Lexical Variation

This study applies Milroy's Weak Tie Theory to examine the variation of military jargon within the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) at Kaduna NAF Base. It investigates specialised terms and slang usage across social classes, focusing on interactions between military personnel and civilians. A checklist method gathered responses from 87 participants on 18 key lexical items. Findings reveal differing military jargon usage among officers, airmen, and civilians, highlighting a linguistic divide shaped by social connections. Civilians interacting closely with airmen adopt informal military language, showcasing blended communication styles. This research enhances our comprehension of how weak ties among social groups foster linguistic change. By addressing language-related dynamics, this study has practical implications for understanding communication patterns within institutional settings. The findings contribute to the development of effective communication strategies at play in military contexts.

Los estudios sobre morfología léxica del español desde la perspectiva de la variación dialectal que parten de datos geolingüísticos no son demasiado numerosos (Buenafuentes en prensa) y, además, sus resultados evidencian un mayor interés por ciertos procesos de formación de palabras que por otros. Sin duda, la sufijación apreciativa es, con diferencia, la que ha merecido mayor atención desde esta óptica (Uritani y Berrueta 1989, Calderón y García-Godoy 2025), mientras que apenas hay trabajos que analicen exclusivamente la composición desde el punto de vista dialectal a partir de estos materiales geolingüísticos.
Para contribuir a llenar este vacío, el objetivo principal de este póster es analizar los procesos de composición del español, tanto léxicos como sintagmáticos (Bustos Gisbert 1986, Val Álvaro 1999, Buenafuentes 2020, NGLE 2009, Marqueta Gracia 2021), a partir de los materiales que ofrecen los atlas lingüísticos regionales del español. El análisis se llevará a cabo a partir del examen de 950 mapas contenidos en el Corpus de los Altas Lingüísticos (CORPAT) (Julià 2022), que se estudiarán desde la perspectiva formal, semántica, diatópica y conceptual. Para desarrollar la investigación, se parte de la hipótesis de que, a pesar de que la composición es un procedimiento mucho menos productivo que la derivación, según se afirma en la mayoría de los manuales sobre morfología, los datos de los atlas pueden ayudar a matizar esa diferencia y a demostrar que es un procedimiento que presenta vitalidad y variación dialectal, al poner de manifiesto su relación directa con la lengua popular y rural que dimana de los atlas lingüísticos.
Los resultados de este estudio aportarán nuevos conocimientos sobre la frecuencia de este proceso morfológico en la lengua popular y contribuirán a proporcionar una nueva visión sobre la explotación de los materiales geolectales para el estudio de la morfología léxica.

forma se evidencia: por un lado, los condicionantes del cambio -respecto a la tonicidad de la sílaba y el contexto fónico-; y por otro se concluye que son la comarca oriental de La Mancha, y una de sus localidades: Villacañas, las que poseen el mayor porcentaje de despalatalizaciones de la provincia. La primera evidencia certifica solo en parte la validez de la distribución propuesta por Moya Corral (1993) y la segunda sirve para clarificar la extensión geográfica del fenómeno en Toledo, estudiada parcialmente en la bibliografía (Moreno Fernández, 1988 y Molina Martos, 1998). En el marco de una investigación sobre disponibiiidad léxica en escolares preuniversitarios y a partir de una muestra de 246 alumnos de la provincia de Castellón (España), el presente estudio se detiene en el análisis de la eventual influencia ejercida por factores de adscripción lingüística, como la lengua materna y dominante de los hablantes en esta región bilingüe española, así como la posible interacción con otros factores sociales relevantes. Los resultados genera- les del análisis confirman los dos extremos, de manera que, en primer lugar, los alumnos castellanohablantes muestran en términos globales un léxico disponible más amplio y variado que sus compañeros valencianohablantes. Pese a ello, algunos parámetros sociales complementarios trastocan tales difercncias de partida en algunas intersecciones y, además, lo hacen en dos direcciones divergentes: o bien ensanchando las generales enre casteilanohablantes y valencianohablantes, o bien, por el contrario, neutralizándolas. Asimismo es interesante observar que, en ocasiones, un mismo factor (v. gr., el sexo) puede actuar en ambos sentidos en distintos subgrupos sociales.

