Davvero la capacità di apprezzare la bellezza del mondo è riservata esclusivamente alla nostra specie? Se cosí fosse, come spiegare la straordinaria varietà degli ornamenti animali apparentemente privi di una funzione di sopravvivenza? Questo enigma è al centro del pensiero di Charles Darwin che, parlando per la prima volta di senso estetico animale, scuote dalle fondamenta la filosofia dell’arte tradizionale. L’estetica tocca in Darwin un punto di non ritorno: non piú filosofia del bello e delle arti, ma una capacità di cruciale importanza nella storia evolutiva degli esseri viventi. Dalla celebre spedizione darwiniana intorno al mondo alle piú recenti acquisizioni delle scienze cognitive, dell’archeologia preistorica, dell’antropologia, della psicologia sperimentale e persino dell’ornitologia, questo libro si interroga sul passaggio dal senso estetico animale alla nascita dell’arte, e rivela il ruolo decisivo della bellezza nella nostra stessa evoluzione.

Wharton's Aesthetics and the Ethics of Affect Characters can only exist, and the author can only create them, because they do not perceive but have passed into the landscape and are themselves part of the compound of sensations. .. Affects are precisely these nonhuman becomings of man.

In contemporary debate regarding neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, philosophy or anthropology it is commonplace to analyse the problem of the mind focusing on its emotional or, alternatively, cognitive and, lastly its symbolic character. Therefore, it is frequently spoken of as an emotional, a cognitive, or a symbolic mind. In the context of an increasingly branched dialogue and convergence of scientific and philosophical investigation with respect to the mind-body problem, philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists and physicists have focused, in recent years, on the aesthetic dimension of the mind. The aesthetic Mind is the title of an important book published by Oxford University Press in 2011 and edited by Elisabeth Schellekens and Peter Goldie. According to the editors, the central question driving the volume is «how […] can the empirical work of the sciences be integrated with the more a priori investigations which have traditionally characterized philosophy, and vice versa» and still more specifically, «what role exactly does philosophy have to play in understanding aesthetic and aesthetic experience?». The same title (in its Italian version, of course) was to be given to a book I published in April of the same year and that was titled, instead, La percezione riflessa. Estetica e filosofia della mente. The Reflected Perception. Aesthetics and the Philosophy of mind. At this point it isn't necessary to explain how the term «percezione riflessa» (a direct translation of the German «die reflektierte Wahrnehmung», as used by Kant in the § VII of the Introduction to the Critique of the Power of Judgment) expresses fundamentally the aesthetic nature of the mind. This paper should help to clarify the issue. Following this assumption, the human mind is not only capable of cognition, emotion, and developing symbols. It is also an aesthetic mind. The word «human» is here not redundant. With an expanding knowledge of materials, their construction and properties, science would have sat comfortably amongst the progression of the visual arts throughout the 19th century - with cultural classes coequally as likely to attend a scientific lecture on the latest endeavour, just as they were on a work of art and its exploration. 

However, with the onset of modern times, this integration has become somewhat fragmented , showing an increased facilitation for specialisation; resulting it to be near impossible to study each subject simultaneously. In turn, we can suggest an acceptance not to understand something of importance due to its ‘scientific’ nature, but stylish to feign an understanding of the arts. 

Challenges have presented this newfound segregation, the most substantial being the emergence of a cultural divide. We are seeing a fading interest in the arts attention to this now considered ‘high culture’, an insight into a society preoccupied with scientific skill, which is somewhat a differencing relation of expression seen in art, drama and music.

Using a collection of research from art philosophers as well as scientific researchers, with information sourced from CERN’s archives, this essay will discuss the cultural differences presented before us. Firstly exploring the role to what each institution provides within their respected field, to a progression onto how and by what means this is being accomplished to bridge this gap; with conclusions drawn to the obstacles faced by artists trying the overcome and unite this divide.

È possibile ripensare l'estetica a partire da ciò che la quotidianità esibisce in tutta la sua evidenza? Decaduto l'esclusivo parametro dell'arte per indicare l'estetico, è possibile definire l'estetica nei termini di estetica applicata? Simili interrogativi incorniciano il problematico passaggio dall'arte applicata ottocentesca a ciò che oggi si indica con la formula, forse non felicissima, di estetica diffusa e storicamente con la mutazione della società industriale in società post-industriale. Un ripensamento dell'estetica non può non fare i conti con quello che il quotidiano intende con questo termine, un'estetica sempre più applicata ai gusti, alle scelte, ai problemi di un senso comune che non si ri-conosce più in quel totem abusato che fu l'arte. Un'estetica che vive il proprio senso, per dirla con Benjamin, non nell'unicità della sua rappresentazione, ma nella serialità, o in modo meno severo, nella pluralità della propria produzione. La definizione di un'estetica abbinata ai prodotti dell'industria trovò nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento varie risposte. Si potrebbe affermare che furono risposte più cultu-rali in senso lato che analisi estetologiche legate all'oggetto industriale in sé. Tuttavia complessivamente concorsero a far maturare una nuova visione che coincise con l'emancipazione estetica dell'oggetto d'uso, il primo grande protagonista dell'estetica applicata. Una delle prime categorie a emergere fu quella della merce. Essa fu colta sia come massima espressione di un'estetica che negava la natura come suo modello a favore dell'artificio come nel caso di Baudelaire, sia come manifestazione di un feticismo che proiettava sugli oggetti contenuti spirituali mistificando gli stessi rapporti sociali come argomentò Marx. Artificio e feticismo divennero nel tempo due paradigmi impre-scindibili per una lettura ideologica dell'oggetto definendone sostanzialmente l'estetica. Ma certamente quest'opzione non rimase l'unica. Il tentativo di rimarginare la frattura moderna della techne, la separazione tra arte bella e artigianato e poi arte applicata, comportò un problematico riesame della stessa nozione dell'autonomia dell'estetico.

