Latin Palaeography

Entre la documentación procedente de los monasterios cistercienses de la diócesis de Lugo – en concreto, Santa María de Meira, Santa María de Penamaior y Santa María de Ferreira de Pantón – para la Plena Edad Media (siglos XI-XIII), se conservan una veintena de pancartas, esto es, pergaminos con dos o más documentos. A través de este significativo número de ejemplares, el presente trabajo se aproxima al origen y finalidad de esta práctica diplomática, extrayendo las siguientes conclusiones: las pancartas nacen, primero, para confirmar aquellas acciones jurídicas anteriores que pueden ser impugnadas por el donante o sus herederos; en segundo lugar, para asegurar el registro escrito, ya sea en forma de cartas completas, resúmenes con lo esencial o noticias breves, ante la multiplicación de negocios hechos con pequeños nobles y campesinos acomodados de la zona; y, finalmente, para facilitar su consulta y custodia en el archivo monástico. Para demostrar dichas conclusiones realizamos un análisis
integral de las distintas piezas, atendiendo tanto a los aspectos materiales como a su contenido (soportes y morfologías, escrituras, autores jurídicos y artífices materiales, fórmulas, tradición, etc.).

Los restantes capítulos que integran el grueso de la publicación abordan el clero como colectivo social productor, receptor, creador, copista y conservador de escritura desde variados prismas y ópticas, como las que revalorizan la trayectoria biográfica del personaje en relación con su obra o con aquel documento o documentos que lo involucran. Tal fue el caso de Diego Martínez (1378-1422), racionero, prior y contador de la catedral de Sevilla, cuya semblanza nos ofrece Diego Belmonte; Bartolomé Solano, canónigo de la catedral de Málaga a comienzos del siglo XVI, glosado por Iván Muñoz o el obispo Antonio Agustín y su Diálogo de Medallas… (1587), análisis que aborda José María De Francisco. En el mismo plano, pero en relación inversa, se proyecta el foco de atención sobre la obra que nos revela a su creador, copista o ejecutor. Tal es el caso del responsorio Beata Dei Genitrix, del copista de la catedral de Málaga Francisco Javier García Fajer, cuya salmodia exploran Mª José de la Torre y Lorena Barco; el Libro de Alfabetos de Antonio Rodríguez (Monterrey, 1599), presentado por Adrián Ares o el Estilo y formulario de cartas familiares (1600) de Jerónimo Paulo de Manzanares, elaborado por Daniel Sáez. Tampoco se descuida en el seno de la obra la íntima relación existente, desde los comienzos del notariado en Europa, entre clero y notariado apostólico, semblanza que nos ofrece Néstor Vigil para el entorno de las urbes bajomedievales y Pablo Alberto Mestre proyecta sobre los establecimientos de caridad sevillanos. Finalmente, en abundantes capítulos, asistiremos a la puesta en escena del texto en su contexto clerical de producción, en el que se concitan instituciones monásticas,

A dieci anni dalla pubblicazione della nostra teoria su come riconoscere l'aspetto femminile e l'aspetto maschile della personalità, tramite la Grafologia Moderna, ripropongo per Laberianum i concetti base che con Riccardo Bruni pubblicai sulla rivista “Civiltà della Scrittura” (Fondazione Giulietti), come compendio per il nostro libro: Leggere l'anima – sistema di Grafologia Moderna, Riccardo Bruni e Sergio Sapetti, edizione Psiche2 Torino.
Nel corso di questo decennio abbiamo approfondito, confermato e migliorato la conoscenza di questo metodo, constatando che oltre alla validità intrinseca teorica, esso costituisce un sempre maggior sussidio per svolgere esami grafologici delle attuali grafie che sono sempre più scritte in caratteri stampatello e con personalizzazioni che si discostano notevolmente dai modelli calligrafici storici.
Dato che l'approfondimento è rivolto a chi già conosce e utilizza la grafologia, in questa dispensa, oltre ad inserire l'articolo originale del marzo 2015, aggiungerò alcune specifiche tecniche ma non mi soffermerò su esempi e dettagli grafici, rimandandoli alle numerose dimostrazioni che nel frattempo aggiunsi nelle pubblicazioni on line.