La lexicalización del significado de los diminutivos es un tipo de neología muy productiva en el español antiguo, principalmente en el periodo clásico. Consiste en la multiplicación del léxico a partir de bases preexistentes, en situaciones de oralidad e inmediatez comunicativa. Entre los sufijos diminutivos, –illo es el nominalizador más rentable en la historia del español, especialmente en los dominios léxicos de los objetos, la fauna y la flora. Los usos no prototípicos evidencian distintos niveles de lexicalización: el nivel 1 corresponde a los diminutivos de variedad o especialidad; el nivel 2 se alcanza con los usos metafóricos y metonímicos; y en el nivel 3 se sitúan los cambios léxicos por elipsis y recategorización.

RESUMEN Los estudios realizados sobre el habla de Granada a lo largo de las ultimas decadas han permitido conocer profundos procesos de cambio que, si bien en ocasiones parecen afectar a aspectos puramente fonicos (simples alternancias de variantes), en otros casos actuan sobre estructuras complejas y ocasionan alteraciones de orden fonologico. En los ultimos 60 anos hemos asistido en Granada a modificaciones que han dado al traste con los rasgos que tradicionalmente conformaban la imagen linguistica de esta ciudad. Se trata en todos los casos de cambios que apuntan hacia la convergencia del habla de Granada con el estandar nacional. This study investigates the influence of social variation on English language learning within the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), focusing on how social variables-such as class, gender, educational attainment, and duration of stay-affect language acquisition and communicative performance among military personnel and civilian staff. Drawing upon Basil Bernstein's Code Theory, the research explores the distinction between restricted and elaborated language codes in the hierarchical, regimented context of the Kaduna NAF Base. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were gathered from 200 participants through structured questionnaires. The responses were quantitatively analysed using tabular presentations and single-factor ANOVA tests to evaluate statistical significance across key social categories. The findings revealed that individuals of higher social status, particularly commissioned officers, demonstrated greater proficiency in Standard English, attributable to enhanced access to formal education and professional training. Duration of stay at military installations significantly impacted language development, with longer residency correlating with higher linguistic competence. Moreover, the quality of instructional personnel emerged as a vital determinant of language learning outcomes, especially for individuals engaged in structured educational programmes within the base. Gender-based disparities also surfaced, with societal biases favouring male linguistic competence, particularly in military contexts characterised by patriarchal structures and occupational role expectations. This study offers fresh perspectives in military sociolinguistic research by underscoring the implications of social hierarchy, institutional training, and cultural norms on language acquisition. It further advances scholarship in Code Theory by demonstrating how elaborated and restricted codes are unequally distributed among different strata within a controlled, professional community. The work advocates for equitable access to language instruction, gender-sensitive policy reforms, and the promotion of inclusive communicative practices within military settings. These insights are crucial for informing language policy in structured environments and improving overall communication efficiency among diverse occupational and social groups within the armed forces.

This paper presents a corpus-based quantitative linguistic analysis of the lexical density (LD) and readability of selected short stories. LD is a key aspect of text readability, and this study posits that the content words in the selected short stories are used to measure the level of LD and readability. Lexical density is a quantitative measure used in corpus linguistics to analyze the complexity of language in texts. Specifically, it investigates the ratio of content words, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, to the total word count in various text types. This study employed a quantitative research method to manually examine the levels of LD and readability in six selected short stories. For the theoretical framework, Eggins' (2004) equation was used to measure LD, while Khamahani's (2015) framework was applied to evaluate readability. The selected stories include The Hare and the Tortoise, Lazy John, The Elephants and the Ants, The Dog and the Bone, The Thirsty Crow, and The Fox and the Grapes. During data analysis, content words were separated from function words and prepared for the application of the equations. The results revealed that the level of LD in The Hare and the Tortoise (50.66%), Lazy John (53.3%), and The Elephants and the Ants (51.02%) was high, indicating that these stories are lexically dense. Additionally, their readability levels were classified as hard. In contrast, The Dog and the Bone (47.61%), The Thirsty Crow (45.9%), and The Fox and the Grapes (47.36%) had lower LD levels and were classified as easy to read. Among the lexical categories, nouns were the most frequently used, appearing 95 times compared to other content words in the selected short stories.

