İsa'nın ve erken Hristiyanlığın sosyal, sınıfsal ve tarihsel kökenlerini sorgulayan bu çalışma, Hristiyanlığın yayılışını ezilen sınıfların (yoksullar, köleler, kadınlar) perspektifinden ele alarak, dinin Roma İmparatorluğu'ndaki "yeniden canlandırma" rolünü ve Soğuk Savaş dönemindeki ideolojik çarpıtmaları tartışmaktadır. Ana tezimiz, Hristiyanlığın bireysel değil, "grup yararına" inançlar sayesinde yayıldığı ve İsa'nın mesajının kolektivist bir dayanışma çağrısı olduğudur.
[This study examines the social, class, and historical roots of Jesus and early Christianity. It examines the spread of Christianity from the perspective of oppressed classes (the poor, slaves, women), discussing the religion's role in "revival" in the Roman Empire and the ideological distortions of the Cold War. Our main thesis is that Christianity spread through beliefs that served the "group," not the individual, and that Jesus' message was a call for collectivist solidarity.]

D e mais de uma forma, o volume agora apresentado, contendo o primeiro número da Oriente Cristão -Revista do Grupo de Estudos sobre História do Oriente Cristão, é a realização de um sonho -ou, melhor dizendo, de uma série de sonhos encadeados, alimentados pela reflexão e empenho dos membros de seu Conselho Editorial. Além disso, por um lado, ela é o ponto de chegada do trabalho que temos desenvolvido no Grupo de Estudos em História do Oriente Cristão (GEHOC). Por outro, espera-se que seja primeiro movimento de uma conversação que desejamos seja tão rica quanto duradoura. De modo imediato, o GEHOC foi gerado nos intervalos e conversas de corredor que emolduraram dois cursos oferecidos por este que agora aqui escreve, no primeiro semestre de 2019, no Centro Dom Vital do Rio de Janeiro. Um destes cursos teve como tema as reações e acomodações cristãs à conquista islâmica do Egito e as interações entre as comunidades cristãs e muçulmana nos dias que se seguiram a este empreendimento notável. O outro, sugerido pelos alunos do primeiro, pretendeu revisitar a ruptura entre as Igrejas de Roma e de Constantinopla que foi formalizada pelas mútuas excomunhões de 1054, inventariando e discutindo algumas de suas causas próximas e distantes, assim como suas interpretações e consequências. Como nos recuerda Teófilo Ruiz en su reciente libro sobre la sociedad española de los siglos XV y XVI "en España y el resto de Europa, la creencia religiosa, la observancia ritual y la inquietud respecto de la salvación y el más allá representaban un componente integral de la vida cotidiana del individuo". Paralelamente una expresión alemana, "el disciplinamiento social" resumiría en parte el fenómeno al que se asiste. En estos años, desde el segundo tercio del siglo XVI, contemplamos el fortalecimiento de la disciplina en el seno de las Iglesias, la consolidación de la "identidad confesional" a partir del principio "cuius regio, eius religio" acuñado en la paz de Augsburgo de 1555, que, a su vez, fue acompañado del desarrollo de un pensamiento político y filosófico. Todo ello contribuyó a una reforma social que permitió, a su vez, un fortalecimiento de las estructuras del Estado. Las confesiones religiosas desarrollaron doctrinas coherentes, rituales, reformaron su personal y sus instituciones, dirigieron sus miras a una reforma social en sus ámbitos territoriales, utilizando instrumentos similares (las visitas, publicaciones, educación…). Todas ellas jugaron un papel fundamental en el proceso de cambio en las estructuras religiosas, políticas, culturales y sociales [Lotz-Heumann, 2001, 97]. Mas ¿qué es lo que se pretende cambiar de la sociedad en la que se vivía? La respuesta es sencilla de expresar y no tanto de desarrollar: todo o casi todo. A una época de desorientación, de angustia, de deriva, de miedo al hambre, a la guerra, a la epidemia (De bello, de fame, de peste, libera nos Dómine) sigue otra 799 [1]

In der "Sattelzeit" der europäischen Moderne werden in Frankreich sowohl deutsche transzendentalidealistische Philosophie (Kant, Fichte, der frühe Schelling) als auch "realistische" Varianten ihrer Kritik (Reinhold, Jacobi) spätestens seit 1798 als Anstoß für eine Reform der durch Condillac geprägten sensualistischen Denktradition fruchtbar gemacht, mithin 15 Jahre vor Germaine de Staels berühmtem Buch "De l'Allemagne" (1810/13)  und 20 Jahre vor Victor Cousin, der deutsche Philosophie als Gegenstand der Philosophiegeschichte etabliert. Aus diesem Grund ist die von Germaine de Stael etablierte "Parallèle des Français et des Allemands" für die Zeit bis 1815 neu zu rekonstruieren und die Linie nachzuzeichnen, die die akademische Philosophiereform Victor Cousins seit 1815-1830 von seinen real-idealistisch argumejntierenden Vorgängern, namentlich Marie-Joseph de Gérando und François Gonthier Maine de Biran, trennt.

