national self-determination gave rise to new nations founded on ethno-majoritarian politics, which in turn fueled ethnic conflicts and refugee crises, most notably the Vietnamese exodus after 1975. Such refugee crises have continued to emerge as products of the modern institutions of capitalism and nationalism, underscoring the need for a socialism without the nation-state.

The archive, in its variables of collecting private or public documents, relating to a person, family, municipality or state, is configured as a circumscribed place, with limited access or reserved for specific users. Its historical connection -especially the archive as institution -with power and various forms of long-standing hegemony, while it has contributed to arousing its fascination and a certain aura of mystery in recent decades, has been paralleled with a profound questioning and recognition of its problematic "neutral technology" (Azoulay, 2019). To consider that a collection of written texts, visual works, volumes, and photographs, and moving images composes a corpus can lead us back to the etymology of the Latin term, which takes on this meaning much later. Before, it referred to a body, individual, person, or living being, as well as a corpse, inanimate body, matter, organism, and structure. If we then maintain the polysemy of the corpus to diversify the archives in which they live, we will suddenly find ourselves faced with a variety of typologies that expand the very notion of the archive, push it out of protective walls, dirty it, contaminate it and regenerate it, making it

Abstract — Binary Prayer: Counting God

If physics treats the universe as a system of information and mathematical rules, then religion can be usefully reframed as a human information-engineering practice: rituals, doctrines, and myths are compression algorithms that encode meaning, coordinate behavior, and stabilize communities in the face of uncertainty. This essay argues that science and faith solve complementary problems—prediction versus actionable meaning—and that recasting belief as a socio-symbolic technology clarifies where each domain succeeds, where it fails, and how policy, public health, education, and design can bridge them. Rather than collapse into a culture war, we should test belief-systems by pragmatic metrics (do they reduce suffering, sustain cohesion, improve decision-making?) and treat rituals as data structures to be measured, respected, and iterated. The result is a modest, practical reconciliation: keep the math honest; keep the metaphors humane.

My academic journey at the Youth Research Centre (YRC) in the past four years has been a great experience. Not only have I been working in a collegial and supportive environment, but I have also been oriented to a life with twin roles: a PhD student and a father of two. I am grateful to many people's wisdom and support in making this journey a joyful one, and to the University of Melbourne for the scholarship granted to me to conduct this study. My academic journey at the Youth Research Centre (YRC) in the past four years has been a great experience. Not only have I been working in a collegial and supportive environment, but I have also been oriented to a life with twin roles: a PhD student and a father of two. Kashmir dispute is the most important burning issue between India and Pakistan as they have fought three major wars and two conflicts since 1947. Kashmir dispute arises when British India was separated into Pakistan and India on 15th August 1947 under the Indian Independence Act 1947. Independent Indian States could accede either to Pakistan or India as on 26th October 1947, Hari Singh signed treaty of accession with the Indian Government while the Governor General of India: Mountbatten remarked that after clearance from insurgency, plebiscite would take place in the state and the people of Kashmir would decide either to go with Pakistan or India. During war of Kashmir in 1947, India went to United Nations (UN) and asked for mediation, UN passed resolution on 20th January 1948 to assist peaceful resolution of Kashmir Dispute as another resolution was passed on 21st April 1948 for organization of plebiscite in Kashmir. India holds 43% of the region, Pakistan holds 37% and remaining 1...

Technical Reports are published for timely dissemination of research results and scientific work carried out at the Department of Civil Engineering (DCE) at Aalborg University. This medium allows publication of more detailed explanations and results than typically allowed in scientific journals. Technical Memoranda are produced to enable the preliminary dissemination of scientific work by the personnel of the DCE where such release is deemed to be appropriate. Documents of this kind may be incomplete or temporary versions of papers-or part of continuing work. This should be kept in mind when references are given to publications of this kind.