Benedikt af Nursia, der var den store klostergrundlaegger, og dermed gennem benediktinerklosteret i Cluny fra 1100-tallet kom til at spille en afgørende rolle for de første klostre langs pilgrimsvejen. Klostre som vi pilgrimme stadig gør brug af som pilgrimsherberger. Anmeldelse af Bernadette Preben-Hansen Det er en rar lille bog, anmelderen har fået i hånden. Den er enkel, disciplineret i sin praesentation, klaedt som den er i et omslag i en passende liturgisk farve, og den har en sort laesesnor. This article examines the metrical and palaeographic aspects of the funerary altar dedicated to Vettius Agorius Praetextatus and Fabia Aconia Paulina. The metrical analysis reveals that the inscriptions are composed in iambic trimeter (iat) rather than in iambic senarius (ia6), suggesting a tragic and solemn tone in keeping with the funerary context. The study also delves into the palaeographic features, highlighting errors and confusions between letters that appear to stem not only from the carelessness of the stonecutter but also from the nature of the exemplar used. Finally, a reinterpretation of verse 35 from the pars postica is proposed, offering a correction to the traditionally edited text (subolemque pulchram si tuae similis putant).

L’opera anepigrafa nota con il titolo La provvidenza, da attribuire verosimilmente all’epicureo Filodemo, è da sempre considerata un testo estremamente interessante; allo stesso tempo, la grave frammentarietà del rotolo, unita ai suoi contenuti molto tecnici e non facili da interpretare, non ne hanno favorito un’adeguata ricezione. Il trattato, qui pubblicato per la prima volta in un’edizione complessiva e secondo criteri e metodologie moderne, si rivela una fonte importante e spesso unica per la nostra conoscenza della dottrina stoica della provvidenza divina, che viene discussa in chiave polemica in quasi tutte le porzioni in cui il contenuto sia individuabile. L’autore intende soprattutto negare che la provvidenza intervenga attivamente nelle vicende umane, perché ciò induce, in caso di eventi negativi, la paura del divino. Nel solco degli insegnamenti di Epicuro, per Filodemo, invece, l’origine di tutto, compreso il male, è ricercabile nella natura, senza che ci sia bisogno di chiamare in causa un’entità superiore.

Magical names and phrases are found in almost every magical text (papyri, lamellae, and gems) unearthed not only from Roman or Late Antique Egypt, but also from other places around the Mediterranean basin, and even further beyond (up to northern Britain or the Black Sea). Voces magicae represent a significant source for the multicultural linguistic identity of ritual texts in late antiquity, be it formularies or activated texts. Though experts from related fields, such as Egyptology and Semitic studies, have achieved noteworthy results in interpreting a significant number of the magical words, no complete glossary of voces magicae has yet been compiled, and one is clearly needed. In my paper, I will present the challenges of creating such a glossary. While many voces represent garbled words and phrases which are identifiable as deriving from an ancient language or script (Demotic, Coptic, Greek, Hebrew, Babylonian etc.), others are completely incomprehensible. Some of them are frequently attested, and even combined into fixed formulae, while others are used impromptu as individual units in ever-changing series. Yet, although the repetition of divine names, secret words, or of sequences of vowels and/or consonants may often seem random or of little consequence, there can be little doubt that the voces were, at least originally, intended to provide an encoded communication with gods and spirits. Studying the derivations and interpretations of magical words, the frequency of their occurrences and their intended effect (auditory, visual, or both) may help us crack this code and deepen our understanding of magical texts.

Para el científico social que investiga en archivos del período colonial español en Latinoamérica, la paleografía es una herramienta indispensable y fundamental. Se reúnen reflexiones y recomendaciones que introducen a la lectura de documentos de los siglos XVI y XVII, a los archivos históricos y a los manuales de aprendizaje disponibles.

