Non-Binary Gender

En este texto se analizan las identidades trans y no binarias como fenómenos sociales y políticos que tensionan la estructura cis-heteronormativa del Estado moderno. A partir de una investigación documental con enfoque crítico, se examina el lugar histórico y contemporáneo de estas identidades en relación con la patologización científica, los recientes y crecientes procesos de reconocimiento institucional y la persistente violencia estructural que enfrentan. Se retoman aportaciones teóricas y categorías de Gloria Anzaldúa, Paul Preciado, Federico Besserer y Canela Bodenhofer para visibilizar cómo la construcción binaria de la categoría sexo-género ha sustentado la dominación patriarcal y la exclusión de corporalidades diversas. El análisis muestra que, aunque los Estados han comenzado a reconocer de forma limitada a las personas no binarias y trans en marcos legales y representativos, este reconocimiento se da bajo condiciones que reproducen jerarquías y contradicciones. Asimismo, se discuten los efectos sociales que derivan en violencia sistemática y en crímenes de odio, frecuentemente invisibilizados o mal clasificados. Se concluye que lo trans y lo no binario como elementos de identidad deben entenderse no solo como rasgos de identificación o etiquetas individuales, sino como posturas políticas que cuestionan y transgreden disruptivamente el orden cisnormativo, abriendo posibilidades para transformar la realidad, las ciencias sociales, el derecho y la vida en sociedad hacia horizontes más inclusivos.

It takes less then thirty verses within the first chapters of the book of Genesis to turn the relation of the first human couple from an equal companionship into a heteronormative hierarchy. The Jewish tradition of exegesis, including rabbinic works of literature such as the Midrash Bereshit Rabbah, implemented thereof a social matrix of the interpretation of the Gan Eden story. In the 21st century an absorbing Jewish novel for young adults, written by a female rabbi with the self-conception of standing in the line of Midrashic tradition, gives their interpretation and its gender conception a new turn.
Based on established gender theories and their contentious reception within the literature of Biblical and Jewish Studies, this article undertakes a critical, to some extent deconstructivist analysis of the exegetical and narrative hermeneutics of the biblical Gan Eden story and its reception within the classical rabbinic literature and Deborah Bodin Cohen’s ‘Teenage Tales of Biblical Women’ called Lilith’s Ark (2006). It will reveal literary processes of gender construction as well as giving a valuable insight into the contextual dynamics of understandings of Jewish tradition within a long chain of culture heritage.

Cisgender researchers can and must take action against transphobia within our spheres of influence (Knisely, 2023; Zimman, 2021). However, these processes, while necessary, can be fraught and problematic. Trans scholars have challenged the exploitative, cisnormative, and appropriative nature of much academic research by cisgender people on transgender people (Radi, 2019). How can cisgender researchers engage in the necessary work of opposing cissexism in our discipline, and can we do so without perpetuating a cycle of epistemic violence? In this paper, I offer critical reflections as a cisgender researcher on designing a research project on the language learning experiences of non-binary youth, grounded in scholarship by trans thinkers (Keenan, 2022; Nicolazzo (2017)), and collaborative research methodologies (Jourian & Nicolazzo, 2017; Mayo, 2017). I first discuss my own positionality as a cisgender individual. I then present three insights into what cisgender positionality means and the implications of these for researchers in Applied Linguistics. First, cisgender positionality means having limited personal experience with gender as complex and multidimensional, which requires nuancing how we ask questions related to identity, socialization, language, and embodiment. Second, cisgender positionality means being positioned as epistemic authorities, which necessitates deliberately centering participants as experts and analysts of their experiences. Third, cisgender positionality means benefiting from unearned privilege, which compels us to design research that directly benefits trans individuals and communities. Finally, I propose a critical self-reflection protocol for cisgender researchers for engaging ethically with trans participants.