Der Band stellt das mittelalterliche Buch als Träger griechischer und byzantinischer Texte in den Mittelpunkt. Das zentrale Anliegen des Bandes gilt daher ebenso der Weiterentwicklung der Erforschung des Buches in seiner Materialität wie auch in seinem historischen und literaturgeschichtlichen Kontext. Renommierte Expert/-innen und Nachwuchsforscher/-innen aus den Forschungsfeldern Kodikologie und Paläographie, Klassischer Philologie und Byzantinistik, Theologie und Kirchengeschichte bis hin zur Kunstgeschichte bereichern mit ihren Studien unsere Kenntnis von den Byzantinern und ihrem kulturellen Umfeld und möchten zugleich die Verdienste von Erich Lamberz um die griechischen (und lateinischen) Texte und Bücher würdigen. Der Band, der sich an Forschende und Studierende der genannten Forschungsgebiete gleichermaßen richtet, enthält neben dem Vorwort auch einen Index der zitierten Handschriften sowie ein Schriftenverzeichnis des Geehrten.

This master's thesis addresses the problem of the uncritical acceptance of John of Damascus’ allegations against Egyptian Christians, specifically in Chapter 83 of his work De haeresibus, which has led to a narrative favoring the Chalcedonian perspective. This is significant because it has resulted in the mischaracterization of The Coptic Orthodox Christology as heretical. This research aims to examine the accuracy and validity of John of Damascus’ claims in light of historical records, focusing on whether the Egyptian rejection of the Council of Chalcedon was justified, if their separation signified a departure from orthodoxy, if Dioscorus of Alexandria defended the teachings of Eutyches, and if Egyptians were truly Monophysites. Existing literature relating to the Council of Chalcedon, the life and writings of John of Damascus, and the theological debates between Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian perspectives was examined. The findings may correct historical misconceptions and promote a more accurate representation of the events and theological positions surrounding the Council of Chalcedon. Therefore, this research may influence future scholarship by encouraging a more critical engagement with patristic sources and promoting a more accurate appreciation of the Coptic Orthodox Church and its theological and historical perspectives.

Nel Concilio Vaticano II è presente una notevole teologia delle realtà terrene e della vita civile, e Maritain ne è uno dei maggiori ispiratori. La ricerca teologica, che non autorizza alcuna astrazione dai problemi del mondo reale, include una 'teologia politica', che nell'epoca contemporanea consideri la nuova situazione della polis e provveda a correggere un cristianesimo privatizzato e rinchiuso nella sola interiorità. Il filosofo francese ha contribuito robustamente a tale deprivatizzazione della fede già dagli anni '30. Con le sue idee che le realtà terrene (economia, cultura, politica, Stato) hanno leggi proprie e un valore non strumentale ma finale in un ordine dato, e che il cristianesimo ha un compito ed un messaggio rilevanti anche per la vita sociale, egli è stato un precursore ed un maestro. La proposta sulla missione temporale del cristiano sintetizza in un termine forte tali intuizioni, che dopo il Concilio troveranno respiro in varie forme di teologia politica e di impegno laicale cristiano. Al centro del lavoro di Maritain sta l'idea dell'Incarnazione del Verbo, che dà origine a concezioni e culture attente al carattere incarnatorio e sociale del cristianesimo. La sua teologia politica si differenzia in questo non poco dalla Politische theologie di Carl Schmitt, attenta soprattutto agli ismorfismi tra concetti teologici e concetti giuridico-politici, indirizzandosi a mostrare in numerosi scritti (in specie Umanesimo integrale, Cristianesimo e democrazia, L'uomo e lo Stato) la necessità di un influsso lievitante del Vangelo sulla politica.

The 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea is an invitation to both re-encounter the triune God and re-examine the covenantal faithfulness of the Church in a wounded and waiting world. Reformed churches celebrate the Nicene faith - but not uncritically. Receiving is not passive acceptance, but radical engagement. For the Reformed tradition, the anniversary is a call to interrogate, discern, and renew the very grammar of our faith. Reformed hermeneutics receives such anniversaries not as closures of doctrinal certainty, but as openings where theology can be re-tested in the fire of Scripture, re-voiced in the cries of the wounded, and re-shaped in the pulse of mission

