In un'epoca in cui le lingue sembrano impoverirsi sotto la pressione dell'inglese globale e dell'intelligenza artificiale, l'italiano in Svizzera si trova a un bivio: sopravvivere come reliquia identitaria o rinascere come risorsa culturale. È questo il cuore del dibattito che ha animato l'incontro "Italiano in Svizzera: fino a quando sarà ancora una risorsa culturale e identitaria", tenutosi alla Biblioteca cantonale di Locarno, promosso dal Forum per l'italiano in Svizzera. Tra le voci più lucide e appassionate, quella di Lorenzo Tomasin, professore di Filologia romanza all'Università di Losanna e socio ordinario dell'Accademia della Crusca. Tomasin non si limita a difendere l'italiano: lo colloca al centro di una riflessione più ampia sul plurilinguismo, sull'identità svizzera e sulle sfide del nostro tempo. «Il plurilinguismo non è un lusso, non è un orpello, non è un elemento accessorio della società svizzera… è un punto fondamentale senza il quale la Svizzera non esiste», afferma.

This study investigates how ecological ideas can be translated into language and translation depending on the interrelation between linguistic and cultural systems. The aim is to investigate how metaphoric eco-translation and ecolinguistics help in comprehending the complexity of translation and language sustainability. The study concerns the metaphorical extension of ecological principles such as adaptation, selection, and survival to translation and Haugenian ecolinguistics that theorizes languages as dynamic beings crafted by social, cultural, and political environments. By adopting the narrative review approach, the current research incorporates theory and literature from authors including Michael Cronin, Gengshen Hu, and Einar Haugen to analyze how translation contributes to linguistic diversity, languageenvironment relations, and parallelism between linguistic and ecological systems. The results indicate that metaphoric ecology provides understanding on minority language maintenance, linguistic diversity, and intercultural communication by means of translation. While metaphorical in essence, these approaches also have implications for ecological challenges. As an initial intersection between natural science and humanities, metaphoric ecology emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches in tackling contemporary issues of language and cultural sustainability.

This study advocates for the integration of literary theory into Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in order to overcome the limitations of conventional communicative approaches, which privilege transactional language proficiency over critical reading of texts. Proposing the Critical Literary-Awareness Pedagogy (CLAP), the study calls for a revamped curriculum that incorporates genre studies, stylistics, and critical discourse analysis (CDA) to enhance learners' linguistic, analytical, and intercultural competencies. Drawn from a comparative case study of TEFL programs in Germany, Japan, and Mexico, the study applies mixed methods including syllabus analysis, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires to determine how literary theory constructs critical literacy and genre mobility. The results indicate that pedagogical frameworks incorporating textual deconstruction, creative production, and sociopolitical critique.

Due to its transversal perspective, crossing other sub disciplines, ecolinguistics
provide a theoretical frame that allows including analytical tools from different
nature. Ecolinguistics makes possible to think language as a better contextualised
phenomena, considering a broad spectrum of implications that not only includes the
enunciation context and linguistic resources. This wide range of possibilities is what
makes ecolinguistics a relevant and growing field in the second decade of the
21th century. As Chomskyan and Saussurean perspectives on language are getting
out-dated (Perniss 2018), the need for a bigger vision about language pushes the
boundaries of linguistics towards new scientific paradigms in the context of the
anthropocene deconstruction (Haraway 2016).
The relevance of ecolinguistics as a cur

The purpose of the article is to reinterpret the content and historical context of the inscription MVΗVΛV available in the medieval Tuscan epigraphic material. The structure of military-political and cultural contacts of Tuscany in the VIII – 1st half of the XII century, as well as a number of objections related to the Michaelic interpretation, makes it possible to reinterpret the inscription MVΗVΛV based on the Quranic substrate: as a transmission through the Latin graphics of the Quranic exclamation mā šāʾ Allāh. The inscription MVΗVΛV, as well as monuments of Islamic Arabographic epigraphy of the X–XII centuries, embedded in the urban space of Christian Pisa, acquired in this connotation an ideological, apotropaic and invocative meaning.