Se trata del primer estudio dedicado exclusivamente al habla culta dominicana cuyos datos han sido obtenidos mediante grabaciones magnetofónicas mediante los cuales se ofrece una versión cuantificada de la conducta lingüística en las personas del nivel sociocultural alto. Se descubre aquí que en cuanto a la pronunciacion de la /-s/ en posición final de sílaba y de palabra no es la aspiración faríngea /-h/ la que predomina, sino la elisión completa o cero fonético /-Ø/. Resumen: El presente trabajo analiza el origen del término γυῖα y sus posibles cognados dentro de la lengua griega, con el objetivo de determinar los procesos cognitivo-asociativos involucrados y ofrecer una explicación semánticamente verosímil a su desarrollo. Para ello, en primer lugar, se precisará el referente anatómico al que este término aludía, con especial atención al griego homérico. Posteriormente, tras el análisis de los posibles cognados de γυῖα, se indagará sobre el significado original de la raíz *guH-, demostrando que estos términos partirían de la noción de «curvo» y tendrían su origen en una metonimia basada en su forma. En consecuencia, se evidenciará que γυῖα se referiría originalmente a las rodillas, desde donde, mediante una sinécdoque, pasaría a aplicarse a las piernas en su totalidad-un desarrollo paralelo al que encontramos en ἀγκών 'codo' y ἀγκάλη 'brazo' en el ámbito de las extremidades superiores-. The word parkade 'parking garage' is widely recognized as a good example of a twentieth-century Canadianism, on account both of its origin and of its frequency. This article draws on newspaper evidence from the United States and Canada to trace the origins and development of parkade. It demonstrates that a form parkade 'strip of grassed or planted land in a city' (from park 'urban green space') is attested in the United States from 1911 onward and that a form parkade 'parking lot' (from park 'leave a vehicle in a designated area, at the roadside, etc.') is attested in the United States from the 1930s onward, developing the sense 'parking garage' by 1950 in the United States and 1952 in Canada. Neither word parkade is therefore of Canadian origin. The article explains how parkade came to be used at such a higher frequency in western Canada than in its country of origin and ends with a note on the use of the word in southern Africa.

This paper presents results from a corpus-based study investigating lexical variation in BSL. An earlier study investigating variation in BSL numeral signs found that younger signers were using a decreasing variety of regionally distinct variants, suggesting that levelling may be taking place. Here, we report findings from a larger investigation looking at regional lexical variants for colours, countries, numbers and UK placenames elicited as part of the BSL Corpus Project. Age, school location and language background were significant predictors of lexical variation, with younger signers using a more levelled variety. This change appears to be happening faster in particular sub-groups of the deaf community (e.g., signers from hearing families). Also, we find that for the names of some UK cities, signers from outside the region use a different sign than those who live in the region.

Sign language corpus data are useful to study phonological and lexical variation. The focus in studies of lexical variation has often been on the regional distribution and age variation of competing variants (e.g. McKee & McKee 2011, Stamp et al. 2014). When studying variation in corpus data, it is helpful not only to look at the distribution of each single variant candidate but to contrast all synonymous candidates of a variant cluster as well. Hanke et al. 2017 explored the possibility to detect regional and age variations in lexeme clusters that share a meaning as indicated by the same gloss name but differ in form. Clusterings on the basis of gloss names can only be a first step of analysis. The findings suggest two further directions of research that will be explored in this paper. Este estudio explora la formación de plurales en préstamos léxicos del espa-
ñol de la ciudad capital del estado de Puebla (México) a partir de un cuestio-
nario con 64 ítems. Con base en el análisis de una variable dependiente y de
variables independientes sociales y lingüísticas, concluyo que i) la variable
nivel de estudios resulta determinante exclusivamente para la elección del
plural que involucra el morfema cero, ii) las variables palabra y hablante
son las dos que resultan significativas para la elección de todas las formas
disponibles para crear plurales (ø, –s y –es) y iii) el español poblano no sigue
las tendencias de variación en los plurales de préstamos prototípicamente
considerados como vacilantes.