El libro analiza cómo se gestionaron los intereses diplomáticos de Felipe II en el Sacro Imperio entre 1559 y 1570, sobre todo en calidad de duque de Borgoña y, en menor medida, como duque de Milán. También explica que esos intereses pertenecían mayormente a un subsistema diplomático denominado «política del Norte». En segundo término, explica la razón por la que algunos antiguos servidores de Carlos V, que formaban parte de la representación diplomática de Felipe II ante el Sacro Imperio, fueron desplazados por hombres de la Península Ibérica. En tercer lugar, muestra que la defensa de los intereses jurisdiccionales y confesionales de Felipe II en el Sacro Imperio eran una expresión de dinámicas diplomáticas multilaterales. Finalmente, identifica y explica los temas referidos a la Italia imperial que trataron sus embajadores permanentes en Viena. La investigación muestra que el manejo de los intereses diplomáticos de Felipe II en el Sacro Imperio entre 1559 y 1570 experimentó un proceso de transición. Pasó de un modelo borgoñón a uno hispano que dependía del subsistema diplomático «política del Norte». Este último, casi a modo de una reminiscencia, hundía sus raíces en la tradición de los antiguos duques de Borgoña y dotaba de sentido y organización a los mecanismos empleados por el Rey Prudente. El dinasticismo, la multilateralidad y el desdoblamiento de su representación (duque de Borgoña y de Milán, príncipe extranjero, pariente de los emperadores) fueron sus principales recursos para tratar de alcanzar sus objetivos en el espacio imperial.

This study reexamines the Council of Nicaea (325 CE) in light of early Jewish apocalyptic traditions, New Testament subordinationism, and the writings of the ante-Nicene Fathers. Contrary to the prevailing view that Nicaea consolidated apostolic faith, the paper argues that its declaration of the Son as homoousios with the Father represented a decisive rupture with earlier Christologies. Second Temple Jewish texts, particularly Daniel and 1 Enoch, depict exalted intermediary figures-such as the "Son of Man" or Michael-who exercise divine authority while remaining subordinate to God. This framework shaped the New Testament, where Christ is consistently portrayed as exalted by God and entrusted with authority, yet ultimately subject to the Father (e.g., 1 Cor 15:28; John 14:28). The ante-Nicene Fathers, including Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Tertullian, and Novatian, continued this trajectory by affirming the Son's preexistence and divinity but subordinating him in rank and origin. Athanasius' insistence at Nicaea on the Son's eternal consubstantiality, however, marked a decisive departure, one that employed Hellenistic metaphysical categories to secure theological uniformity. Political pressures under Constantine amplified this development, ensuring consensus through imperial enforcement rather than exegetical fidelity. The Nicene settlement, therefore, represents a theological innovation born from both philosophical shifts and imperial necessity. Modern parallels, such as movements that retain an exalted-but-subordinate Christology, illustrate continuity with the earliest Christian confessions and challenge the assumption that Nicaea represents an unbroken line of apostolic tradition.

Este artigo analisa o pouco conhecido fenômeno do

Tripapismo que ocorreu no início do século XV, um período de nove anos onde existiram três linhagens pontifícias simultâneas. O estudo traça as raízes do episódio ao


Cisma do Ocidente, que por sua vez, foi resultado do Papado de Avignon. O texto desafia a noção de unicidade papal hegemônica da Igreja, mostrando que a figura do "antipapa" é uma designação póstuma da linhagem vencedora. O autor examina as tentativas de unificação da Igreja, destacando o papel do



Concílio de Pisa (1409) que, ironicamente, resultou na criação de uma terceira linha papal. Por fim, o trabalho detalha o tenso e politicamente complexo


Concílio de Constança (1414-1418), onde, através de manobras de poder, a figura de João XXIII, Papa de Pisa, é apagada , a Igreja é reunificada e o episódio do Tripapismo chega oficialmente ao fim.

Valdinievole tra ‘800 e ‘900: calunnie ed intrighi, ma anche onestà!
La mattina del 24 dicembre 1886 si presentarono nella mia chiesa in tempo della S. Messa, il Sig. Alfredo di Domenico Tagliavini e di Silvia Pacilli e la fanciulla Maria Palmira di Ferdinando Angeli e di Rosa Fattorini di questo mio popolo per fare il Matrimonio Clandestino, e di fatto mi sorpresero mentre mi voltai a dire Dominus vobiscum dopo il post-communio della S. Messa. Il giovane Alfredo Tagliavini pronunziò – questa è la mia sposa, e la fanciulla rispose questo è il mio sposo alla presenza di due testimoni, miei parrocchiani, portati appositamente. Così scriveva il parroco di SS. Bartolomeo e Andrea Ap. di Monte a Pescia, don Giovanni Paganelli, al proprio vescovo mons. Giovanni Benini il di 29 dicembre successivo.

Alessandro Manzoni ne “I Promessi Sposi” non aveva osato tanto…… Così inizia il nuovo libro di Marco Ricci: “Camminare nella modernità: la chiesa pesciatina da mons. Giulio Matteoli e mons. Donato Velluti Zati (1897 – 1908). Storie di santità, calunnie ed intrighi”.

Ma c’è chi crede che tutto fosse stato orchestrato ad arte e altri che negano perfino che il matrimonio sia avvenuto! Il canonico Franco Biagini racconta, in una sua pubblicazione, l’episodio scherzandoci sopra e negandolo. Narra che don Paganelli raccontasse di aver subito, quella Vigilia di Natale, un sopruso. Tagliavini Alfredo e Maria Palmira Angeli, al suo voltarsi al “Dominus Vobiscum” del “Communio” tentarono di fare un matrimonio di sorpresa. Sventato fortunatamente dal suo riflesso pronto fra l’ilarità del pubblico presente.