I sometimes feel bad for Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Clearly, Darwin won the day: his iconic beard adorning countless T-shirts, his every word scrutinized, every pigeon breeding, and seed sprouting, experiment celebrated. Darwin was interred at Westminster Abbey, just across from Sir Isaac Newton, whereas Wallace lays modestly on a pine-shaded hill in the little-visited cemetery in Broadstone, by the sea. Wallace had a beard too, you know, and quite a respectable one. And, suffering from a malarial fever in a hammock in the jungles of the Malay Archipelago in early March 1858, he did send that famous letter back to England, jolting Darwin to publish his theory in The Origin. Wallace, as one reviewer of his autobiography commented at the turn of the twentieth century, may have been the only man who believed in spiritualism, phrenology, anti-vaccination, and an Earth-centered universe whose life was worth writing. He was through and through a pioneering evolutionist. And yet it is Darwin after whom the theory of evolution is named. Truth be told, Darwin deserves it. He had been working on his theory for over twenty years before he received Wallace's letter, and his life was devoted to it in ways both grand and small that justify the credit he's been given. Wallace himself recognized this, giving the title Darwinism to a book he authored in 1889, eight years after Darwin's passing. Recently, Wallace has been the subject of a good number of full-scale, serious biographies. And so it seems history has gotten it right this time. Got it right, that is, with one big exception. For in that very same book, Darwinism, Wallace rejected "female choice," a term his hero had invented and wrote a door-stopper of a tome to prove. In The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, published in 1869, Darwin argued that alongside natural selection, there is a second, independent force with a logic of its own. Traditionally-and at least until very recently 1-aesthetics has not been a main access route to the understanding of Wittgenstein's philosophy, of the challenges and issues that Wittgenstein's work brings up, from the Tractatus on. It is not on the playground of aesthetics that the game of interpretation of typically Wittgensteinian issues-such as the significance of philosophy, the limits of language, the nature of meaning, the relationship between grammar and forms of life-has been played. At best, aesthetic problems have been considered a significant, but secondary aspect of the core of Wittgenstein's philosophy, defined, first and foremost, by the issue concerning the relationship between logic and language, and the resulting confrontation with his mentors, Frege and Russell. An aspect of Wittgenstein's views, possibly related to his Viennese education within his "very musical" family and/or linked with his pessimistic critique of European Civilization. An aspect, however, incapable of influencing Wittgenstein's formulation of philosophical problems and strategy for addressing them. Sulla ontogenesi della dimensione simbolica Quello di indicare una prospettiva per «riconcepire l'estetica» sarebbe un compito per me assai arduo, se non mi venisse in soccorso il fatto che questo dibattito non ha luogo per ragioni arbitrarie, ma a seguito di due precise circostanze editoriali: la nuova edizio-ne dell'Estetica razionale di Maurizio Ferraris e la pubblicazione de La percezione riflessa di Fabrizio Desideri. Ecco allora che il compito diviene, forse, più facilmente assolvibile, quantomeno perché non mi trovo più di fronte al mare aperto di ciò che può esser detto "estetico" e di tutti i problemi cui questa definizione può dar luogo, ma a una serie di problemi già ragionatamente messi a fuoco. Lo spunto per dare avvio alla mia breve ri-flessione lo prendo, appunto, da uno di questi due saggi, quello di Desideri, che in un passaggio del quinto capitolo si confronta con le tesi dell'antropologo americano Ter-rence W. Deacon circa il ruolo della «facoltà estetica» nella ontogenesi della dimensione simbolica umana. Della proposta teorica di Deacon si è parlato nei termini di un «Mani-festo della neurosemiotica» (cfr. Deacon [2001]: XI); essa muove infatti da un lato, dalle nuove frontiere teoriche aperte dalle neuroscienze e dal cognitivismo dinamicista, dall'altro, da un recupero di più datate posizioni antropologiche e filosofiche, con parti-colare riferimento alla semiotica di Peirce e alla filosofia delle forme simboliche di Cassi-rer. A seguito di queste premesse teoriche, la riflessione di Deacon conferisce un'impor-tanza decisiva alla «facoltà estetica» nel quadro della genesi e della evoluzione della di-mensione simbolica. Per Deacon, come scrive Desideri, «la facoltà estetica è specie-specifica dell'uomo ed è in strettissima connessione con lo sviluppo della capacità di trattare "oggetti e azioni come segni (icone, indici o simboli) per qualcosa di là da essi"» (Desideri [2011]: 120). The concept of animal (non-human) aesthetics is part of an effort to place the human in a larger than human context, taking into account the (non-central) place of humankind in the cosmic and natural environment. The thesis of a non-anthropocentric aesthetics has enjoyed a certain popularity in recent years, developing in various directions, opening up new areas of research and discussion (such as "animal theory", "animal turn"), and raising new questions on the role of art and experience in general. The growing attention for the connection between the sciences of life and aesthetological issues (Pinotti, Tedesco 2013) has re-opened the anthropological (and post-human) question, and various disciplines have become involved in the debate on animalness, from a neuro-scientific perspective or in the context of the similarly variegated field of evolutionary aesthetics (Davies 2012; Grammer, Voland 2003; Portera 2015). Studies on non-human aesthetics, still in a pioneering phase, play a crucial role in questioning and revisiting traditional views of the aesthetic experience, and thus in redefining the very image of the human and transhuman. What is at stake is the possibility of a non-human origin of aesthetics (Aiken 1998; Desideri, Dissanayake 2015), or better the possibility of conceiving a global aesthetics, that is an aesthetics capable of overcoming the human/non-human dichotomy (Bartalesi 2012; Bartalesi, Consoli 2013; Desideri 2013 and 2018). An aesthetic attitude of sorts might also be present within the animal domain, and may have ultimately influenced human aesthetics. In other words, the question is whether human aesthetic standards may or not be the development or continuation of animal aesthetic preferences.