This two-section article and interview with Jesús Hilario-Reyes, a queer, non-binary, Afro-Caribbean artist, explores their artwork to connect trans new media histories to contemporary trans Chicanx scholarship via recent notions on "glitch" and "stitch." The introduction connects Hilario-Reyes's uprootedness to trans thoughts on "the cut" and trans Chicanx scholar Francisco Galarte's concept of "Brown transfiguration." In Section One, Hilario-Reyes discusses their new media practices in relation to land, water, displacement, and diasporic disembodiment. The interview in Section One reveals their experiences with migration, as they reflect on their 3D animated work about Puerto Rico's post-Hurricane Maria flooding, and their role as a DJ creating queer Black space. Section Two delves deeper into their 3D art and music as a healing response to displacement, mourning, and "destierro" (being ripped from one's homeland). Hilario-Reyes's creativity, expressed through 3D animations, performance, and sound, becomes an embodied and worldbuilding practice infused with resistance and queer Black sovereignty. Their perspectives on "glitch, love, and storms" offer adjacent strategies to resistance optics, addressing the visibility/invisibility dynamics inherent in transphobia and white supremacy. Their understanding of climate change's white supremacist root cause affecting Puerto Rico leads to a transformation of the disembodying effects of systemic violence through trans and Black-informed gestures. Through Hilario-Reyes's 3D animations and video games, the article connects their work to larger trans scholarship, new media, and trans video game histories. Embodying non-binary and Afro-Caribbean thought, Hilario-Reyes re-engages the body, love, humanness, and their multiple possible selves, turning systemic violence's cataclysmic failures into trans and Afro-Caribbean liberation.

We reluctantly document several deeply troubling instances where Nature appears to be deliberately trolling the mathematical community by making our most sophisticated analytical expressions approximate trivial combinations of √2, √3, and √5. These unwelcome "coincidences" undermine centuries of rigorous mathematical development and suggest that Reality may be intentionally mocking our advanced theoretical frameworks. We express our profound disappointment with the Universe's apparent lack of respect for analytical complexity and formally request that someone direct us to the nearest cry closet.

Este artículo reflexiona sobre la relación entre la performatividad, la performance drag y los objetos cuir desde una perspectiva teórica y fenomenológica, centrada en identidades no binarias que practican drag en Aguascalientes, México. A partir de los aportes teóricos de Judith Butler, Teresa De Lauretis y Sara Ahmed, se analiza cómo el drag funciona como una herramienta política que desestabiliza el sistema sexo-género binario mediante la apropiación de tecnologías de género y objetos que producen desorientación. Se posiciona que las corporalidades drag no binarias emplean estéticas que parten de la monstruosidad, lo caricaturesco y lo alienígena como formas de subvertir las normas sociales. El texto se enfoca en tres artistas drag: Clxrity, Ella Moon y Lvbna Gaia, cuyas prácticas revelan formas de resistencia y construcción identitaria a través de lo visual, lo simbólico y lo performativo. Por medio de entrevistas, análisis fotográficos y referencias culturales se evidencia cómo el drag, más que una caracterización escénica, es una forma de vida, una declaración política y una vía para imaginar otras formas posibles de habitar el cuerpo y el mundo, desde la expresión artística radical de disidencia y agencia política.

Throughout the world history, the discourse of transgender is not a new one. Still the mankind relegating the transgender people to the level of 'It'. This chapter uncovers the resistive remnants of Black and Indigenous gender nonconformity in eighteenth-century New Orleans amid the racial capitalist regulation of labour. Reading the colonial archive against its grain, I show how dispossession operated not only through race and class but also through the violent imposition of the colonial gender binary. In the fluid colonial undercommons—illegal taverns, markets, and fugitive networks—enslaved Africans, Indigenous peoples, métis, sex workers, and convicts forged solidarities that unsettled racial and gender certainties. Beyond the plantation’s extractive demands, idleness, informal labour, and refusal became insurgent acts, disrupting dominant rhythms of early capitalist productivity. Such ephemeral spaces and fugitive gestures remind us that gender was not a static given but continuously made and contested alongside race and work. The chapter calls for attention to telling archival absences and everyday acts of endurance, inviting ways of imagining life and work that resist extractive logics and rigid binaries.

As relações de indivíduos no coletivo é fundamentada nas relações estabelecidas através de códigos compartilhados, através da comunicação. Gestos, expressões, representações, imagens e figuras, sons são alguns destes códigos que compõem uma gama complexa que podemos chamar de linguagem. No dia-a-dia reinventamos nossas possibilidades de comunicarmos e reinventamos, consequentemente, a nossa língua e seus usos, adequando às necessidades de sujeitos em sociedade. Segundo uma perspectiva durkheimiana, este e outros autores da chamada "virada linguística" defendem que a língua não pode ser alterada por falantes individuais, já que faz parte de uma estrutura social estabelecida. Discussões pós-modernas trazem novos elementos, inclusive a construção de identidades e suas representações (como apontado por Stuart Hall) e a ampliação das relações através de mídias digitais, onde o auto-reconhecimento e o reconhecimento de outrxs demandam pensar tanto nas identidades, quanto nas diferenças. Neste artigo, apresento a questão do uso de pronomes de gênero não-binários na língua portuguesa, como uma forma repensar essa generalidade e totalidade da língua sobre os corpos e identidades de sujeitos. O objetivo é refletir sobre possibilidades e limitações desta alternativa não-binária, que visa promover uma linguagem mais inclusiva.