This research paper aims to gauge the lexical complexity entrenched in the abstracts of Algerian students via artificial intelligence. It represents a comparative study directed toward measuring the lexical density and variation manifested in the abstracts of PhD theses and master dissertations through the use of a developed language analytic parser. A retrospective design was utilised during the study since the addressed independent dichotomous variable (theses and dissertations abstracts) and dependent variables (lexical density and variation) were not manipulated or controlled by the researcher. The data collection procedure was based on the random retrieval of 96 abstracts from the Algerian platform of theses. The analysis involved the use of the web-based lexical complexity analyser (LCA) devised by Ai and Lu (2010) in processing data. Five proxy measures were employed, namely: LD, NDW, NDW-50, NDW-ER50 and NDW-ES50. Multiple inferential statistical tests were employed based on the incorporation of SPSS version 28 as a tool for statistical analysis. A probability value of .05 (p ≤ .05) was set as the threshold of statistical significance for rejecting the null hypothesis. The results indicated the presence of a negligible difference between the lexical density of theses' and dissertations' abstracts. More importantly, the mean scores of lexical variation rooted in abstracts of PhD students were significantly greater than those of master students. The four proxy measures used to determine the lexical variation of students' writing showed that the academic level of students has a substantial effect on the degree of lexical variation. Further studies are still required in the context of Algeria to reach more conclusive results about the relationship between the academic level of students vis-à-vis the lexical richness of writing production.

Variation, preferences, and subregularities can be derived from one and the same grammar if we assume that grammars are partial orderings of violable constraints. This is the claim defended in this dissertation. The argument is based on detailed analyses of the Finnish nominal declension.

Resulta ciertamente difícil analizar los diccionarios de sinónimos sin tener en cuenta el propio concepto de sinonimia, pues se trata de un problema metalingüístico ampliamente discutido durante siglos. En general, somos conscientes de la mayor utilidad de los repertorios contrastivos, pues los acumulativos presentan escaso valor codificador. Sin embargo, durante mucho tiempo se han catalogado voces desde la negación de la sinonimia y, por lo tanto, se han intentado establecer las diferencias pertinentes entre las piezas léxicas, por lo que se cae en la contradicción a la hora de denominar este tipo de obras; esto se percibe a lo largo de la historia. Conviene, en todo caso, plantear la función básicamente normativa del diccionario, en relación con las demandas de los usuarios, al margen de consideraciones relativas al sistema de la lengua. En cuanto a la antonimia, es llamativo que ocupe un lugar poco destacado en el ámbito lexicográfico.

El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar desde una perspectiva lexicológica y sociolingüística los indigenismos encontrados en el habla del español de Puebla a partir de su registro en el corpus Preseea-Puebla. Analizaremos las características semánticas y formales del léxico de herencia de las lenguas originarias del territorio mexicano en el español de Puebla (su origen etimológico, las áreas temáticas a la que pertenecen y los procesos de formación de palabras de los que es partícipe), además de su frecuencia de uso y dispersión a partir de las variables preestratificatorias de la muestra (sexo, edad y nivel de instrucción formal). Como veremos a lo largo de la investigación, a pesar de la diversidad lingüística de la región, el náhuatl es la lengua predominante.

Many words that according to the dictionaries have just one meaning are in fact understood in different ways by different speakers. In this article we deal with Russian nouns denoting everyday life objects which are subject to much variation by age, gender, and region and are poorly described by the existing dictionaries. We report the results of a multilevel survey, propose some possible metrics of word knowledge and show to what extent the words we studied are known among a certain population. We also claim that different speakers possess different sets of meanings for each word, propose ways to discover the distribution patterns for these sets and introduce the notion of disperse polysemy. This book explores a range of pathways in the evolution and variation of the Spanish language across different communicative domains related to football. From press conferences to the language used by analysts and fans, from journalistic reports to media broadcasts and social networks, and from the very name of the sport to regional variants within Spanish football vocabulary, Partido a partido. La lengua del fútbol addresses a variety of linguistic research topics. These include lexical, discursive, and pragmatic phenomena, as well as diachronic, variational, sociopragmatic, comparative, and intralingual translation-based approaches. The book brings together nine papers, each with distinct aims, scopes, and analytical techniques. Despite this diversity, all the papers focus on the linguistic peculiarities of historical changes and contemporary variations in the Spanish language (across more than one country), which can be observed – though not exclusively – in the language of football. Although exploratory in nature, this volume encourages readers to view the communicative dynamics inspired by football as more than merely ‘mundane’ or ‘ephemeral’. While some phenomena arise solely within the football community under specific circumstances, certain linguistic innovations shaped by football references may eventually extend to other thematic domains. In sum, this book offers readers an overview of the features and complexities that characterise the Spanish language. Like football itself, these features spark interest and foster discussion among specialists.