Research on The House of Mirth has mostly focused on a socio-psychological and feminist point of view. In this paper I will examine Wharton’s novel in terms of literary Darwinism, a field that combines socio-ideological studies as well as science, namely instinct.  It has easily been proven that Edith Wharton borrows from Charles Darwin and his theories on heredity, morality, and natural selection which all contribute to Lily Bart’s indecisiveness that drives the plot and eventually leads to her demise.

What is at the origin of aesthetic facts and stances that are typical to our species? Which role do emotions play in it? What is the ratio between aesthetic and cognitive dimension? in order to settle these questions, the author proposes an investigation that, moving from an analysis of emotions and by the issue of our ability to perceive images, defines the function of aesthetic schemes that are active since the early days of our infancy. The book’s core is thus devoted to the crucial theme of aesthetic pleasure, accounted both within the background framework of classic authors such as Aristotle and Kant and in dialogue with recent experimental analysis. On such basis, it is outlined an aesthetic mechanism that is specific to our mind, feeding on primary emotional devices and involving cognitive faculties of higher grade. Within the hypothesis of an aesthetic mechanism the author therefore grasps both the very matrix of human cognition and the prelude to language. Just as stated by the peculiar nature of aesthetic judgment, on whose analysis the volume ends. Through a clear and original path, we can therefore understand how at the origin of human’s symbolic mind there is an aesthetic mind.

Des études sur la beauté sont actuellement menées dans de multiples disciplines et explorent une pluralité de sujets traversant de nombreux débats contemporains. Ce domaine d’étude est toutefois encore peu institué en Europe. Ce séminaire souhaite donc fournir un espace de réflexion ouvert autour des enjeux socio-anthropologiques, politiques et thérapeutiques des pratiques corporelles à visée esthétique. Dans ce but, nous choisissons de donner la voix à des chercheur.e.s qui, à l’instar de figures telles que Ruth Holliday ou encore Kathy Davis, privilégient une vision compréhensive en s’appuyant, de préférence, sur de l’observation de terrain et du recueil de matériaux empiriques abondants relatifs aux phénomènes d’embellissement. Cette posture inductive de recherche permet, nous semble-t-il, de faire la lumière sur le sens psycho-socio anthropologique profond sous-jacent aux pratiques esthétiques. Dans cette perspective, il ne s'agit pas de poursuivre la tradition académique de dénonciation des pratiques esthétiques menée par certaines approches féministes. Ces dernières ont mis l’accent sur l’existence d’une industrie de la beauté au caractère oppressif, presque dictatorial, qui promouverait de fausses aspirations émancipatrices. Nombre de travaux envisagent en effet le travail esthétique comme une forme « d'esclavage » sournois, auquel seraient soumises les femmes dans les sociétés contemporaines.

Or, la compréhension des pratiques esthétiques et de la beauté nécessitent en réalité de les appréhender d’un point de vue multifocal car il s’agit d’un objet complexe.

L’archéologie semble nous confirmer que, depuis la préhistoire, les humains ont recours à des pratiques d’embellissement dont l’analyse se révèle être riche de symboles et de codes. Ceux-ci requièrent d’être étudiés afin de mieux les comprendre, non pas seulement sous les aspects de séduction, de compétition et de reproduction mais aussi pour leurs liens avec le bien-être, la socialité et la manière dont les individus habitent le monde. Pour Francesco Remotti3, il convient d’envisager la beauté pour sa valeur anthropo-poïétique et donc plutôt comme un «façonnement d’humanité ». L'esthétisation du corps peut être lue comme une forme d’expression particulière, qui se sert de codes et de signes indiquant l’inscription du sujet dans un système de valeurs propre au groupe social d’appartenance ou de référence. Le corps serait ainsi, grâce aux messages exprimés par l’apparence, un « relieur », selon les mots de David Le Breton1, un « pont » entre le sujet et son environnement. Le regard compréhensif adopté dans ce séminaire visera donc à saisir les significations socio-anthropologiques y compris au sens large liées aux symboles et aux pratiques esthétiques dans différents contextes socioculturels.

Les différentes séances (11 sont prévues à ce jour, s’étendant de février 2018 à mars 2019) visent à faire se rencontrer des chercheur.e.s et des « acteurs de terrain », dans les deux cas, des spécialistes dont l’esthétique est au coeur de leur profession ou de leurs centres d’intérêts. Les atouts résident dans le caractère international et itinérant de cet événement : les sessions ont lieu dans plusieurs villes en France et en Suisse (Paris, Rouen, Strasbourg, Lyon, Genève). Afin de décloisonner le débat, des rencontres seront occasionnellement organisées en dehors des cadres classiques de la recherche académique : dans des librairies, des musées, des centres sociaux, ou encore dans les locaux de partenaires privés.

Lors de nos rencontres, les supports visuels seront privilégiés : nous prévoyons la projection de documentaires ou de courtes vidéos à but pédagogique afin de nourrir les imaginaires et les débats. De plus, chaque séance du séminaire sera enregistrée et disponible gratuitement en podcast sur les plateformes des universités partenaires. Nous ouvrirons aussi un carnet de recherche Hypothèses spécialement dédié au champ des études sur les pratiques esthétiques. Ces supports pédagogiques virtuels garantiront une diffusion et une pérennisation des savoirs produits et mis en commun lors des différentes rencontres. Ils contribueront à visibiliser et formaliser, nous l’espérons, les études sur les pratiques esthétiques en France et en Europe.