Background The moral panic surrounding trans, non-binary, and gender diverse (TGD) lives in the United Kingdom (UK) has been incited by high-level political and government actors and exacerbated by pervasive misinformation in social and press media. This hostile environment contributes to increasing interpersonal violence and social exclusion experienced by TGD people. Structural and interpersonal discrimination-conceptualised as minority stress-is understood to elicit physiological and psychological stress responses that predispose TGD individuals to a range of adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, and risk behaviours such as alcohol use. Main body Health disparities among TGD people in the UK are driven by a combination of minority stress, barriers to general healthcare, and disadvantage across multiple social determinants of health. Limited access to genderaffirming healthcare compounds these disparities, contributing to stark differences in morbidity and mortality relative to cisgender populations. Preventive healthcare engagement is also disproportionately low among TGD individuals, further exacerbating long-term health risks. The intersection of social exclusion, policy-driven discrimination, and systemic healthcare inequities places TGD people at significant and potentially increasing risk of poor health outcomes. Conclusions The health disparities faced by TGD people in the UK constitute a real-time public health crisis that demands urgent and sustained intervention. TGD people must be central to shaping the strategic direction of a coordinated and adequately resourced response to these harms.

İnsan türünün cinsiyet açısından iki zıt gruba ayrıldığı ve tüm bireylerin bu iki gruptan birine ait olduğu varsayımı “(toplumsal) cinsiyet ikiliği” olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Bu anlayışa göre cinsiyet biyolojik açıdan iki-biçimli (dimorfik) bir sistemdir ve dolayısıyla cinsiyetle ilişkili diğer özelliklerin de iki-biçimli olduğu varsayılır. Yani her bireyin ya dişi ya da erkek olarak doğduğu ve hormonlarının, beyin yapısının ve psikolojik özelliklerinin de buna paralel olarak şekillendiği kabul edilir. Öte yandan, bu varsayımın bilimsel geçerliliği, özellikle son 20-30 yıldaki ampirik ve meta-analitik çalışmalardan elde edilen bulguların etkisiyle giderek daha fazla sorgulanmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, bu yazıda, (toplumsal) cinsiyet ikiliği varsayımının geçersizliğini gösteren güncel araştırma bulgularının bütünlüklü bir şekilde sunulması ve tartışılması amaçlanmıştır. Söz konusu bulgular, insanlardaki cinsiyet olgusunun -ne biyolojik ne de psikolojik açıdan- ikili kategorileştirmeye sıkıştırılamayacak düzeyde çeşitlilik içerdiğini göstermektedir. Bu sebeple, ikili cinsiyet modelinin yerine, cinsiyet olgusunun çok-boyutlu, dinamik ve etkileşimsel doğasını dikkate alan alternatif yaklaşımların kullanılması önerilmektedir.

Resumo: Abordamos neste artigo o debate sobre não-binariedade no Brasil a partir de um contexto midiático e ativista. Tendo como perspectiva metodológica a "investigação narrativa" (Cardona & Alvarado Salgado, 2015), analisamos expressões discursivas produzidas por jovens influenciadores e produtores de conteúdo brasileiros não-bináries e/ou dissidentes de gênero no Instagram. Para situar esta análise, partimos de contextos macrossociais nos quais se engendram tais narrativas juvenis, bem como consideramos a pluralidade dos modos de narrar a não-binariedade, atinentes a processos de subjetivação e posicionamentos socioculturais. A partir daí, são propostas possíveis particularidades deste narrar, buscando elencar pistas interpretativas que indiquem para uma episteme própria destas juventudes em nosso país. Emergiram ênfases tais como: a) a premissa da interseccionalidade na enunciação da não-binariedade; b) a denúncia da invisibilização em vários planos (afetivo, econômico, discursivo); c) a não-binariedade como identificação ou como modo de ser; d) os conflitos internos a movimentos/setores LGBTQIAP+; e) a caracterização da não-binariedade em uma perspectiva de cura, como experiência libertária. Finalmente, relacionamos estes achados reflexivos a mutações da ação política juvenil na contemporaneidade, indicando sua intertextualidade com as lutas de minorias e dissidências sexuais e de gênero no enfrentamento ao recrudescimento do conservadorismo e do totalitarismo de extrema direita, em vinculação direta com a cisheteronormatividade e a colonialidade do poder.