Il volume riunisce i contributi sulle terrecotte figurate della Sicilia greca, analizzate dal punto di vista del contesto archeologico. L’obiettivo è mettere in luce il valore delle terrecotte, non come oggetti isolati, ma come elementi inseriti in insiemi coerenti e significativi. Considerate all’interno dei loro contesti di rinvenimento e in relazione agli altri materiali presenti, le figurine possono offrire nuove chiavi di lettura sui comportamenti rituali, funerari e domestici delle comunità greche di Sicilia.

This article examines the passive complicity of the Società Internazionale di Storia della Miniatura (SISM) – Napoli (International Society for the History of Miniature Painting) in the reputational attack against Prof. Carla Rossi, which unfolded between December 2022 and 2024. Based on archived emails, institutional communications, and a chronology of public actions, it documents how the Society's name and infrastructure were used—at times without authorisation, at times with institutional silence—to circulate defamatory content.
The study also presents evidence of prior academic collaboration between RECEPTIO and several SISM members, including seminars co-organised with the University of Cassino. The contrast between this documented cooperation and the subsequent inaction of the Society raises broader ethical questions about academic responsibility and institutional accountability.

La historia de 1'Església de Catalunya a la Baixa Edat Mitjana és una sola cosa amb la vida del poble catali, que es considerava, es tenia i es manifestava cristii davant les grans empreses col.lectives i en els afers quotidians, en les circumstancies de gloria i en els moments de cirsi, en la vida pública i en el secret del COI, en I'art i en el treball, en la predicació i la literatura. En una paraula, catali i cristia era tot ú: des de la santedat aschica a la satisfacció dels més corrents anhels humans. Descriure en una amplitud mínima, la historia de la comunitat de gent que d'obra i de paraula professava llur fe en Jesucrist, I'amor a Santa Maria la Mare de Déu, la devoció als sants, exigiria un ttebaii molt més extens. My ongoing work on a new edition of Philodemus, On Providence, has revealed that inventory numbers other than the PHerc. 1670 (the «midollo») belong to the scroll as well (viz. the «scorze» PHerc. 1577/1579, 1636, and 1100). But there are also pieces associated with PHerc. 1670 that actually do not belong to On Providence and therefore will be excluded from its edition. Some have been already recognized and attributed to PHerc. 1669 (Philodemus, On Rhetoric). In this paper, I will present three additional pieces that I have recently identified as parts of the book On Flattery by Philodemus preserved in PHerc. 1675.

The paper presents the results of the overall analysis of the 507 quotations from Terence in Priscian's grammatical works: the sources, the distribution in the different books of the Ars and in the minor works, the linguistic reasons of the quotations, the ways in which they are introduced and the degree of accuracy in their text are examined. The research also reveals useful data to clarify Priscian's working method and his influence on other
grammatical works composed in the East after the publication of the Ars (Eutyches' Ars de verbo, Fragmentum Bobiense de nomine et pronomine, perhaps also De verbo ad Severum).

Quasi tutto ciò che noi moderni leggiamo dei poeti italiani più antichi, dai Siciliani a Guinizelli a Guittone d’Arezzo, lo dobbiamo a un ridottissimo numero di manoscritti toscani, databili tra fine Duecento e inizio Trecento. Si tratta di tre celebri canzonieri siglati dai filologi L (il manoscritto Rediano 9 della Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana; di origine pisana), P (il Banco Rari 217, già Palatino 418, della Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze; di origine pistoiese) e V (il Vaticano Latino 3793, della Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana; di origine fiorentina). Tra essi, di gran lunga il più ricco di poesie è il codice Vaticano, che contiene copia di quasi mille componimenti poetici (canzoni e sonetti) e ci tramanda da solo i testi dei poeti fiorentini della generazione precedente a Dante Alighieri e a Guido Cavalcanti (Chiaro Davanzati, Monte Andrea, Rustico Filippi)....

This essay examines a selection of literary quotations from Books 1-2 of the Ars Prisciani (Sol. 1, 21; Catull. 2a, 3; Cic. inv. 1, 39; Ov. met. 14, 779-781; Plaut. Aul. 566), focusing on the presence of textual innovations in the archetype of Priscian’s work. Based on this analysis, it proposes a typological classification of such innovations, according to the stage of tradition at which the error likely occurred. The study highlights the specific challenges that each ‘type’ presents to the critical editor and suggests potential strategies for establishing the text. Finally, it discusses frg. Corinn. PMG 669, for which the collation of Priscian’s Carolingian witnesses allows correcting the vulgate text, which dates back to the Milanese printing of 1503.