Ce séminaire peut voir le jour grâce au soutien de plusieurs partenaires, universitaires et non universitaires. Güzellik tarih boyunca binlerce yıldır felsefecilerin tanımını bulmakta zorlandıkları bir konu olagelmiştir. “Güzel”in ne olduğu konusunda Plato’dan beri güzelliğin kişisel olabileceği veya kültürel olarak değişebileceği gibi pek çok farklı teoriler ortaya atılmış olmasına karşın, bunların hiç biri bilimsel, nesnel temellere dayanan teoriler olmamıştır. Charles Darwin (1809-1882)’in Evrim Teorisi, ölümünün üzerinden çok uzun bir zaman geçmesine rağmen psikoloji, antropoloji, sosyoloji gibi alanlarda pek çok yeni araştırma ve teoriye temel teşkil etmektedir. İnsanlığın milyonlarca yıl kullandığı kesici el baltaları, sürpriz bir şekilde evrim teorisinden dayanak alarak Denis Dutton* (1944-2010)’ın Evrimci Güzellik Teorisi’ne temel teşkil etmiştir. Güzelliğin cevabının nesnel olabileceği ve evrimsel süreçte genlerimize kodlanmış evrensel bir güzellik anlayışı olabileceği bilinen paradigmaları alt üst edebilecek bir yaklaşım olup, estetik, sanat ve eğitimde yepyeni çıkarımlara sebep olabilecektir.

Nessuno studioso votato alla verità scientifica può ormai seriamente mettere in dubbio l'oggettività delle leggi gestaltiche della percezione (olismo, pregnanza, stabilità, costanza, ecc.). Theodor Adorno denunciò ripetutamente le Gestalten come false integrazioni esperienziali, effetto e sintomo di una società anch'essa falsa, nonché illusoria riconcilia-zione di ordine storico e culturale; pochi - tuttavia - potrebbero seguire ancora le sue indicazioni. Le leggi che descrivono le strutture integrate e invarianti della percezione, com'è ben noto senza necessitare di ulteriore enfasi, rappresentano al contrario una delle massime acquisizioni della psicologia novecentesca. La loro importanza storica, poi, non è un mistero neppure oltre i confini della psicologia sperimentale. Parte niente af-fatto trascurabile dell'esperienza estetica del '900 sarebbe impensabile senza l'esplo-razione delle transizioni implicite tra elementi, della condensazione figurale, della conci-sione percettiva, di tutto ciò - in una formula - che rifiuta e supera il vecchio e stantio atomismo empiristico. L'oscura implicitezza che ne risulta porta spesso con sé qualcosa d'innegabilmente primitivo, che ci osserva con sguardo enigmatico e inquietante come le maschere africane di Picasso; ma questo aspetto verrà illuminato solo dalle conclusio-ni del presente lavoro. Ciò che è oggetto di controversia non è dunque la verità di queste leggi, ma la loro epistemologia. La psicologia della forma ha correttamente interpretato la realtà che percepiamo, ma ha altrettanto correttamente interpretato se stessa? Ovve-ro, nella sua autointerpretazione, non si è forse applicata i propri criteri percettivi? La teoria gestaltica, in altre parole, non diviene contemporaneamente per se stessa ogget-to gestaltico?

Darwin, Freud and the Naked Skin: Human beauty in an Evolutionary Perspective.

Abstract:

This paper is the result of a comparative research between three areas: evolutionary biology, sexual psychology and empirical and philosophical aesthetics. The main subject is the “naked skin” phenomenon as man’s first aesthetic ornament and its particular transfiguration process in “clothing culture”, considered in the light of the works of Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud.

El filósofo cínico, actor en el teatro del mundo.

Resumen: Cuando la filosofía deja de lado una búsqueda desinteresada del saber y se propone como meta encontrar los fundamentos de cierto tipo de vida, el método elegido por el filósofo para transmitir su mensaje debe ser eficaz y convincente. Los filósofos cínicos consideraron que la mejor manera de manifestar el rechazo de un tipo de vida y la preferencia por otro tipo de valores consistía en adoptar una actitud provocadora, insolente, desvergonzada, incluso impúdica. Este tipo de actuación suscita la curiosidad del eventual discípulo, que no puede dejar se interesarse en las causas de tal actitud. Actor en el teatro del mundo, el filósofo cínico eleva la provocación al rango de metodología filosófica. Diógenes, que entraba al teatro por la salida, fue un subversivo intelectual que fue envidiado incluso por los poderosos.

The Cynic Philosopher, an Actor on the Theater of the World.

Abstract:
In order to leave aside an unbiased search of knowledge and propose the criteria of a certain kind of life, a philosopher needs to convey his message through an effective and convincing method. Cynic philosophers considered the best manner to show the rejection of a certain way of life and at the same time the belief in a different set of values was to adopt a provocative, insolent, even shameless attitude. Their public performance forced curiosity among possible disciples, who were eager to learn the reasons of such displays. Actors in the theater of the world, Cynics raised provocation to the grade of philosophical methodology. For instance, Diogenes, who entered the theater through the exit door, was an intellectual rebel envied because of his independence even by powerful people.

El sentido fisiológico de la belleza: Mariano Barrenechea y la estética de Nietzsche.