Greta Thunberg became a beacon of hope for many in the face of climate change. While journalists and social scientists attempt to know her influence through quantification popularized as the "Greta Effect, " we understand Thunberg through rhetorical fragments that compose a broader structure of feelings in the public-what we call the "Greta Affect. " Moving from effect to affect, we look to how Thunberg as a "leader of our time" inspires rhetorical leadership grounded in appeals of innocence. Through a rhetorical analysis of a popular mode of response to Thunberg's speeches, the meme, we investigate how comparisons of Thunberg to another popular culture figure, Lisa Simpson, invite a wider manner of engagement tied to a figure of the girl as publics converge around different investments in youth appeals to innocence. G reta Thunberg, the activist teen, was suddenly a salient presence. In a March 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Thunberg explained she drew inspiration from the student-led strikes following the student activism in the Parkland mass shooting. 1 She found it particularly inspiring

This study investigates the use of environmental metaphors in shaping public perception and enhancing engagement with ecological issues in Pakistani media. Metaphors play a critical role in framing complex environmental concepts in relatable ways, yet limited research has been conducted in the context of Pakistani English newspapers (Hussain et al., 2025). Using a qualitative approach, the researcher analyzed environmental news articles from five major newspapers including Dawn, The Express Tribune, The News International, The Nation, and Pakistan Observer and collected data systematically throughout 2024. Data were thematically arranged into ten categories, and Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) and Ecolinguistic Analysis were applied to uncover cognitive and cultural frames. The researcher found that crisis-driven metaphors effectively highlight urgency, while optimistic metaphors inspire hope and action, creating a balanced narrative. These metaphors enhance readability and engagement by making abstract ecological issues tangible and emotionally resonant, appealing to a wide range of audiences. The study concludes that environmental metaphors are essential for fostering public awareness, empathy, and sustainable behaviors. It is recommended that journalists undergo training in ecolinguistic techniques to better employ metaphorical framing, while media Remittances Review.

Giant soft-shelled turtle has been observed and several specimens collected in different sites on the Song Hong (Red River), Song Ma (Ma River) and Song Da (Da River) in Northern Vietnam. Morphological comparison of the specimens revealed that the skulls are different to that of Rafetus swinhoei described before by having a wide and blunt outer appearance. Samples from skeletons and remains were collected from all specimens. One tissue sample of Rafetus swinhoei (GRAY, 1873) was provided by the Naturhistorischem Museum Wien, Austria. Fragments of mitochondrial cytochome B, NADH4 and 16S rRNA genes were cloned and sequenced. No registered nucleotide sequences were found to be similar. Phylogenetic analysis showed the described turtle to form a unique group which is close to Rafetus euphraticus and R. swinhoei. Combined with morphological comparison of the specimens as well as with the distribution records, it is possible to conclude that the giant freshwater soft-shelled turtle of Vietnam is a new species that has not been previously taxonomically identified. Therefore, the new species is named as Rafetus vietnamensis.

Life on Land In the edited volume Language as an Ecological Phenomenon, Steffensen, Cowley, and Döring present an interdisciplinary exploration of language as an active agent in ecological systems. They bring together a series of essays that highlight the interplay between language and ecology, conceptualizing “languaging” as a multi-layered activity woven into ecosystems. This volume also contributes significantly to environmental communication (EC) by exploring how linguistic practices shape ecological interactions, as well as narratives, and discourses about them. This review will assess how the book’s contributions resonate with ongoing discussions in EC, linking linguistic analysis with the broader goals of EC to foster sustainability and ecological awareness.

Noun-to-verb conversion, also known as verbing nouns, has been a topic of interest in linguistic research for several decades. Previous studies have attempted to understand the mechanism of this phenomenon, but these studies have mainly focused on verbs and not the semantic structure of nouns. Therefore, I propose to analyze the phenomenon by applying ecological semantics, a theoretical framework that considers the objects' usability or affordances as the ecological meaning detected through language. This study focuses on a bundle of affordances detected by nouns, which can provide insights into why certain nouns can have metaphorical meaning when converted into verbs, and others cannot. Thus, this paper provides a new perspective on studying noun-to-verb conversion that can contribute to a deeper understanding of the phenomenon.

Olga Tokarczuk’s "Primeval and Other Times"  – Cultural and Ecological Linguistics Perspectives
Taking recourse to such concepts of cultural and ecological linguistics as the linguistic picture of the world, mental maps, stereotypes and linguistic ecosystem the article tries to reinterpret Olga Tokarczuk’s Primeval and Other Times. Our analysis demonstrates that the Nobel prize winning writer has constituted a  historical, cultural, and social portrait of a  part of Central Europe called “provincial Poland.” This cultural construction is composed of a  system of truths and myths, as well as fictitious imaginings. These are mental cliches which still actively influence cultural and social behaviour in this part of the world. Ecological linguistics helped to identify ways in which Tokarczuk, assuming a  proecological attitude, deconstructs the tradition of anthroponormative thinking.