La digitalización de los atlas lingüísticos tradicionales, publicados en el marco del método de la geografía lingüística, aporta importantes beneficios al conocimiento de la lengua y de la cultura de un territorio. El traslado de las informaciones geolectales de los atlas a bases de datos espaciales constituye un complemento a los mapas y permite estudiar la información que contienen desde diferentes perspectivas. En este trabajo, con el fin de mostrar una de las facetas de los atlas lingüísticos en formato digital, se presenta el estudio de los datos del concepto ‘cantero de pan’ en español europeo. Los resultados obtenidos ejemplifican un modelo de aprovechamiento y explotación de los datos geolingüísticos en contraste con datos procedentes de la red social Twitter que solo es posible desarrollar desde los materiales digitalizados en bases de datos relacionales espaciales.

Entity normalization is a common strategy to resolve ambiguities by mapping all the synonym mentions to a single concept identifer in standard terminology. Normalizing medical entities is challenging, especially for languages other than English, where lexical variation is considerably under-represented. Here, we report a new linguistic resource for medical entity normalization in Spanish. We applied a UMLS-based medical lexicon (MedLexSp) to automatically normalize mentions from 2000 medical referrals of the Chilean Waiting List Corpus. Three medical students manually revised the automatic normalization. The inter-coder agreement was computed, and the distribution of concepts, errors, and linguistic sources of variation was analyzed. The automatic method normalized 52% of the mentions, compared to 91% after manual revision. The lowest agreement between automatic and automatic-manual normalization was observed for Finding, Disease, and Procedure entities. Errors in normalization were associated with ortho-typographic, semantic, and grammatical linguistic inadequacies, mainly of the hyponymy/hyperonymy, polysemy/metonymy, and acronym-abbreviation types. This new resource can enrich dictionaries and lexicons with new mentions to improve the functioning of modern entity normalization methods. The linguistic analysis ofers insight into the sources of lexical variety in the Spanish clinical environment related to error generation using lexicon-based normalization methods. New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) 1 is estimated to be used by 3,000-5,000 Deaf people in New Zealand, with a larger group of just over 20,000 New Zealanders able to "have a conversation about a lot of everyday things" in the language. 2 Prior to the development of interpreting services in the 1980s and acceptance of NZSL in education from the 1990s, NZSL was used mainly for communication in private, social domains, which restricted the size and fields of lexicon. Linguistic documentation of NZSL began in the mid-1980s (Collins-Ahlgren 1989, Levitt 1986). Early lexicographic efforts culminated in the print Dictionary of New Zealand Sign Language (Kennedy et al. 1997) followed by a Concise Dictionary of New Zealand Sign Language comprising the 2,000 most frequent signs. These print dictionaries were amongst the first corpus-based signed language dictionaries that used data from signed language as the source of lexicon rather than being a translational glossary from the spoken language. Lexical documentation was based on the systematic analysis of video recorded, mainly spontaneous discourse around elicited / guided topics. An extensive community validation process was undertaken before signs (including variants) were entered in the dictionary. The existence of these dictionaries contributed to legal recognition of New Zealand Sign Language in 2006. Official language status and disability access measures have subsequently made NZSL more visible in public domains. Deaf NZSL users increasingly participate in wider social, political, occupational and educational domains, leading to rapid lexical development of NZSL in these fields. This paper examines the Latin formula debitum reddere ('settling a debt'), found in both pagan and Christian inscriptions with the meaning of 'dying'. In this formula, death is depicted as the fulfilment of a legal obligation, a debt typically owed to Nature, Fate or the Christian God. Although the primary focus is epigraphic, both inscriptions and literary sources are analysed to trace the origin and development of this metaphor, which is interpreted in light of its Stoic philosophical background. The paper also explores other related formulae with similar meanings (e.g. uitam/spiritum/animam reddere), possible folk-etymological associations (such as obitum reddere and uotum reddere in funerary contexts), and further developments of the concept of dying as the return of a borrowed existence (including the absolute use of reddere to mean 'dying' and the use of redditio as a synonym for 'death'). Several references suggest that the metaphor debitum reddere may have been particularly popular in Roman Africa.

Dealing with agglutinative languages like Oriya, Morph-Synthesizer plays a vital role for machine translation system in order to increase the output accuracy level. To build a morph-synthesizer for a language, it is necessary to take care of the morphological peculiarities of the language, specifically in Machine Translation (MT). In this paper, we describe our work on rule-based Oriya morph-synthesizer. Here we have concentrated only on the synthesis of the Nouns. Noun synthesis in Oriya depends upon the feature (animacy and honorific) and demands the semantic account and behaviors of the noun-endings.