Resumen: Este artículo tiene por objetivo general la profundización de nuestro conocimiento sobre la influencia nietzscheana en el pensamiento estético-musical de Mariano Antonio Barrenechea (1884-1949), mediante un análisis de sus desarrollos en torno al “valor biológico” de la belleza y a la naturaleza peculiar de lo “bello-musical”. Dicho análisis se ejecuta en tres momentos diferentes en su obra Historia estética de la música (1918). En primer lugar, la investigación se centra en el comienzo de la argumentación estética de Barrenechea, vertebrada a partir de un fragmento póstumo de Nietzsche en el que se fundamenta la necesidad de superar una estética meramente receptiva o “femenina”. Como segunda instancia del análisis, la investigación se detiene en la “reducción de los juicios estéticos a postulados biológicos”, operada por Barrenechea en un intento por imitar la metodología nietzscheana desplegada en el tercer libro de Der Wille zur Macht, “La voluntad de poder como arte”. Finalmente, el tercer momento del análisis corresponde a una puesta en paralelo de las conclusiones de Barrenechea acerca del sentido fisiológico de la belleza con las nociones nietzscheanas de “transfiguración” y “afirmación”. En el transcurso del trabajo cobran relieve no sólo las presencias de Nietzsche, unas veces manifiestas y otras un tanto eclipsadas, sino también las ausencias, es decir, la omisión probablemente deliberada de determinados conceptos.

The Physiological Sense of Beauty: Mariano Barrenechea and Nitezsche’s Aesthetics.

Abstract: This paper’s general purpose is the deepening of our knowledge on the Nietzschean influence over the aesthetic and musical thought of Mariano Antonio Barrenechea (1884-1949), through an analysis of his developments on beauty’s “biological value” and the singular nature of the “beautiful in music”. This analysis is executed in three different phases in his work Historia estética de la música (1918). First, the research focuses on the beginning of Barrenechea’s aesthetic reasoning, built over a Nietzsche’s posthumous fragment in which the philosopher supports the necessity of overcome a merely receptive or “feminine” aesthetics. Second, the research takes care of the “reduction of aesthetic judgments to biological premises”, conducted by Barrenechea in an attempt to follow the Nietzschean methodology displayed in Der Wille zur Macht’s third book, “Will to power as art”. Finally, the third phase of the analysis is about comparing Barrenechea’s conclusions about the physiological sense of beauty with Nietzschean notions of “transfiguration” and “affirmation”. In the course of this analysis, not only the presence of Nietzsche, sometimes visible and other times rather eclipsed, but also his absence, i.e. the probably willful omission of certain concepts, gain attention.

Catálogos decadentes: de la biopolítica al dispositivo estético.

Resumen: El presente artículo, que incluye imágenes de colecciones científicas, criminológicos y artísticas finiseculares, intenta interrogar la figura de la colección. El catálogo, una de las formas más recurridas del archivo biopolítico finisecular, es también uno de los procedimientos centrales de la literatura fin-de-siècle: À rebours (1884) de J.-K. Huysmans, Monsieur de Phocas (1901) de Jean Lorrain, Le chercheur de tares (1898) de Catulle Mendès pueden de hecho ser leídos como colecciones de rarezas y deformidades. Ahora bien, hace ya algunas décadas que el discurso crítico y teórico vuelve sobre el corpus de la décadence, en un acercamiento que parece desbordar el simple interés historiográfico. La puesta en serie, la deformación del lenguaje, la lectura de la modernidad como antinaturaleza, la relación entre crítica y clínica, tópicos tales como el despedazamiento o la artificialidad del cuerpo, son elementos que encuentran, tanto en la crítica como en el arte y la literatura contemporánea, una obvia resonancia. Esta relectura del fin-de-siècle puede entenderse, pues, como una arqueología que la reflexión crítica hace sobre sí misma para comprender sus propias condiciones de enunciación. Para hablar de la décadence, la crítica construye nuevas colecciones de aberraciones, como si la décadence obligara a los discursos a proponer sus propias series: el objeto de las páginas que siguen es interrogar esa persistencia de la serialidad decadente.

Decadent Catalogs: From Biopolitics to Aesthetical Device.

Abstract: The aim of this paper, which includes imagery taken from scientific, criminological and artistic catalogs, is to examine the notion of collection. The catalogue, one of the most extended forms of the biopolitical fin-de-siècle archive, is also a central device in fin-de-siècle literature: À Rebours (1884) by  J.-K. Huysmans, Monsieur de Phocas (1901) by Jean Lorrain, Le chercheur de tares (1898 ) by Catulle Mendès, may in fact be read as collections of oddities and deformities. These last decades, critical and theoretical discourse has reexamined the corpus of the décadence, in an approach that is no longer exclusively driven by historiographical interest. Serialization, deformation of language, readings of modernity as anti-nature, associations between « critic » and « clinic », topics such as disintegration or artificiality of the body, are elements that have an obvious resonance in contemporary criticism, art and literature. This reinterpretation of the fin-de-siècle can thus be understood as an archeology that critical reflection formulates to understand its own conditions of enunciation. To speak of décadence, criticism proposes new collections of aberrations, as if décadence forced critical discourse to propose its own series : the following pages interrogate the persistence of this decadent seriality