Bangladesh faced several alarming consequences of climate change, with frequent occurrences of floods, droughts, heatwaves, cyclones, and other natural disasters. To mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, it is important to make young learners eco-conscious and include eco-friendly content in textbooks. Thus, the present research aimed to conduct an eco-critical discourse analysis of the grade five EFL textbook taught in Bangladesh. The qualitative study incorporated the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model by Fairclough (2013) and the framework of ecolinguistics by Stibbe (2015) as its theoretical underpinnings. The study’s findings revealed that the discourses of the textbook were significantly ambivalent, only partially addressing the ecosophy of the analyst.

On the one side of the language studies, we have linguists who support the practical and theoretical autonomy of language and linguistics and argue that “linguistics must attempt to grasp language, not as a conglomerate of non-linguistic (e.g., physical, physio-logical, psychological, logical, sociological) phenomena, but as a self-sufficient totality, a structure sui generis” (Hjelmslev, 1961, 5-6). On the other side, there are researchers who declare that ‘‘linguistics does not need to postulate the existence of languages as part of its theoretical apparatus’’ (Harris, 2003, 46) or “if you want to learn about language, forget about language!” (Steffensen 2011, 204). By resorting to the methodology of fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets, ideas of Greek and Eastern philosophy, the research suggests moving away from theoretical binarisation and exploring gradients between extreme positions (autonomous vs heteronomous, universal vs situated, real vs constructed). First of all, the article extends further the ideas of Harris and Steffensen and introduces a new thesis: ‘if you want to lose the language, study it!’. Secondly, the research demonstrates the need for the practical and aesthetical acknowledgment of the reality of language (e.g., in education). To prove the first statement, the emptiness of theoretical efforts to find the entity of language, the research brings into play the ideas of fuzzy logic and critically revises realism, conceptualism and nominalism in language studies. The work provides evidences that neither ‘language’ nor ‘dialects’ or ‘idiolects’ can be found in practice due to the inherent fuzziness of the linguistic facts (systems) ‘described’ by these clear-cut categories. It is argued that theories and concepts designed for the description of the language-related phenomena are theoretical constructions that do not fully capture the stochastic and dynamic reality of language. Instead, they merely construct or declare it, similar to how we create star constellations (Steffensen and Fill, 2014). It resonates with the idea that can be found in Zen Buddhism and Taoism: “name it and you will lose it”. The research also holds that even if ‘language’ is an “ensemble of idiolects, sociolects, dialects and so on – rather than an entity per se” (Hazan, 2015, 11), we cannot find a token of its existence in either the entity or in the elements (ensemble) constituting that hypothetical entity. The article concludes that those researchers who focus on the particular nature of language lose its complexity; conversely, those who embrace all aspects (e.g., integrational approaches) lose its entity. However, if we are not able to grasp theoretically the reality of language does it mean it has no reality whatsoever and researchers and learners cannot have any positive knowledge about the language? The article offers some analogies in favour of the reality of language (comparison with music, road traffic, star constellations) and methods for its understanding based on intuition, metaphorical thinking and aesthetic comprehension. An example of such intuitive observation can be found in Japanese culture through such aesthetic categories as shibui 渋い, wabi-sabi 侘寂 and yūgen 幽玄. As a result, the article proposes the idea of sustainable ecolinguistics that includes in the body of integrational approaches the phronesis of common-sense realism in language teaching/learning and “unscientific impressionism in language studies” (quoted from Steffensen, 2011, 204).