I certificati parrocchiali sembrerebbero attestare …. al lettore il giudizio!

L’800 si chiude con altri “fattacci irrituali”. Il 7 agosto del 1897 accade una contestazione eclatante a mons. Matteoli e dalla vasta risonanza. Il Vescovo pesciatino con il concorso di una grande folla inaugura il comitato parrocchiale di Traversagna. Durante la cerimonia in chiesa si svolgono contestazioni e alla sua partenza viene fischiato e preso a sassate.
Ben altra risonanza avrà un altro episodio durante l’episcopato di mons. Matteoli e se ne parlerà, perfino, nelle stanze ministeriali romane per almeno 6 mesi! A partire dal giugno del 1898, Castelvecchio in Valleriana per molti mesi attirerà l’attenzione della magistratura e del governo. Don Stefanelli Saturnino, chierico della diocesi di Bologna ma ordinato prete a Pescia fa firmare ai capifamiglia di Castelvecchio una lettera rivolta al Prefetto di Lucca (allora la Valeriana e Pescia erano provincia lucchese) e al ministro di Grazia e Giustizia e Culti nella quale la popolazione chiede all’autorità civile (sic!) che il nuovo parroco sia don Saturnino:  la popolazione ha riscontrato nello Stefanelli, con piacere e piena soddisfazione di tutti, sufficiente istruzione, principi sani, animo benevolo e tutte le migliori doti che si richiedono alla direzione morale e spirituale del popolo e tutti sono felici e aspettavano la nomina a pievano. Sono venuti a conoscenza, senza saperne le ragioni, che la curia di Pescia voglia allontanare lo Stefanelli dal paese che lo ha caro e graditissimo. Fanno istanza affinché sia nominato lo Stefanelli parroco o in alternativa sia messa la carica a concorso fidenti che lo Stefanelli vinca. Il Guardasigilli, si suppone per l’intervento dell’on. Martini, presta la massima attenzione alla richiesta. Si dipanano una serie di indagini giudiziarie e dichiarazioni di sindaci. Sembrerebbe che per almeno il resto del 1898 il governo nazionale non abbia altro da pensare che al parroco di Castelvecchio! Ovviamente in questa sede non posso indicare la complessa corrispondenza intercorsa tra i diversi organi statali centrali e periferici che si sussegue incalzante. In questi atti emergono opportunismi e vigliaccherie specie di esponenti politici ma anche atti di coraggio e responsabilità da parte di alcuni pubblici ufficiali!
Il ‘900 si apre con la presenza assidua in Valdinievole dell’economista Giuseppe Toniolo. Il 3 febbraio 1901 tiene una conferenza nella sala convegni del Seminario pesciatino e il settimanale «La Croce» riferisce, che assai prima dell’ora indicata per la conferenza, la vasta sala del Seminario era letteralmente gremita di ascoltanti differenti per età, per condizione, per principii, per posizione sociale. Vi erano aristocratici, borghesi, industriali, preti e frati, operai ecc. Il gentil sesso era largamente rappresentato e vedemmo delle donne del popolo sedere vicine a qualche dama elegante della nostra aristocrazia. Notammo tra la folla molti giovani ascritti al Partito Socialista. Ovvero una società, senza distinzione di genere, sensibile alle istanze dell’aggiornamento scientifico e ove le donne, nobili o popolane, sembrano accumunate nell’affermare la propria emancipazione.
Il primo decennio del secolo si chiude con la presenza in diocesi di un visitatore apostolico (perché?) che fa le “pulci” al clero e calunnia il vescovo Mons. Donato Velluti Zati, persona sempre pacata e mite, inventandosi un uomo violento e molto malato. Scrive al Papa: “come vescovo non mi sembra troppo capace per amministrare e dirigere una Diocesi. Egli è molto cagionevole di salute (morirà dopo oltre 20 anni! ndr) ed è soggetto specialmente ad urto nervoso si forte che in certi momenti sembra un pazzo. Allora è impossibile trattare con lui perché alla prima parola che le viene detta, alla minima difficoltà che le viene fatta, si agita, si dimena colla persona, vocia forte e bene spesso esce in espressioni abbastanza offensive. Io credo peraltro che non andrà molto e, stante la sua malferma salute, da se stesso dimetterà il grave officio del governo di questa Diocesi.
Il Visitatore otterrà le dimissioni ma il nostro vescovo venderà “cara la pelle” opponendosi con successo al desiderio dell’arcivescovo di Lucca Mons. Lorenzelli ad assorbire la diocesi di Pescia. Ovviamente i “colpi di scena” non possono essere qui riassunti ma gli avvenimenti sono davvero avvincenti fino al culmine dell’impensabile! Il papa Pio X in tre mesi deve smentire pubblicamente quello che aveva sentenziato per Pescia. Inoltre, il nostro mons. Velluti Zati tornerà a Firenze con il titolo di Arcivescovo…….
L’attenzione non è rivolta solo alla Chiesa (gli archivi ecclesiastici sono più forniti e raccolti in un limitato numero di siti) ma anche della società civile e ai suoi esponenti di maggior rilievo istituzionale. Con la globalizzazione unitaria la classe dirigente non riesce a mantenere i ruoli apicali (economici, culturali, politici) nel nuovo assetto istituzionale e di conseguenza maturano tra i soggetti che esprimono l’identità locale processi tipici di una società che ha smarrito il suo sentiero di sviluppo.  Le maggiori dimensioni imprenditoriali e l’aggiornamento tecnologico richiesto per concorrere in un mercato dilatato dall’unità politica dell’Italia non vengono perseguiti, tra l’altro, per la mancata evoluzione organizzativa di imprese rimaste con caratteristiche familiari, e l’imprenditoria locale evolve verso una crescente marginalità nei mercati di riferimento e fino ad irretirsi nel degrado dell’immobilismo clientelare. Esempi significativi sono le traiettorie politiche prima dell’on./sen. Leopoldo Galeotti e poi dell’on./sen. Ferdinando Martini che rappresentano significativamente il percorso della classe apicale locale che li esprime e supporta. Il Galeotti è l’ultimo esponente di rilievo del gruppo dirigente locale che riesce ad inserirsi prima tra i vertici dello stato regionale e poi in quelli unitari, con una propria dialettica politica. Il Martini conseguirà obiettivi più limitati nell’appartenenza politica, nella sostanza di sottogoverno, funzionali al più arretrato assetto economico locale. Accompagnerà, in primo luogo, il degrado dell’identità valdinievolina, e poi l’emarginazione della sua classe dirigente nella società italiana tra fine Ottocento ed inizio Novecento. Lo stesso Martini, significativamente, nel 1928 acconsentirà il distacco di parte della Valdinievole dalla provincia di Lucca per essere aggregata alla neonata provincia di Pistoia, che aveva bisogno di un più ampio territorio (essenzialmente per motivazioni demografiche ed economiche) per giustificarne l’esistenza. L’operazione certifica l’ormai irrilevanza della classe dirigente locale e del suo massimo rappresentante politico nella gestione della Valdinievole anche come entità autonoma, accettandone perfino la divisione e la subordinazione alla nuova istituzione pistoiese.
Un libro che solo apparentemente narra di avvenimenti passati ma racconta il presente ricorrendo ai registri, ironici o seriosi, del politicamente corretto. Buona lettura!