Come avevano intuito Benjamin e Adorno fin dagli anni Trenta, e come hanno evidenziato numerose ricerche condotte negli ultimi decenni,  i mezzi di registrazione e di riproduzione tecnica della musica hanno contribuito non soltanto ad potenziare la sua diffusione ma ne hanno profondamente trasformato i modi di essere, rivoluzionando i nostri modi di farne esperienza. Al moltiplicarsi di dispositivi e supporti di vario genere (dal disco alla cassetta, dal Compact disc al DVD), è subentrata, con il nuovo millennio, una via di accesso più immediata ed economica: quella dell’ascolto e della visione in streaming (on demand e live) di un sempre più vasto patrimonio musicale disponibile in rete (in svariati formati file come Real Audio, Real Video, Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video, QuickTime, Adobe Flash Video, ecc.). Quali sono le conseguenze — sul piano estetico, sociale e metafisico — dell’utilizzo sempre più frequente e generalizzato di queste nuove interfacce? In che modo il diffondersi dello streaming ha modificato la nostra esperienza delle opere del presente e del passato, ma anche di tradizioni o pratiche musicali fondate sull’improvvisazione?
In questo numero di Aisthesis, questi interrogativi sono stati articolati facendo riferimento ad alcuni aspetti di maggiore rilievo e in particolare:
1) le nuove possibilità di produzione e diffusione istantanea della musica a livello mondiale;
2) il cambiamento di funzione e le flessioni di significato di numerosi  fenomeni musicali in relazione ai nuovi modi di ricezione;
3) il formarsi e l’incrociarsi di nuovi criteri estetici, spesso associati a forme di vita non dipendenti da contesti geografici e fondate invece su specifiche reti sociali legate all’uso dello strumento informatico;
4) la tendenza a reintegrare nelle forme prevalenti di ricezione del fenomeno musicale una dimensione visiva, spesso (anche se non esclusivamente) legata al momento performativo;
5) il ripensamento dell’esperienza musicale “live” e la genesi di nuove pratiche creative;
6) le problematiche giuridiche e ontologiche relative alla proprietà dei prodotti artistici disponibili alla fruizione in streaming.

Consideriamo il rinnovamento dell'orizzonte epistemologico dovuto alla possibilità di una naturalizzazione del sapere umanistico. Come si sta trasformando l'estetica filosofica in rapporto a discipline quali le scienze cognitive, la biologia evoluzionista, le neuroscienze? Ammesso che si possa parlare di una vera e propria trasformazione, essa assomiglia a un movimento di ritorno nella direzione di un recupero dell'aisthesis, nucleo antico della riflessione greca sul sentire e il percepire. Il principale effetto positivo di tale ritorno è la tematizzazione diretta di un ambito problematico dell'esperienza umana e l'abbandono, tanto auspicato da Emilio Garroni, di un'idea puramente specialistica e disciplinare dell'estetica. Il dialogo con le scienze cognitive, l'antropologia evoluzionistica e le neuroscienze ha in questo senso un effetto benefico di ringiovanimento per l'estetica filosofica che torna ad essere una più estesa interrogazione sulla possibilità stessa di un'esperienza in generale. La sintesi tra l'attuale naturalizzazione del sapere umanistico e l'originaria natura dell'interrogazione sull'aisthesis ricolloca i fatti estetici nel registro comportamentale e cognitivo umano con l'effetto di sottrarli tanto a una loro marginalizzazione a dimensione idiosincratica, puramente affettiva, dell'agire umano quanto ad una loro risoluzione in un discorso critico sulle arti.

Human aesthetic preferences towards a certain landscape type, a certain bodily traits of the opposite sex, a figurative style rather than another, are embedded in what we call “aesthetic experience”, a complex network of instinctive reactions, emotions, feelings, thoughts, and judgements. Are these preferences universal and species-specific, that is to say are they the same for every member of a particular species? Evolutionary psychologists advocate the universality and species-specificity of the aesthetic preferences. Going back to Darwin's writings, in particular to his Notebooks, Bartalesi and Portera attempt to provide an alternative explanation for the emergence and development of human aesthetic preferences, beyond the dichotomy of nature and culture.

Can we properly define and explain the human mind an aesthetic mind? The purpose of the paper is to answer this and the related questions that it implies. How do we understand the conceptual field of the aesthetic? What do we mean when we speak about an aesthetic experience or when we express an aesthetic judgement? The first move consists in shaping the outlines of the «aesthetic» as a cluster-concept. Having identified the conceptual core of aesthetic as an expressive synthesis between the emotional and cognitive layers of the experience, I try to develop a theoretical paradigm consistent with it and, consequentially, a mental mechanism of the aesthetic. The next step consists, therefore, in replacing the causal monism involved in the adaptationist paradigm by a plurality of factors. Consequently, I claim that at the origin of the aesthetic mechanism there are four factors. These factors are: 1) the mimetic assimilation of the real; 2) the "seeking" or the pleasure of exploration; 3) the pleasure of exercising preferences as a degree of freedom and an advantage in the conduct of life; 4) the impulse to play (the intra specific and cooperative practice of learning through the exercise and the simulation reinforced by the pleasure). All these factors are dispositions rooted in the system of primary emotions and represent the preconditions for the epigenetic emergence of the aesthetic mechanism. Conclusively, this mechanism is considered a dynamic activity of the brain that integrates into a single space of mutual resonance and harmonization neocortical and subcortical neural circuits: aspects of mental life emotionally attuned and aspects that are specific of cognitive processing of information.

Are there any theoretical resources – conceptual, lexical or argumentative ones – in the interdisciplinary debate on the evolutionary origins of the arts that can help us go beyond the traditional autonomistic conception of art, in favour of a more continuist and inclusive interpretation of human artistic practices?
The paper examines the different voices in the debate, against the background of a cultural naturalist attitude inspired by John Dewey, by focusing on those contributions which can be interpreted in non-reductionist, anti-foundationalist and pluralistic terms.
What are particularly valuable are those positions emphasizing the phatic, communicative dimension of artifying behaviours in connection with the acute structural exposure of human organisms to their natural and naturally social environment.

The introductory pages of this contribution deal with one of the main discussions in the field of media studies with a possible impact on an aesthetic interpretation of filmed opera: the opposition between spectacle and narration as described by Andrew Darley. In opposition to Darley’s theory, or its possible application to filmed opera, I posit the hypothesis that the increased visibility of the actions and gestures in filmed opera enhances the audience’s attention to the narrative as one of the salient features of its aesthetic experience. The main section of this article will examine some findings in the fields of cognitive aesthetics and neurosciences as a support for a deeper understanding of the hypothesis proposed above.