Generating gazetteers, creating maps, and processing data for statistical analysis are common tasks in the study of place names. Here we present a series of search and report functions (lists, cartography, and graphs) as well as examples of exploratory analyses obtained with the scripts specially designed to work with superestratistic toponyms from Gallaecia.

Los fenómenos fónicos de variación dialectal en español se han venido tratando en manuales, en obras de referencia o en artículos científicos (Zamora Vicente 1979, Alvar 1996a, 1996b, Quilis 1993, RAE-ASALE 2011 o Moreno Fernández 2020). Habitualmente, hay una cierta coincidencia en cuanto a los fenómenos que conforman los rasgos fonético-fonológicos de las distintas variedades del español de España y estos son los que tradicionalmente se transmiten cuando se quieren describir estas variedades. Los atlas lingüísticos regionales, por su naturaleza, aportan datos relevantes para este tipo de descripciones y, en ocasiones, delatan procesos de variación y cambio que divergen respecto a lo que la bibliografía ha establecido. De este modo, suponen una fuente valiosísima de información que permite contextualizar, precisar y servir de acicate a análisis que pueden llegar a cuestionar las caracterizaciones tradicionales de los dialectos del español europeo. Un ejemplo de ello lo constituye el rotacismo de /l/, habitualmente asociado a las variedades meridionales. Se trata de un fenómeno de debilitamiento consonántico que se ha advertido en habla espontánea en hablantes que no responden al perfil meridional (Rost 2016, 2024). Los datos contenidos en los atlas hacen posible trazar una nueva panorámica del proceso y establecer su dimensión.

Eesti vahekeele korpuse (EVKK) materjalide põhjal on kindlaks tehtud, et eesti keele õppijale valmistab kõige sagedamini raskusi sõnajärg, nt *Majandus kiiresti arenes. Artiklis kirjeldatakse eesti keele sõnajärjevigade tuvastamise võimalusi, meetodit ja tulemusi. Kõigepealt antakse lühiülevaade olemasolevate automaatsete vealeidjate tööpõhimõtetest ning kirjeldatakse Tallinna Ülikoolis VAKO-projekti raames välja töötatud sõnajärjevealeidja prototüüpi 1. Sõnajärjevealeidja on statistikapõhine programm, mille tööpõhimõte sarnaneb teatud määral n-grammidega. Programmi aluseks on võetud lause sõnajärje seisukohalt üheksa olulise lauseliikme korrektsed sõnajärjemallid, mille regulaarne ilmnemine keelekasutuses moodustab sõnajärjemustreid. A recuperação da referência de topônimos atribuídos em épocas mais pretéritas da Cidade de Belo Horizonte coloca desafios metodológicos, uma vez que é realizada fundamentalmente através de dedução. A ausência de parâmetros bem definidos para esse processo costuma resultar em análises pouco sistemáticas, muito dependentes da intuição do pesquisador. Discute-se aqui adoção de estratégias hermenêuticas baseadas em princípios de estruturação da toponímia urbana segundo a abordagem de toponímia histórica proposta por Cambraia e Seabra (2024). A aplicação prática dessa abordagem é ilustrada tomando como base os princípios da unicidade, da unidade temática e da pertinência, bem como os critérios da cronologia e da saliência.

El objetivo del presente capítulo es la presentación de algunas características y funcionalidades del Corpus de los atlas lingüísticos (CORPAT), una herramienta informática en la que se almacenan datos procedentes de los atlas lingüísticos regionales del español europeo con el fin de conservar el patrimonio lingüístico que contienen; de servir como fuente de divulgación de la variación y la riqueza lingüística; y de complementar los datos procedentes de corpus textuales y obras lexicográficas que permitan ampliar las investigaciones sobre el cambio lingüístico y la historia de la lengua española.