This article addresses the relationship between religious local practice and Byzantine canon law in mid-sixteenth century Muscovy, by analysing the Stoglav [Hundred Chapters] treatise. The Stoglav was the product of a local Church council, and its mission was to provide a unified ecclesiastical practice in the emergent empire. Its compilation was consistent with the midsixteenth century Muscovite attempts to codify various aspects of public and private life. I argue that the Orthodox "tradition" the council's resolutions aimed to restore was, in fact, an attempt to find consensus between the canon law of Eastern Christianity and locally generated practices aimed at issues specific to the East Slavic space. The article has two parts. The first one assesses the usage of local secular legislation on ecclesiastical issues and the reworking of texts such as the Donation of Constantine. The second part focuses on the letters and decrees of previous metropolitans of Rus', some of them recognised as saints by the time the treatise was compiled, as the basis of decisions recorded by the Stoglav. By exploring the introduction, usage, and adaptation of local sources, I discuss the resolutions on issues such as the status of widower priests or the authority of Church courts as having been perceived in terms of continuity rather than as a shift from the Byzantine models.

This research examines the theological, political, and cultural importance of four seventh-century Visigothic synods: the Fourth, Sixth, Eleventh, and Sixteenth Councils of Toledo, via their distinct symbols of faith. These creedal formulations are not new innovations, but rather doctrinal sedimentations of older conciliar tradition, especially those of Nicaea, Constantinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon. This paper examines the Christological and Trinitarian elements of each symbol, emphasizing the distinctive theological synthesis of the Spanish Church and its liturgical implementation. The document emphasizes the significance of these councils in reinforcing Visigothic religio-political cohesion, referencing the works of theologians like Isidore of Seville and Julian of Toledo. It contends that these symbols served not just as theological assertions but also as performative texts integrated into everyday liturgical and social practices. The essay examines the councils' impact on Western theological evolution and the establishment of ecclesial identity within the context of the greater Patristic tradition.

El presente ensayo reflexiona sobre la estrecha relación que se da en el emperador Carlos V entre su comprensión del Imperio y la relación estrecha e dependencia que se da con la Iglesia católica. A partir de dichas claves es posible entender algunas actuaciones del emperador.

Throughout his life, Eugenio Corecco was deeply fascinated by the United
States of America. He developed this fascination for affective reasons, but
also for reasons of study and research. In the studies of Corecco carried out
in continental Europe, not many realise that this fascination was mutual.
This article presents a comprehensive overview of the reception of Corecco's
thought and general theory of canon law in American and Anglophone
scholarship. Special attention is given to the process of ontologizing faith
and theology within Corecco's reflection on communio.