We dispose all too easily of the efforts of the schoolmen to interpret nature and mind in terms of real essences, hidden forms, and occult faculties, forgetful of the seriousness and dignity of the ideas that lay behind. We dispose of them by laughing at the famous gentleman who acconted for the fact that opium put people to sleep on the ground it had a dormitive faculty. But the doctrine, held in our own day, that knowledge of the plant that yields the poppy, consists in referring the peculiarities of an individual to a type, to a universal form, a doctrine so firmly established that any other method of knowing was concived to be unphilosophical and unscientific, is a survival of precisely the same logic.

Descartes’ın deyimiyle düşündüğünün üstüne düşünebilen ilk insan türü olan Homo sapiensler, kendinden önceki primatların aksine seslere, dile, iletişime daha çok önem verdi. Homo sapiens, hayatta kalmayı başarmak noktasında diğer primatlardan daha başarılı idi. Peki, Sapiens’i üreme ve kendi neslini devam ettirmek noktasında bu kadar güçlü ve seçkin yapan şey neydi?

In spite of the great number of publications, contemporary evolutionary aesthetics seems to have reached deadlock, for the lack of a real epistemological reflection on the theoretical nucleus of its own experimental investigations. Starting from an introduction to the current debate, the essay aims to indicate the basic points of a theoretical model able to face speculative risks and methodological complexities of contemporary evolutionary aesthetics. In this very perspective is placed the analysis of Darwin’s sexual paradigm, and the hypothesis of partially revising it in order to extend the notion of aesthetics as an expressive and intrinsically motivated dimension of animal cognition.

L'articolo si pone l'obiettivo di rivisitare gli interrogativi kantiani sull'estetica alla luce delle più recenti acquisizioni nell'ambito della psicologia evoluzionistica, attraverso uno stretto confronto tra le pagine della terza Critica e le ricerche portate avanti da numerosi studiosi contemporanei, tra i quali Denis Dutton, Ellen Dissanayake e Geoffrey Miller. Se con Kant viene postulata l'esistenza di un senso comune estetico, correlato emotivo-concettuale che consente di provare la validità universale dei giudizi estetici sul bello e sulla produzione artistica del genio, numerosi sono gli argomenti sostenuti dagli evoluzionisti a sostegno di un'interpretazione biologica dell'attività creativa per eccellenza. Non solo l'arte è ancora utilizzata infatti, in particolare sotto forma di utilizzo di ornamenti corporei, con fini riproduttivi in molte culture contemporanee, come quella dei Wodaabe nel centro Africa, ma esistono tratti genetici trans-culturali che predispongono le capacità adattative delle strutture cerebrali, quando esposte a diversi contesti culturali, e che consentono di parlare dell'arte come di un istinto, tipicamente maschile, fondato sulla selezione sessuale. In questa prospettiva l'arte si presenta con una veste utilitaristica, che permette di inscriverla in un quadro di continuità filogenetica, ma che poco si lega all'intuizione romantica di immersione in un universo ateleologico. Ciò nonostante, la visione realistica dell'esistenza di un concetto di bello interessato, accanto a quella di bello privo di scopi, sembra poter fungere da trait-d'union tra il pensiero del filosofo tedesco e le tendenze contemporanee dell'estetica. Ontogenetics and Phylogenetics of the Artistic Instinct -Can we talk about art in terms of biological evolution? This article aims to revisits Kantian approaches to aesthetics in light of recent developments in the field of evolutionary psychology by providing a comparative analysis of Kant's third Critique and the research of a number of contemporary scholars, including Denis Dutton, Ellen Dissanayake and Geoffrey Miller. Kant postulates the existence of a common aesthetic sense, a conceptual-emotional correlate that in his view provides proof for the universal validity of aesthetic judgments, while these researchers put forward several arguments that support a biological interpretation of art as the creative activity par excellence. In fact, art not only continues to be used for reproductive purposes in many contemporary cultures, like that of the Wodaabe in Central Africa, but there also appear to be genetic traits that predispose us to cross-cultural adaptations, when we are exposed to other cultural contexts. This may allow us to speak about art as a typically masculine instinct, driven by sexual selection. From this perspective, art can be considered to perform a utilitarian function, and we can approach it using a phylogenetic continuity framework. However, such a conceptualization stands in stark contrast to the Romantic intuition of an a-teleological universe. By juxtaposing the realist view of art as evolutionarily motivated, to that of art as purposeless beauty, I reveal a link between the German philosopher and contemporary aesthetic trends.