Englisch gewinnt als internationale Wissenschaftssprache zunehmend an Bedeu- tung. Das Streben nach internationaler Verständlichkeit, die damit verbundene größere Leserschaft und höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit, rezipiert zu werden, lassen viele nicht ursprünglich anglophone Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaft- ler auf Englisch schreiben. Andere ziehen ihre Erstsprache vor, die ihnen einen höheren Grad an semantischer Präzision ermöglicht, den Wissenschaftstrans- fer im eigenen Land erleichtert und die Vielfalt an Schreibtraditionen aufrecht hält. Dabei sind die im Kontext der aktuellen Sprachenfrage vorgebrachten Argumente teilweise aus der Phase der Ablösung des Lateins durch die romani- schen Sprachen gut bekannt, teilweise aber auch unterschiedlich. Insbesondere erweist sich Latein im Vergleich zum Englischen als neutraler, da es seinerzeit für die gesamte Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft eine Zweitsprache und Erstsprache der Alphabetisierung darstellte, während Englisch nur die Erstsprache eines Teils der Forschenden ist, denen damit häufig ein Wettbewerbsvorteil zugespro- chen wird. Der Beitrag gilt der Frage, wie italienische Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler zum Englischen als Wissenschaftssprache stehen. Er analysiert ihre Haltung zur Notwendigkeit der Beigabe englischsprachiger Resümees und der kompletten Redaktion auf Englisch, zur Frage, ob eine eventuelle Meidung des Englischen eher in fehlenden Sprachkenntnissen oder in einem bewussten Festhalten an der eigenen Erstsprache begründet liegt, zur Rolle, die die Sprache bei der Auswahl zitierter Werke einnimmt, sowie zu Anglizismen? Im Ergebnis zeigen die Befragten kaum anglophobe Tendenzen, sondern eher pragmatische Einstellungen, die dem Englischen immer dann einen Platz einräumen, wenn es unter Abwägung aller relevanten Aspekte am sinnvollsten erscheint.

In 2019 Greta Thunberg gave a speech at the UN Climate Action Summit on climate change. The survey presented in this paper was conducted among students studying at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management (N = 99) in order to analyze their attitudes to this speech. The sample included students from Croatia as well as international students. Research questions covered the role of language, ecological awareness, age and education in the perception of the quality, the attractiveness of the speech, the use of ethos, pathos and logos, persuasiveness, and also influence potential. Generally, the results show statistically significant differences in perception and attitude between Croatian and international students.

Six matches from the tournament were recorded and transcribed. The commentaries were then analysed using Jeffries' Critical Stylistics Analysis toolkits called textual-conceptual functions. Though not prominent, the findings reveal traces of ideologies of representation of races and religion found in the commentaries only by using six out ten Jeffries’ textual-conceptual functions toolkits. The Tlingit and Tagish First Nation peoples of the circumpolar north celebrate a rich, sophisticated, 9,000 year old storytelling culture. The Tlingit and Tagish consider themselves "part of the land, part of the water," within which is the recognition and respect for the sentience of glaciers, rivers, lakes, trees, salmon and other animals. This paper focuses on glaciers within the context of the Anthropocene and other colonial terracentric histories maintained by the dominant mono-cultural imaginary. How might thinking with glaciers, powerful agents in the forging of human and more-than-human identities, work to address new types of climate change realities? Looking at decolonizing realities through place-name and counter-mapping work with Carcross/Tagish First Nation, we showcase and question the rhetoric of the Anthropocene. We suggest that the "slow activism" and "narrative ecologies" embedded within Tlingit and Tagish glacial narratives have the ability to disrupt increasingly entrenched notions and narrow definitions of the Anthropocene(s) that continue to reproduce this mono-cultural imaginary.

This contention is explored in the study that is further presented and discussed in the article. The study seeks to identify syntactic means, in particular dependent clauses, which are involved in the construction of Greta Thunberg’s community identity on Facebook. Greta Thunberg, a famous climate change activist from Sweden, has a public account on Facebook that is followed by a substantial number of Facebook users, who, presumably, share her views on climate change, sustainability, and other environmental issues. It is assumed in the study that Greta Thunberg’s status updates on her public Facebook account could be characterised by syntactic means that facilitate the construction of the climate activists’ community identity. In order to verify the assumption, a corpus of Greta Thunberg’s status updates on Facebook was collected and analysed by the software program L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (Lu 2010). The computer-assisted analysis was supplemented by a manual procedure of identifying the types of dependent clauses in the corpus. The results of the corpus analysis revealed that Greta Thunberg’s community construction on Facebook was facilitated by such syntactic means as dependent clauses, in particular non-finite, adverbial, and relative clauses. The findings were further discussed in the article through the lens of the construction of community identity. Conoscenza dell’inglese e padronanza piena della propria lingua non sono in conflitto. Il cervello umano consente di padroneggiare più lingue, il plurilinguismo è ricchezza. In ecologia e in agricoltura la monocoltura è dannosa. Anche nei rapporti tra i popoli e nelle relazioni internazionali il monolinguismo non paga. Al contrario delle apparenze, l’inglese da solo non basta. Il processo di globalizzazione richiede strategie adeguate, anche in linguistica.