This chapter reevaluates Walahfrid Strabo’s Vita of Otmar (d. 759), the founder of the Monastery of St. Gallen, focusing on its description of the trial that led to Otmar’s deposition and imprisonment. It argues that Walahfrid’s aim was not primarily to produce a text that established the cult of a foundation saint but rather a “Defensio Otmari” that engaged with the accusations of sexual misconduct that were still part of the collective memory of the community of St. Gallen. Otmar was – reluctantly – established as a founding saint of St. Gallen only two generations after the production of the Vita Otmari.
I place the trial in the context of contemporary legislation on monastic reform and clerical and monastic purity and show that Walahfrid’s description entirely lined up with the emerging monastic reform program and its normative basis.
Moreover, Otmar’s trial gives access to the networks of power in which St. Gallen was situated and the different stakeholders that tried to get control over the monastery, its wealth and its mode of living: the Carolingian rulers and their local representatives, local aristocratic families, donors, and members of the monastic community. Lantpert, whom Walahfrid vilified as one of the accusers of Otmar can probably be identified with Landbert, one of the most important donors of the monastery. His and his mother’s donations laid the basis for St. Gallen’s future wealth.
The Versus Winitharii, a sermon that was composed soon after Otmar’s deposition, most likely addressed its fallout on the community and the necessity to establish a proper vita regularis in St. Gallen. Reading the Vita Otmari along with the Versus Winitharii enhances our understanding of the process of turning the Regula Benedicti into the guiding monastic norm as part of the Carolingian monastic reform program.

O período de três séculos que forma nosso tema é o período central da Idade Média. Seus interesses são múltiplos; mas quase todos se concentram na grande luta entre o Império e o Papado, que dá à história medieval uma unidade notavelmente ausente em tempos mais modernos. A história da Igreja durante esses trezentos anos é mais política do que em qualquer outro período. Para entender a razão disso, será bom no início esboçar em linhas gerais as teorias políticas propostas na Idade Média sobre as relações entre Igreja e Estado. Só assim podemos evitar a inevitável confusão mental que deve resultar do uso de termos familiares na vida moderna.

O pensamento medieval, então, retirando seus materiais de fontes romanas, germânicas e cristãs, concebeu o Universo como Civitas Dei, o Estado de Deus, abrangendo tanto o céu quanto a terra, com Deus como a fonte, o guia e o objetivo final. Agora, este Universo contém várias partes, uma das quais é composta pela humanidade; e o destino da humanidade é identificado com o de Cristandade. Daí se segue que a humanidade pode ser descrita como a Comunidade da Raça Humana; e a unidade sob uma lei e um governo é essencial para a realização do propósito divino.

Mas essa própria unidade do Universo inteiro dá um duplo aspecto à vida da humanidade, que tem que ser vivida neste mundo com vista à sua continuação no próximo. Assim, Deus designou duas Ordens separadas, cada uma completa em sua própria esfera, uma preocupada com a organização dos assuntos para esta vida, a outra encarregada da preparação da humanidade para a vida por vir.

Mas esse dualismo de lealdade estava em conflito direto com a ideia de unidade. As duas Ordens separadas foram distinguidas como Sacerdotium e Regnum ou Imperium; e a necessidade sentida pelos pensadores medievais de reconciliar esses dois na unidade superior da Civitas Dei começou especulações sobre a relação entre as esferas eclesiástica e secular.