Genocide Studies is in deep crisis, exposed by Israel’s assault on Gaza. This is not accidental but structural: the field was built on the twin exceptionalisms of the Holocaust and the State of Israel. These foundations have collapsed. As Hannah Arendt warned, the banister is gone; we are left without orientation. The very event we seek to understand has stripped us of our traditional tools of comprehension, including the moral compass we once relied upon to distinguish right from wrong. What we now witness among many Holocaust scholars is not hesitation but a blatant denialism—eerily reminiscent of the strategies long familiar from Armenian Genocide denial. It is, in fact, a déjà vu. I argue that we must abandon the overburdened term genocide, de-exceptionalize both the Holocaust and Israel, and restore moral outrage as the core impulse of our discipline. Gaza is not an exception but a revealing case that forces us to rethink the future of the field itself.

Domestic architecture played a central role in the identity of later prehistoric communities, particularly in creating lasting bonds between the living and the dead. Acting as a conduit of memory and legacy for successive generations of inhabitants, roundhouses straddled the divide between house and memorial. The exceptionally well preserved Late Iron Age settlement at Broxmouth in southeast Scotland demonstrates the potential of biographical approaches in understanding the central role that roundhouses played in fashioning the identity of successive households, and the role of objects in constructing genealogical narratives.

After two years of work at Nantes Université, this thesis aims to a better understanding of the relationship between Greeek cities and major defeats in their history.

Focusing on British artist Marcus Coates's Apology to the Great Auk, a short film documenting an official apology to an extinct bird, this article explores the possibility and desirability of political apologies for anthropogenic species extinction. While the apology presented in the film fails to meet key criteria, it nonetheless offers something of political value. Coates's work constitutes an audacious and innovative attempt to leverage ecological grief and guilt to counteract dominant discourses that devalue more-than-human life; to redraw the boundaries of the moral, legal, and political community; and to imagine a future of multispecies flourishing. By interpreting Apology to the Great Auk through the lenses of environmental transitional justice, bad environmentalism, and ecological prefiguration, the article demonstrates its potential as an artistic project, and the potential of ecological apologies more generally, to help us think and work towards care, justice, and moral repair beyond the human.

L'objectif théorique du séminaire est de problématiser la catégorie polémique de « modernité » à partir des débats traversant la philosophie, l'anthropologie, la littérature, les arts et les sciences, sans limites temporelles ni géographiques. Ouvert aux étudiantes et étudiants, doctorantes et doctorants, chercheuses et chercheurs confirmés, quelle que soit leur discipline d'origine, le séminaire « Problèmes de la modernité » se veut être un lieu de formation et d'échanges à la fois libres et informés. Il se focalisera cette année sur les questions écologiques.

When I was told that the acknowledgements were one of the hardest parts of a dissertation to write I thought that could not possibly be the case. But having to write them now I realize that there are so few expressions for "thank you", whereas there are so many people who have supported me during the past five and a half years. The paper examines the influence of the literature of Hasidism on the oeuvre of contemporary Hungarian poet Szilárd Borbély (1963-1914). It analyzes the workings of regional cultural memory and the memory of the exterminated rural Jewish population, as well as of the former representatives of Hasidism in Hungary in Borbély's works. It also examines the poetics of his collection of poems Funereal Splendour and, more specifically, the fusion of Christian and Jewish elements, in which the principle of bricolage prevails, creating a specific, culturally hybrid poetic language. The most important example of this hybridization is the appearance of the messianic motif in the oeuvre, to which this study devotes special attention. Finally, the use of a Hasidic story-type in two of Borbély's works is also discussed.

En este texto, con el que contribuyo al "Libro digno de censura. Escritura en contextos autoritarios. Historia, memoria, experiencia" editado por Eduardo Tamayo Belda, Carlota Matesanz Sanchioli y Gonzalo Vitón García, analizo tres contextos de escritura sobre y desde las homosexualidades en la dictadura franquista. Para ello utilizo la teoría del etiquetaje, propia de la sociología de la desviación, la de la espiral del silencio, de Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann, o los planteamientos de James C. Scott en torno a la resistencia discursiva de los oprimidos. Con la dialéctica entre censura y autocensura de fondo, mi objetivo es plantear la complejidad del un contexto franquista que, violencia mediante, hacía de la soledad del papel un valioso reducto en el que volcar ideas y experiencias contrarias a la moral y a las buenas costumbres.