Le présent article est issu de l'étude de 2 642 chartes de la période 1351-1500 conservées aux Archives de la République de Slovénie (Ljubljana), principalement émises ou reçues par les comtes de Celje, dernière famille régnante de quelque importance politique européenne ayant eu son siège dans l'actuelle Slovénie. Les actes produits dans la chancellerie de la cour de Celje sont pour la plupart dépourvus de décor ; mais des changements s'opèrent dans leur présentation parallèlement à l'ascension politique de la dynastie. Outre les exigences de l'auteur, l'apparence d'une charte dépend également du statut politique et social du bénéficiaire. Ainsi, à mesure que les comtes de Celje s'élèvent en dignité, l'aspect des chartes qu'ils reçoivent devient plus raffiné, notamment au moyen d'éléments de décor souvent semblables à ceux des manuscrits contemporains. Cela est particulièrement vrai des chartes produites vers le milieu du XVe siècle.

This chapter examines a late thirteenth-century French multi-text manuscript, Copenhagen, Kongelige Biblioteket, GKS 487 f°, notable for transmitting the sole surviving copy of Robert de Clari's La Conquête de Constantinople (ca. 1216). GKS 487 contains four other historical or didactic texts (Récits d'un ménestrel de Reims, Jean de Flixecourt's translation of Dares' De excidio Troiae, Pseudo-Turpin Chronicle, Descepline de Clergie). Drawing on the concept of the "assemblage" as formulated by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, this chapter argues that multi-text manuscripts like GKS 487 act politically in the world by configuring territories and shaping identities. In particular, GKS 487 is read as staking a claim to the lands of the eastern Mediterranean by writing history about—and thus "translating"—these lands in the documents of northern France. The view of history that emerges in this chapter is one where the multi-text manuscript is a powerful materialization of a given community's sense of its past-but only as it relates to its future. GKS 487 points insistently to its presumed place of production and usage, an abbey, Saint-Pierre de Corbie, which housed many of the relics Robert de Clari plundered from Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. The concluding argument is that the GKS 487-Abbey-relic assemblage claims institutional longevity based on its role to remediate the past.

The main purpose of this essay is to describe and present an up-to-date picture of the current state of knowledge concerning the 'Ravenna papyri'. This corpus, well known to many historians of Late Antiquity, runs by several interpretations between studies regarding its precise numerical, chronological, and typological definition. With the intention of recalibrating and thus consolidating this definition, the perspective adopted here is an archival one: the survey and analysis have included all the documents, written mainly (but not exclusively) on papyrus between the 5 th and the mid-9 th centuries, which have reached us through the archives of the archbishops of Ravenna. The work takes into account not only the original papyrus documents, but also those that have come down to us through later parchment copies. It also includes the numerous documents that have been transcribed, summarized, or simply mentioned in two sources that have hitherto been little used in discussions of the 'Ravenna papyri': Agnellus' Liber Pontificalis (9 th century) and the Breviarium Ecclesiae Ravennatis (10 th century). Reconstructed in this way, the corpus, consisting of 133 items and enclosing what we know of a large late antique and early medieval archive, offers new research insights and reveals itself as a historical source worthy of investigation. In this regard, the last part of the work also investigates the possible moments that led to the creation and changes of this archive, distinguishing between a slower 'time of pious donations' and a more accelerated 'time of imperial privileges', the latter being responsible for a real change of course in the history of the archive in the late 6 th century. Finally, the discourse is completed by an appendix with a descriptive list of all the items that make up the corpus.

This short course is part of the London International Palaeography School (Institute of English Studies School of Advanced Study, University of London).