The purpose of this study is to trace, analyze, and evaluate the attitudes of the Protestant reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546), over the course of his career, toward the biblical figures of Esther and Mordecai, and toward the book of Esther as a whole. Luther's statements concerning Esther are not consistent. On the one hand, he refers positively to the characters of Esther and Mordecai, particularly early on in his career. Later on, these positive references become more infrequent, with only two late references to Esther herself as "(most) pious." On the other hand, Luther makes several sharply negative statements that criticize the book of Esther as a whole and its Jewish character, particularly in the later stage of his career. The “filioque”, which is a Latin phrase; meaning and the Son, states that the Holy Spirit comes from the Son as well as from the Father. The filioque, which constitutes a theological issue about the origin of the Holy Spirit, played a leading role in the division of Christendom into East-West/Catholic-Orthodox. The decisions taken in the general and local councils were decisive in the formation of the basic teachings of Christianity. In the First Nicaea and First Constantinople councils, the deity of Jesus and the Holy Spirit was decided, respectively; thus, the Christian world completed its trinitarian belief. In the Ephesus, Chalcedon and Third Constantinople councils, it was clearly stated that the Nicea-Constantinople Declaration of Faith could not be changed. However, the Western Church, at the Council of Toledo which have a local feature, by adding the supplement to the Nicea-Constantinople Decleration of Faith, claimed that the Holy Spirit came from the Son as well as from the Father. Eastern Church officials described it as a heresy. Because they interpreted the Western Church’s addition of the suffix filioque to the credo as attributing two sources to the Holy Spirit, abolishing God’s monarchy, inconsistent with the expressions of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament, and changing the decisions taken in the ecumenical councils. Both the references from the New Testament and the statements of the church fathers they followed were influential in the explanations of the Eastern and Western churches on the filioque issue. As a matter of fact, Western church fathers claimed that the Holy Spirit derives its source from both the Father and the Son, by interpreting the New Testament's references to the Holy Spirit and emphasizing the essential relationship between the trinity elements; Eastern church fathers, with a few exceptions (Didymus the Blind, Epiphanius of Cyprus, and Cyril of Alexandria), argued that the Holy Spirit came only from the Father, citing the clear statement in the New Testament that it came from the Father. In addition, it would not be right to ignore the guidance of Arianist and Priscillianist ideas in the Western Church’s addition of the filioque suffix to the creed. Indeed, the Western Church, on the one hand, argued against Arianist ideas that the Son is not inferior to the Father; on the other hand, emphasized against Priscillianists that the Holy Spirit has the same essence as the Father and the Son. In this context, the article examines the background of the filioque issue from the perspective of the East-West Church, including the references in the sacred texts and the explanations of the Latin-Greek church fathers, after the introduction and historical process on the subject. In the article, the subject is handled objectively by using the historical, comparative and descriptive method. In this study, which is important in terms of revealing the background of the filioque issue, it is tried to draw attention to what is decisive in the explanations of the Eastern and Western churches about filioque, which is a theological subject. As a result of the research, it was seen that the filioque doctrine could not be traced back to the Latin church father Tertullian in terms of origin, it was not clearly revealed by Hilary of Poitiers and Ambrose of Milan, and it was clearly recorded by Augustine for the first time. In the background of the filioque issue, although it is mentioned that the Western Church added the suffix filioque to the Nicea-Constantinople creed in order to suppress the Arianist and Priscillianist views, it has been determined that Augustine’s statements about the trinity were effective in this. The Western Church officials consideredthe Greek rejection of the filioque doctrine as a heresy of the East; the representatives of the Eastern Church, on the other hand, evaluated the acceptance of the said doctrine by the Latins as the separation of the West from the orthodox view. The Greeks interpreted the Latins’ addition of the filioque suffix to the credo in a local council as a violation of a decision taken in the ecumenical council. Because, according to them, this situation is inconsistent with the understanding that the Holy Spirit, one of the trinity elements, is present in the ecumenical councils and that a decision taken under his control cannot be changed. Therefore, with this attitude, the Western Church acted against not only the decisions of the Nicea-Constantinople council, but also the decisions of the Ephesus, Chalcedon and Third Constantinople councils, which confirmed that the decisions of the said councils could not be changed, and disregarded a decision taken under the control of the Holy Spirit.

The Center for Religious and Legal History (Saint Louis University), in partnership with Fscire (Bologna), is pleased to announce a two-fascicle special issue of the Quaderni di storia religiosa medievale, set to be published in 2028, entitled “Rules, Norms, and Discipline.”
The issue intends to expand medievalists’ understanding of the function, purpose, and importance of norms and discipline within the administration of ecclesiastical communities and hierarchies. It also aims to expand medievalists’ perspective on what is relevant to and included within the concepts of law and normativity, pushing historians to ponder these concepts as inclusive of but expanded beyond the confines of monastic Rules (e.g. the Rule of St. Benedict, the constitutions of the Dominican Order) on the side of religious orders and synodal statutes on the side of dioceses and parishes. The issue encourages studies of these important sources but asks contributors to think about the significance and application of them, particularly in relationship to specific dioceses, parishes, communal religious communities, anchoritic communities, or in specific regions, or within specific orders. The issue also asks scholars to explore mechanisms, rationales, and practices for maintaining order and disciplining erring members or subordinates that might not be expressed in formal written rules but leave evidence in other kinds of historical source material (e.g., letters, hagiography, sermons, liturgical ordines, inquisitorial records, canonization procedures, town statutes, chronicles, visitation records, visual culture, etc.).

Darstellungen der Akathistos Hymnos erscheinen erst in der byzantinischen Wandmalerei des 14. Jahrhundert. Die Ausbreitung einer liturgischen Thematik außerhalb der Altarapsis, besonders ins Pastophorien und Seitenschiffe, wurde als eine der wichtigsten Tendenzen in der byzantinischen Wandmalerei des 13. und 14. Jahrhundert verteidigt. Als Gottesmutter geweihtes Gesung und gleichzeitigen Huldigung der Menschwerdung Christi gehört der Akathistos Hymnos zum allgemeinen Thema der Inkarnationsmysterium, indem die spätbyzantinische Kirchenmalerei besonders interessiert ist. Der Akathistos wird zum Hauptthema des Narthexraum im 16. Jh. Klosterkirchen in der Wallachei. Die Lokalbeispielen und die byzantinische Tradition spielen einen Zusammenrolle in der Anschaffung des Narthexprogramms der 16. Jh. Denkmäler.