Los atlas lingüísticos del español constituyen las primeras fuentes de datos que nos permiten documentar muestras de lengua oral recogidas mediante criterios científicos. En los inicios de la aplicación del método geolingüístico a las lenguas de la península ibérica, no todas las encuestas se llevaron a cabo con apoyo tecnológico de forma sistemática (González González 1992: 175); por ello, las transcripciones georreferenciadas de estas obras son las únicas informaciones que han permanecido de las entrevistas que se realizaron.
En el ámbito del español europeo, el análisis, la explotación y la difusión que se ha hecho de los datos de la geografía lingüística en su conjunto ha sido escaso debido a las limitaciones que ha impuesto la consulta y el formato de publicación de los atlas. La digitalización y sistematización de estos materiales es indiscutiblemente necesaria para poder paliar esta situación. En el caso del Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (ALPI), este proceso se inició hace más de una década en el CSIC (García Mouton 2017, 2022). Sin embargo, en la geolingüística regional, para la que el español dispone de un importante número de atlas, se ha contado con escasas iniciativas de digitalización hasta la creación del Corpus de los atlas lingüísticos (CORPAT, www.corpat.es). Esta herramienta, de consulta libre en la red, categoriza y repertoriza las formas lingüísticas de los atlas regionales del español en una base de datos relacional georreferenciada.
Los objetivos de este corpus son, por un lado, poner a disposición de la comunidad científica los datos de los atlas regionales para que puedan ser estudiados desde múltiples perspectivas y, por otro, conservar y dar a conocer el patrimonio lingüístico de la España de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Ello permitirá examinar con detalle los fenómenos desde una perspectiva tanto sincrónica como diacrónica, ya que, además de facilitar la obtención de una foto del perfil lingüístico de las zonas de encuesta en el momento en el que se realizaron las entrevistas, también se podrá comparar la información con los datos del ALPI y de otros corpus orales más recientes para observar y analizar con detalle el cambio lingüístico a través del espacio.
Actualmente, este corpus se encuentra en un estadio inicial de desarrollo y es posible consultar parcialmente algunos de los datos que contiene. En el póster que se presenta, se expondrán las características del corpus (Julià 2023), la metodología (Rost et al. 2022), los problemas y dificultades que han surgido en las primeras fases de trabajo (Blecua et al. 2024), los primeros resultados (Julià 2022, Gutiérrez 2023, Terrón 2023) y las líneas futuras de investigación derivadas de su explotación como herramienta para el estudio de la lengua oral (Alonso 2023).

Studies suggest that not only words per se but also surrounding contexts play significant roles in foreign language vocabulary retention. This study investigated how different conditions of lexical and contextual emotional valence differently affect foreign language vocabulary retention. The target words were either positive (LexVal+), neutral (LexVal=), or negative (LexVal-) in meaning. Each visually enhanced target word was embedded in a sentence either positive (CtxVal+), neutral (CtxVal=), or negative (CtxVal-) in meaning. Sentences with different combinations of lexical valence and contextual valence were presented in the Study Session, which were later incidentally recalled in the Test Session. It was revealed that positive and negative words were remembered more often than neutral words and that negative contexts resulted in better retention of the embedded words than neutral contexts. These findings are in accordance with the predictions of the emotionally enhanced memory, the Emotion-Involved Processing Hypothesis, and the role of affect in the Modular Cognition Framework. Further, even if the target item is not emotional, embedding it in emotional context may result in better retention, a finding with potential pedagogical implications. Interestingly, words embedded in emotionally congruent contexts were not learned better than those in incongruent contexts, a finding contrary to expectation. The result may be explainable via the Deep Epistemic Emotion Hypothesis, calling for more empirical study.

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar a variação lexical do item camomila no Estado do Paraná com base no banco de dados do Projeto Atlas Linguístico do Brasil – ALiB. Parte-se da hipótese de que a variação de nome para designar essa planta de grande importância sociocultural no estado coincide, até certo ponto, com a delimitação das subáreas dialetais do Paraná apontadas por Koch (2000) e Altenhofen (2002) em conformidade com variantes linguísticas do Atlas Linguístico-Etnográfico da Região Sul do Brasil – ALERS. O corpus do estudo é composto pelas respostas obtidas a partir da questão 41 do Questionário Semântico-Lexical do ALiB, por 68 informantes em 17 localidades no Paraná. Conclusion: • Looking into individual language use can help to find usage distinctions in semantic clusters. Results need to be validated against a larger number of corpus informants: Across informants, more meaning overlaps can be observed. • Apparent time only allows a rather coarse diachronic view on the data, competing processes like establishment of new meanings and levelling would need a finer granularity on the timeline to be separated. Exact synonyms (lexical variants) are rare, if not regionally distributed. • Homonymy avoidance cannot be claimed as a general rule, but we find data fitting the pattern.