The "Introduction to Medieval Spanish Palaeography" online course offers a comprehensive introduction to the evolution of medieval scripts in the Iberian Peninsula, tracing the region’s distinctive palaeographical journey from the Early to Late Middle Ages. It begins by exploring the transition from indigenous writing systems, such as the Visigothic script, to the adoption and adaptation of broader European styles like Caroline minuscule. Special emphasis is placed on the uniquely peninsular forms of this script, which reflect the peninsula’s cultural complexity and the individuality of its medieval kingdoms.

As the course moves into the later medieval period, students will examine the rise and dominance of Gothic scripts in Spain, including both documentary and book hands. We will focus on their regional and functional diversity, analysing the characteristics that distinguish Spanish Gothic varieties from their European counterparts. Students will also investigate the relationship between script styles and manuscript types, degrees of formality, and broader production contexts.

Throughout the course, learners will engage with digital images of manuscripts, gaining hands-on experience in script identification and palaeographical analysis. By the end, participants will be familiar with the major stages in the development of Iberian scripts and able to recognise key features of a range of Iberian script varieties.

This course is suitable for complete beginners. Basic Latin/Spanish would be a plus, but it is not required.

As part of the Introduction to Medieval Spanish Palaeography course, my session offered an in-depth exploration of documentary Gothic scripts used across the Iberian Peninsula between the 12th and 15th centuries. Focusing on regional varieties from the Crowns of Castile and Aragon, it addressed the evolution, classification, and graphic diversity of these scripts in relation to political, institutional, and cultural contexts. Particular attention was paid to the chancery’s role in shaping script forms, and to the distinctions between administrative and private documentary practices. Participants engaged with original manuscript images to analyse script features, develop palaeographical skills, and understand the social dynamics behind graphic change.

En el noroeste peninsular, el ciclo escriturario gótico se desarrolló con cierta
demora, hasta bien entrado el siglo XIII, pues la realidad gráfica visigótica perduró hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XII y su tránsito hacia la escritura carolina no se inició hasta mediados de esta centuria. El presente estudio pretende situar las fronteras de la escritura en la documentación producida, consumida y/o conservada en Santa María de Oia (Pontevedra) para los siglos XII-XIII; conocer las distintas fases vividas en el proceso de sustitución de la escritura visigótica por la escritura carolina, luego la natural evolución gótica y, por último, su derivación cursiva.

La intenció d'aquest treball, segons que indica el títol, és la de fer certes precisions entorn als plantejaments d'una visita pastoral. El tema no constitueix, per tant, l'estudi de contingut d'un registre de Visites, ni l'anàlisi completa d'una visita pastoral, sinó tan sols la reflexió entorn a una idea més delimitada, més concreta: hom tracta de constatar i afirmar l'existència d'uns plantejaments de fons, d'una intencionalitat clara en la realització de la visita pastoral a la diòcesi de Girona entre els anys 1420-1423, portada a terme pel bisbe Andreu Bertran. Aquestes intencions constitueixen, al meu parer, un lligam entre la visita i les idees prereformistes de certes jerarquies eclesiàstiques d'Europa, al segle XV. La visita pastoral esmentada omple el contingut de tres registres, el P. 16, P. 17 i P. 18, que es conserven a l'Arxiu Diocesà de Girona i que contenen el testimoni escrit d'aquella visita pastoral del bisbe Bertran arreu de la diòcesi. This article examines Bolle Willum Luxdorph's Latin translations of two Anacreontic poems and situates them within the broader European and Danish reception of Anacreontic poetry in the 18th century. It discusses Luxdorph’s textual sources, the literary and metrical choices he made, and whether Luxdorph considered the poems to be genuine or not.

In this article, a Latin composition by Hans Christian Andersen is presented and published for the first time. This work, the only Latin composition preserved by Andersen, was written during the fairytale writer's school years between October 1822 and October 1828. It consists of a short text in Danish, written down by Andersen from oral dictation, along with his partial translation into Latin. The composition contains numerous corrections by both Andersen and a teacher. Unlike most of Andersen's Danish compositions, this work was not graded. The identity of the correcting teacher and the specific time and place of Andersen's writing have not proved possible to determine.