Although the pericope about the Wedding at Cana (John 2:1-11) did not garner significant interest in Late Antiquity, several commentaries and homilies on it have been preserved, particularly within the literature of the Christian East. This article examines various Greek texts from the second to the fifth centuries, including the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, John Chrysostom, Epiphanius of Salamis, and Cyril of Alexandria. Special attention is given to texts in Syriac, which often present a distinct perspective on biblical theology. Saint Ephrem (4th cent.) provided an extensive exegetical commentary rich in theological themes, while Jacob of Sarug (5th/6th cent.) offered a poetic homily. A homily by Benjamin I, the Patriarch of Alexandria in the seventh century, has been preserved in both Coptic dialect and Arabic translation; this work primarily serves as a treatise against heretics. Within Ethiopic literature, the Wedding at Cana is elaborated upon in the apocryphal Miracles of Jesus (14th cent.). In the Treasure of the Faith (16th cent.), the miracle is interpreted within a Christological framework, akin to the approach of Giyorgis of Saglā (14th/15th cent.) in the Book of the Mysteries, likely based on earlier sources. Additionally, an Ethiopic homily mistakenly attributed to John Chrysostom (CAe 2150; see CPG Sup. 5190.14), translated into Polish here for the first time, discusses the unity of divinity and humanity in Christ since the Incarnation, particularly in polemics against Nestorius, and contains significant eschatological and Marian themes, indicating its composition post-Ephesian crisis. The influence of Ephrem's exegesis is also evident, possibly mediated through the works of Jacob of Sarug, whose homilies reached medieval Ethiopia via Arabic translations.

The article argues that the College of Bishops has supreme authority in the Church and that the papal monarchy, first formulated by Pope Leo the Great is a mistake. The Pope is the Primate of the College of Bishops, not the monarch of the whole Church.

In this edited volume, which celebrated the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, my chapter looks at how the Indian Thomas Christian yogams have expressed the legacy of conciliarity with lay participation in temporal matters from the first century onwards.

Il manoscritto della Regola dei Cavalieri Templari oggetto di questo studio è conservato presso la Biblioteca Nazionale della Repubblica Ceca (Národní knihovna České republiky) con la segnatura XXIII.G.66 e porta il titolo latino "Regula commilitonum templi". Questo prezioso documento, databile paleograficamente alla fine del XIII - inizio del XIV secolo, rappresenta una delle testimonianze più tarde ma contemporanee all'Ordine del Tempio, prodotta negli ultimi decenni di vita dei Templari prima della soppressione del 1312.
Dal punto di vista codicologico, il manoscritto presenta caratteristiche tipiche della scrittura gotica libraria precoce ed è stato realizzato da una sola mano. La decorazione include rubricazione e iniziali ornamentali di altezza generalmente pari a due righe di testo, mentre ornamenti rossi riempiono gli spazi vuoti alla fine delle righe.
Il manoscritto praghese si inserisce nel contesto degli studi internazionali condotti dalla storica italiana Simonetta Cerrini, che ha prodotto una nuova edizione critica della Regola templare basata su tutti i manoscritti sopravvissuti. Il suo lavoro ha identificato inizialmente nove manoscritti della Regola templare del 1129, ai quali si è successivamente aggiunto un decimo manoscritto scoperto a Edimburgo. Come documentato negli atti del processo e analizzato da Malcolm Barber, durante il processo contro i Templari (1307-1312), molti manoscritti della Regola furono confiscati dalle autorità reali francesi e alcuni deliberatamente distrutti, circostanza che spiega la relativa scarsità di testimoni testuali e l'importanza straordinaria di ogni manoscritto superstite.

Son muy numerosos los celebrados desde el medievo hasta la actualidad en Andalucía. Todos se insertan en los aires de reforma de la Iglesia, cuyos exponentes más significativos son los concilios ecuménicos de Trento (1545-1563), Vaticano I (1869-1870) y Vaticano II (1962-1965). Adquieren, por ende, gran importancia para el conocimiento de la evolución histórica de las iglesias locales en el marco de la Iglesia universal. El presente trabajo pretende indicar pautas o sugerencias de la utilización de los textos sinodales andaluces como fuente de investigación, así como dar unas pinceladas sobre la metodología que puede emplearse.

Papa Leo XIV'ün 2025 yılında İznik'te düzenlenmesi planlanan Birinci Konsil'in 1700. yıl dönümü etkinliklerine katılmak üzere Türkiye'ye gelme olasılığı, yalnızca Katolik dünyası için değil, Türkiye ve Ortadoğu açısından da çok katmanlı bir anlam taşıyor. Hristiyan teolojisinin yapı taşlarından biri olan ve 325 yılında İmparator Konstantin'in çağrısıyla toplanan Birinci İznik Konsili, yalnızca dinî bir meclis değil, aynı zamanda Hristiyanlığın siyasi ve doktrinel olarak kurumsallaşmasının da başlangıcıydı.