Everyday metalinguistic ascriptions ("My name is Oliver", "Swahili ng'ombe means cow", "She lied about you") seemingly attribute properties to phenomena of a distinctively linguistic ontology. However, non-representational approaches to cognition, such as ecological psychology, cannot accommodate this linguistic ontology without contravening their nonrepresentational principles. An alternative might be to construe metalinguistic ascriptions as 'folk' fictions which are, strictly speaking, false. Yet this would render unintelligible the practical role that metalinguistic ascription occupies in everyday discourse. We suggest another alternative. By analogy to mindshaping approaches in folk-psychological debates, we propose a nonrepresentational account of metalinguistic ascription as a form of language-shaping. Metalinguistic ascriptions shape language behavior over temporal and social scales by prospectively shaping discursive niches.

A network of fossil fuel industry-led organizations, foundations, associations, and industry-funded politicians have challenged climate science, sown public doubt and confusion about climate science, and impeded effective climate policy action. This article offers an instructional model, the climate denial inquiry model (CDIM), to frame and guide work that literacy and social studies educators can do with students. Drawing from our own teaching over the past decade, this model is rooted in critical literacies and social studies education in ways that support teachers to engage students in four core practices: 1.) Identify two distinct types of climate denial that operate in texts: science denial and action denial; 2.) Investigate and understand how climate denial texts are shaped in and through contexts that promote or perpetuate climate denial; 3.) Examine individual and group ecological philosophies or ecosophies; and 4.) The paper examines the gender orientation of political discourse from a stylistic viewpoint. Gender markers contemporary English political discourse and the colloquial clichés that these markers form are analyzed. As politicians appear on the political stage, the verbalization of their political ideas is a new and promising oratorical experience. Therefore, the ways and means of analyzing the linguistic characteristics of politicians in terms of tenderness and benevolence seem to be a relevant and promising aspect of the study, given the linguistic and psychological features of intercultural communication.

The corpus-based study focuses on the use of hedges in persuasive TED Talk speeches, which are powerful, premeditated speeches delivered in a distinctive communicative environment that combines elements of both spoken and written discourse. The authors employ both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the hedging devices used to bolster the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. The results show that only 2% of the words in the corpus serve as hedging devices, which is lower compared to previous studies on written and spoken discourse. The incidence of hedges is highest in the logos parts, followed by pathos, with the lowest incidence in ethos. Strong credibility is generally established by avoiding hedging devices. To evoke emotions in the audience, the speakers mainly rely on adverbs and verbs. The use of approximators and shields to strengthen logos resembles the use of hedges in written academic discourse. Poetic texts of the ХХ - ХХІ centuries were primarily the source base because the language of poetry is the natural medium of metaphor. In poetry, the potential of metaphor is fully implemented. It conveys numerous shades of meaning, and semantic nuances, as well as the purpose of influencing the reader, stimulating his creative imagination, giving aesthetic pleasure, expanding the worldview, involving in co-creation, etc. Publicistic texts containing zoomorphic metaphors were also included in the analysis. Le district de Tonekābon, situé au sud de la mer Caspienne entre le Gilān et le Māzanderān même, est la patrie du tonekaboni, un groupe de langues caspiennes centrales auquel apartiennent également ses voisins immédiats : le ramsari et le kalarestaqi. Les variétés caspienne centrale présentent un faible degré de l’intelligibilité mutuelle avec le mazanderani ou le gilaki, en raison de différences importantes de la morphosyntaxe et du vocabulaire. Le présent article est structuré en trois sections. La première propose une description morphosyntaxique du tonekaboni, la seconde donne une typologie du tonekaboni au sein de la famille des langues caspiennes en conculant que le tonekaboni et le ramsari constituent deux dialectes d’une même langue, alors que la troisième section explore le contexte historique dans lequel le tonekaboni a évolué.