Pero que es el ADN mitocondrial? Nuestras células sexuales (gametos) tienen 23 cromosomas en sus núcleos (la mitad del resto de las células del cuerpo). El producirse la unión de óvulo y espermatozoide, se produce la meiosis, en la cual, la información de los 23 pares de cromosomas (padre y madre) se recombinan a nivel nuclear solamente. Pero existe además del ADN nuclear, un ADN mitocondrial (un bolsa dentro del citoplasma de las células), el cual durante la concepción, desaparece el del padre, pero persiste el ADN mitocondrial de la madre. El ADN mitocondrial es útil para el estudio evolutivo, en primer lugar, porque su variabilidad depende exclusivamente de las mutaciones, ya que no sufre el ya mencionado proceso de recombinación durante la concepción. En segundo lugar, permite un seguimiento de la línea materna evolutiva, pero solamente se podría estudiar en zonas que se saben estuvieron habitadas por mujeres, por lo que podría traer fallas, en caso de que la población femenina fuera mayor a la masculina. Aquellas regiones donde el ADN presenta mayor variabilidad, significaran que allí se han producido mayores mutaciones en el tiempo, por tanto serán más antiguas, rastreándose así nuestra posible zona de origen. El número de genes en el ADN mitocondrial es de 37, frente a los 20.000 -25.000 genes del ADN cromosómico nuclear humano. Recapitulando un poco este complicado tema, la herencia mitocondrial es matrilineal, es decir, el ADN mitocondrial se hereda solo por vía materna. Tradicionalmente se ha considerado que cuando un espermatozoide (célula reproductora masculina) fecunda un óvulo (célula reproductora femenina) se desprende de su cola y de todo su material celular, excepto del núcleo que contiene el ADN nuclear, con lo cual en el desarrollo del cigoto sólo intervendrán las mitocondrias contenidas en el óvulo. Sin embargo, actualmente se ha demostrado que las mitocondrias del espermatozoide pueden penetrar en el óvulo, pero no llegan a heredarse al ser marcadas por ubiquitinación y degradadas. Otra característica importante del ADN mitocondrial, ya mencionada, es que no se recombina. Ello implica que los únicos cambios que haya podido haber en el ADN mitocondrial se deben exclusivamente a mutaciones a lo largo de multitud de generaciones. Los cálculos estadísticos que se han realizado informan que, en los mamíferos y en concreto en el hombre, cada 10.000 años aproximadamente surge una mutación en una de las bases del ADN mitocondrial (esto no es del todo cierto, aunque sí lo es para el fragmento que más mutaciones sufre, que consta de unos 500 pares de bases). Es decir, la diferencia entre una mujer que hubiera nacido hace 40.000 años y un descendiente directo por vía materna que viviera en la actualidad sería por término medio de 4 bases. De hecho, un estudio realizado en los ADN mitocondriales de los europeos (Bryan Sykes) asegura que todos los europeos provienen de siete mujeres, las siete hijas de Eva. La más antigua habría vivido hace 45.000 años y la más moderna hace unos 15.000 años. La Eva mitocondrial, la antepasada común más moderna de todos los seres humanos que hay en el mundo, se remontaría de este modo a unos 150.000 años a 200.000 años. Podemos resumir los resultados de estos estudios en dos puntos, primero, se ha confirmado la existencia de dos grandes grupos en cuanto al parecido del ADN mitocondrial. Uno de estos ADN es de origen africano solo, el otro grupo de ADN es el del resto de procedencias del que los Homo emigraron de África. El segunda resultado es la variabilidad dentro de cada uno de estos dos grupos, donde el ADN africano presenta más variaciones respecto al ADN del resto del mundo. Eva mitocondrial habría sido una mujer africana, que según la teoría genetista, correspondería en la evolución humana al ancestro femenino que poseía las mitocondrias del cual descienden todas los mitocondrias de la población humana actual. Por ello, si seguimos la línea genealógica por vía materna de cada persona en el árbol genealógico de toda la humanidad, Eva mitocondrial correspondería a un único antepasado femenino de la que diverge toda la población actual de Homo sapiens (seres humanos). Basándose en la técnica de Reloj molecular (molecular clock en inglés), los investigadores creen que Eva vivió aproximadamente hace 150.000 años o como máximo 200.000 años. Una comparación del ADN mitocondrial de distintas etnias de diferentes regiones, sugiere que todas las secuencias de este ADN tienen envoltura molecular en una secuencia ancestral común. Asumiendo que este se obtiene sólo de la madre, estos hallazgos implicarían que todos los humanos vivos descienden en última instancia de una mujer, sin descartar absolutamente la posibilidad de que ella haya podido ser una hembra prehumana. Sabemos de Eva a causa de las mitocondrias (un orgánulo celular) que sólo se pasan de la madre a la prole. Cada mitocondria contiene ADN mitocondrial y la comparación de las secuencias de este ADN revela una filogenia molecular. La Eva mitocondrial recibe su nombre de la Eva que se relata en el libro del génesis de la Biblia. Esto ha llevado a algunos malentendidos entre el público general. Un error común es creer que Eva fue el único ancestro femenino viviendo en su tiempo. Es muy probable que muchas mujeres anteriores a Eva y también muchas pertenecientes a aquella época, hayan tenido descendencia hasta cierto momento en el pasado. Sin embargo, solo la Eva mitocondrial produjo una línea completa de hijas mujeres hasta nuestros tiempos; por lo cual es el ancestro femenino del cual proviene toda la población actual. El fundamento del linaje de la Eva mitocondrial, es que al revisar el árbol genealógico de todos los seres humanos que viven en la actualidad (a través de la genética), si se sigue una línea de cada individuo a su madre, y si estas líneas se continúan desde cada una de esas madres a sus respectivas madres, se estará retrocediendo en el tiempo y todas las líneas convergerán en un punto en que todas las hijas comparten la misma madre. En este seguimiento, cuanto más se retroceda en el tiempo, menos linajes quedarán hasta que quede solo uno; el cual correspondería a la Eva mitocondrial.

«It is fair to say that Alison was not among the most famous of the Enlightenment thinkers» (Friday [2004]: 185): un'affermazione che potrebbe essere riconiugata al presente senza troppi rischi di smentita. Certo non giovò al pensatore scozzese che i suoi Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste uscissero nello stesso anno (1790) in cui Immanuel Kant pubblicava la sua terza Critica, ma bisogna ammettere che neppure in patria egli godette e gode di grande popolarità 3 , come testimonia la non certo vasta bibliografia a lui riferibile 4 . La recente edizione italiana dell'opera (Alison [2011]), promossa da Luigi Russo e curata da Simona Chiodo, ha posto tuttavia le premesse per una riconsiderazione di questo autore, e un seminario organizzato dallo stesso Russo a Palermo (4--5 ottobre 2013) 5 ha avviato un coinvolgente dibattito sulla sua attualità. Quest'ultima viene fatta consistere principalmente nella nozione di emozione che -centrale nell'estetica di Alison -appare oggi una componente privile-giata della cosiddetta «neoestetica» (Russo [2011]