En este libro se presentan los fundamentos y los resultados de la investigación sobre el vocabulario disponible de los hablantes de la ciudad de Málaga. Esta investigación reúne y hace compatibles la línea tradicional de disponibilidad léxica y la línea específica de este trabajo, que se centra en la capacidad léxica de los hablantes. La primera conduce a la elaboración del diccionario de disponibilidad de la ciudad de Málaga obtenido a partir de cuestionarios basados en centros de interés; ello permite establecer comparaciones con trabajos precedentes realizados con estudiantes preuniversitarios y nos provee de un material de gran interés para el mejor conocimiento de la lengua española hablada en Málaga. La segunda línea pretende confirmar determinadas hipótesis sobre la determinación que la posición social y otras variables de hablante ejercen sobre el vocabulario virtual de los individuos.

The French language in Canada has historical roots extending back to the 1600’s. Today, many Canadians are French speakers. In fact, nearly 12% of Canadians speak only French, and nearly 18% of Canadians speak both English and French (Statistics Canada, 2017). In Ontario, where the current study was conducted, 622,415 Francophones comprise 4.7% of the population (Office of the French Language Services Commissioner of Ontario, 2016). The current project examining the language practices of adult Francophones takes place in this minority language context.

En esta contribución se estudian los nombres del botijo recogidos en el Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica y en los atlas regionales del castellano. El estudio se centra en los datos geolingüísticos españoles y en la información que aporta la historia lexicográfica de las palabras. El propósito es explicar de qué manera la distribución de los nombres en las variedades dialectales del español de España sirve para interpretar su secuenciación histórica, esto es, explicar cuáles son los términos más antiguos y cómo se han visto desplazados por nuevas variantes léxicas. Se combinan así dos tipos de datos, lexicográficos y geolingüísticos, para interpretar el sentido de las formas dialectales en su geografía.

En este trabajo se cartografían y estudian los distintos nombres del lagarto, la lagartija y la salamandra en las lenguas iberorrománicas a partir de las respuestas contenidas en el Atlas lingüístico de la península Ibérica (ALPI) y en los atlas regionales posteriores. El centro peninsular conoce derivados de *LACARTU, -A, mientras que en Portugal estos se vieron reemplazados por una innovación basada en el término sarda “mancha dérmica”, que alude a la piel jaspeada de los lagartos. En el oriente peninsular (Navarra, Aragón y áreas catalanoparlantes), *LACARTU se cruzó con el término árabe ḥarḏún “lagarto” y *LACARTA con salamandra, *salacarta, para dar origen a las denominaciones catalanas y aragonesas de la lagartija. Los datos dialectales revelan la existencia de cruces similares en otras áreas peninsulares. La nueva etimología propuesta se basa en el análisis detallado de la multitud de variantes fonéticas y morfológicas de estos tres lemas.

This paper presents results from a corpus-based study investigating lexical variation in BSL. An earlier study investigating variation in BSL numeral signs found that younger signers were using a decreasing variety of regionally distinct variants, suggesting that levelling may be taking place. Here, we report findings from a larger investigation looking at regional lexical variants for colours, countries, numbers and UK placenames elicited as part of the BSL Corpus Project. Age, school location and language background were significant predictors of lexical variation, with younger signers using a more levelled variety. This change appears to be happening faster in particular subgroups of the deaf community (e.g., signers from hearing families). Also, we find that for the names of some UK cities, signers from outside the region use a different sign than those who live in the region.

This paper presents an overview of the British Sign Language Corpus Project-the first endeavor ever to create a machine-readable digital corpus of British Sign Language (BSL) collected from deaf signers across the United Kingdom. In the field of sign language studies, it represents a unique combination of methodology from variationist sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. Unlike previous large-scale sign language sociolinguistic projects, the dataset is being annotated and tagged using ELAN software, given metadata descriptions, and the video data has been made accessible, with long-term efforts to make the dataset searchable on-line. 1. 0 Introduction The British Sign Language Corpus Project (BSLCP) was a project funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, 2008-2011) that aimed to create a machine-readable corpus of spontaneous and elicited British Sign Language (BSL) digital video data collected from deaf native, near-native and fluent signers across the United Kingdom. Researchers at University College London led the project, working with co-investigators based at Bangor University (Wales), Heriot-Watt University (Scotland), Queens University Belfast (Northern Ireland) and the University of Bristol (England). In the field of sign language studies, the BSLCP represents a unique combination of methodology from variationist sociolinguistics, language documentation, and corpus linguistics.