Il Libro de cosina di Martino de Rossi “comasco” è ritenuto un caposaldo della letteratura gastronomica italiana e Martino è considerato l’artefice di una vera e propria rivoluzione culturale nell’arte della gastronomia. Quest’opera infatti è considerata lo spartiacque che segna il passaggio dalla cucina medievale a quella moderna sperimentando nuove commistioni di gusto, un corretto uso delle spezie e l’utilizzo di nuovi sistemi di cottura rispetto ai precedenti. Martino inoltre fu il primo cuoco a considerare i colori primari degli ingredienti come parte integrante della preparazione anticipando di secoli l’attenzione odierna verso l’aspetto estetico.

Il testo è tramandato da cinque soli manoscritti, databili tra il 1465 e il primo decennio del 1500 conservati in cinque biblioteche del mondo. Il codice più completo, con 287 ricette, è quello custodito presso la Biblioteca civica di Riva del Garda (segnatura F-MS-1), di cui la casa editrice Nova Charta di Venezia ha commissionato il restauro e realizzato la riproduzione in facsimile, nell'ambito del progetto Salviamo un codice, promosso dalla stessa casa editrice. L'opera è accompagnata da un Commentario, curato da Leonardo Granata, contenente contributi di approfondimento di diversi autori sul Libro de cosina e il suo autore.

This paper offers three case studies on 'minitexts' added to eighthand ninth-century manuscripts and suggests that such informal interventions need to be recognized as part of a communication process between readers, scribes and their books in early medieval culture. The additions, comprising a vernacular poem, canon law, epistolary and homiletic material and kinglists suggest an association of ideas between main text and added minitexts. Yet they also expose a variety of sources for the minitexts, from a written record of oral memory, a summary of one aspect of a well-established text as in the case of Isidore of Seville's Etymologiae, and the reproduction of papal rulings which were part of another widely-circulated collection of canon law, to some interesting chronological summaries which appear to reflect a reader's engagement with the entire codex in which the minitext was inserted. They indicate too how much we can learn in general about early medieval intellectual culture from pursuing both the engagements with knowledge represented in readers' additions to their manuscripts, and the questions they raise.

A presente dissertacao tem como objetivo principal compreender o que o filosofo Friedrich Nietzsche chama de ideais asceticos e de niilismo. Essa dissertacao e o resultado de uma pesquisa que tenta mostrar isso especificamente a partir da obra Genealogia da moral. Segue-se buscando identificar e caracterizar este assunto tambem em outras obras deste pensador e em obras de alguns especialistas de Nietzsche. Saint Hyppolytus of Rome is known throughout history as an early christian writer with a fine sense for the orthodoxy, a presbyter and bishop of the Roman Church. There is no preserved information about his life. From chapter IX of his "Φιλοσοφούμενα", we learn only that during Roman bishop Zephyrinus (198 -217), St. Hippolytus held a position in the Roman Church, and it would have been most likely a presbyter. This position and ministry became the occasion and reason for the schism in the Roman Church, in which St. Hippolytus would play a major role. His ministry turned into a struggle with the heretical teachings of Noetum and Sabellius, and against the bishops of Rome. He proved to be an exceptional theologian, educated, and a unique church writer. In 354, on the basis of the Liber Pontificalis, he was officially recognized as a saint and his name was inscribed in the official Roman martyrology. In the Orthodox Church the memory of St. Holy Martyr Hippolytus, Bishop of Rome (+ 235 г.), is celebrated on January 30, and in the Western Roman Church on August 13.

This article introduces the Measurement Tool, a semi-automated digital instrument designed to systematically collect data on the physical and layout features of papyri, such as size, margins, line height, interlinear space, kollesis and kollemata. Developed within the EVWRIT project, the tool facilitates precise measurements from digital images. By integrating digital methodologies with traditional scholarship, this study highlights the significance of quantitative approaches in understanding the interplay between textual layout, document functionality, and administrative practices in antiquity, briefly introducing a case-study on the evolution of the line height and interlinear space from the Roman to the Byzantine period. The article also discusses the tool's limitations, and future prospects for enhancing the study of ancient manuscripts.