Climate change, like many other pressing issues in today's society, is being scrutinized by the linguistic community as well under the subcategory of Eco linguistics. In this context, the present study tries to illuminate this new field by critically or Eco linguistically analyzing Greta Thunberg’s most recent (selected) speech. In particular, by using the theoretical framework given by Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse model, the study analyzes the way how Greta draws on different linguistic devices or adopts highly selected use of language to convey an ecologically beneficial perspective and ideology. It also examines the use of figures of speech in her speech and it explores how the selection is made for conveying an ecologically beneficial perspective. The findings revealed her careful selection of vocabulary items, use of direct and dominant language, extensive use of metaphors, ironic expressions and lack of euphemistic expressions. In this work-in-progress, I consider the impacts of generative metaphor, metaphoring, and framing on student engineers' developing positioning relative to ecological issues in engineering. I consider how engineering, as a symbolic community, is impacted by metaphors and narratives that provide frameworks by which to understand engineering's relationship to the Earth and ecology. I consider the historical framing of engineering as a "socially captive" practice and consider challenges to that framing. Finally, I consider how knowledge and comprehension of metaphors and metaphoring can inform engineering education, and in particular students' ongoing interaction with ecologically-related metaphors that frame the agency they have access to in both their education and their future professional practice.

Eco-linguistic studies are influenced by one of the other interdisciplinary sciences, namely critical discourse analysis. The combination of these two sciences is called critical eco-linguistic studies. Critical eco-linguistic examines the discourse about the environment and various forms of discourse and their ideology which concerns people and the environment. The environmental discourse with all its manifestations (oral text, written text) is called green discourse. To that end, critical eco-linguistic dictates the linguistic aspects contained in the green discourse. Utilization of lingual units in green discourse will affect the sense and logic of people involved in the discourse, ie the writers and readers or the speakers and the speakers. It also examines the use of figures of speech in her speech and it explores how the selection is made for conveying an ecologically beneficial perspective. The findings revealed her careful selection of vocabulary items, use of direct and dominant language, extensive use of metaphors, ironic expressions and lack of euphemistic expressions. Besides that, her use of conjunctions adheres to coherence, her inductive style of argumentation focuses on reasoning. The findings showed the use of transitions throughout her speech between pessimistic and optimistic expressions. The result presented that her manipulation through the use of sensitive and emotionally triggered words have influenced people to a great deal to the point of shaping their distinct ideology regarding climate change and thus to pursue an agenda based on action. The study also provides implications to develop understanding of climate related discourses as it stresses the role which language or linguistics play in encouraging and influencing people to safeguard the systems that sustain life.

The aim of this communication was twofold. First, I was willing to share the results of my research on the ecological paradigm with people who had called themselves ecolinguists for the last twenty or thirty years and who had tried to establish an ecolinguistics theory. It was in a most convivial atmosphere that I was invited to explain the reasons why I undertook the work of doing the history of ecological approaches in linguistics, and to present the methodological particularities of my work which rest on the contemporariness of ecological trends and the use, incorporation of, and critical view on new technologies in doing so. I then presented some of the results of my research, including the multi-dimensional analysis of the so-called seminal article launched by linguist Einar Haugen in the 1970s (Haugen, 1971) which has been very instrumental in clarifying some of the contemporary ecological explorations of language and languages. I finally showed that these ecological trends are laying the foundations of a theoretical renewal in sociolinguistics and ethno/anthropological linguistics while arousing our interest for a thorough examination of biological background information in the study of linguistic evolution. Contemporary ecological frameworks based on empirical studies are thus regarded as epistemological and theoretical ushers in the areas of cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic typology, and Creole studies.

This study evaluated the importance of the study of intercultural communication as a social science. A systematic review, of a total of 17 publications, was conducted to achieve the specific aim of this study. This review provides compelling proof that the study of intercultural communication as a social science enhances the intercultural communicative competence and intercultural sensitivities required to cope in intercultural environments, utilizes empirical and theoretical knowledge to develop solutions to challenges in multicultural environments, encompasses the study of the historical and psychosocial roles of culture in different societies, and enhances the knowledge of students about the impacts and dynamics of multicultural and cross-cultural interfaces.

The plant community concept was first introduced by the Danish botanist Johannes Eugenius Bülow Warming (1841–1924) in his book “Plantesamfund” of 1895, where he suggested a general theory of explaining different geographical distributions of plants. The title “Plantesamfund” can be translated both as Plant societies and Plant communities, since the Danish word samfund means both “society” and “community” (or alternatively “Gesellschaft” and “Gemeinschaft” in German). To keep the broad meaning of the original title Warming chose the German title “Ökologischen Pflanzengeographie” (1896) and the English title “Oecology of Plants” (1909). The book addressed different factors limiting the geographical distribution of different plants.