Background and Aims: This study examines the association of mental health, social and relational contexts, and gaming-related characteristics on the psychological profiles of video game players based on emotional regulation and motivations for gaming. Methods: A multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted on an international sample of 5.255 gamers aged 16 to 69 (M = 25.6 years, SD = 6.46). Participants included 49.87 % men (M = 26.4, SD = 7.06), 43.24 % women (M = 25.1, SD = 5.77), and 9.29 % non-binary individuals (M = 23.3, SD = 5.24) from 112 countries. Mental health, attachment styles, social interactions, and gaming behaviors were analyzed into four profiles: avoidant, engaged, relational, and dysregulated. Results: The avoidant profile, linked to older gamers, exhibited low distress, secure attachment, and offline social preferences, reflecting healthier habits. The engaged profile, the largest group, showed secure attachment and active integration of gaming into social contexts. The relational profile presented insecure attachment and emotional regulation difficulties. The dysregulated profile, associated with younger gamers, was characterized by high distress, emotional dysregulation, substance use, and a preference for online interactions. Conclusions: The profiles dysregulated and relational are associated with insecure attachment and mental health difficulties, whereas the profiles engaged and avoidant are associated with secure attachment and low levels of psychological distress. These findings underscore the complex interplay of psychological, social, and gamingrelated factors associated with gaming profiles, offering insights for further study on harm prevention and promoting non-problematic gaming behaviors.

Feminist scholars have written for decades about the radical potential, if not the necessity, of ungendering for resisting gender inequality. Yet much of this work has been theoretical, and other scholars have questioned whether ungendering is even possible. Drawing on interviews with 30 asexual individuals, the author presents empirical findings that lend support to the plausibility of ungendering. On the basis of these findings, the author introduces the concept of gender detachment, which refers to individually held notions that gender is irrelevant, unimportant, pointless, and/or overall not a helpful framework for understanding and defining the self. The author argues that the difficulty of navigating these feelings highlights gender, and not merely the gender binary, as a compulsory system of categorization. The author also argues that this finding highlights the need to theorize around compulsory gender. The author concludes by discussing gender detachment's connections to and differences from the concepts of degendering, ungendering, undoing gender, redoing gender, nonbinary identification, and gender vertigo. The author also considers gender detachment's potential for radical resistance to gender (and the inequality gender produces) and the potential complications in realizing that potential.

El propósito del presente artículo es abo-carse,  desde  la  perspectiva  analítica  del  giro afectivo, a la comprensión de las voces disonantes identificadas en tres facultades de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). Los  materiales  que  conforman  el  corpus de  análisis  provienen  de  una  etnografía  virtual  realizada  durante  2021-2022  en las  páginas  de  Facebook  de  las  instituciones  en  análisis,  así  como  de  grupos  focales realizados con estudiantes durante el  mes  de  julio  de  2022.  Este  trabajo  se  realizó  en  el  marco  del  Proyecto  UBACyT  20020190200117BA:  Demandas feministas,  disidencia  sexual  y  universidad.  Transformaciones  recientes  en  los  saberes,  los espacios y la sociabilidad cotidiana en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, dirigido por el  Dr.  Rafael  Blanco  y  codirigido  por  la  Dra. Carolina Spataro en el área de Salud y  Población,  del  Instituto  de  Investigaciones “Gino Germani” de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. También se retoman los resultados de la Encuesta de salud sexual, de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales (FSoc)-UBA (2021) y la encuesta realizada en el marco del proyecto: Diseñar y rediseñar el espacio  universitario  desde  una  perspectiva  de  género.  Estudio  de  caso  del  campus  de  la  Universidad de Buenos Aires (2015-2020). Como  principal  aporte  se  señala  que  los  posicionamientos  motivados  por  estas  políticas no son blanco o negro, sino que configuran  una  serie  de  matices  que  el  artículo se propone recuperar. A partir del concepto de voces disonantes se pretende dar cuenta de los desacuerdos que conviven junto a otros afectos de diferente tenor.

Based on the criticism of the generic masculine by feminist and gender linguistics, various strategies to overcome it have been proposed. These can be divided into three categories: feminization and the making visible of women; neutralization strategies and descriptions; and the making visible of non-binary identities. This article examines the frequency of the different strategies and their types on the front pages of Austrian and German periodicals. The results suggest that the generic masculine makes up at most less than a third of all personal references. Meanwhile, making visible strategies (both feminizing and diversionary) are (almost) absent on the front pages of the analysed Austrian and German periodicals, while neutralizing strategies play a significant role.

Con riferimento alla disciplina della rettificazione di attribuzione di sesso, la Corte costituzionale ha dichiarato illegittima la norma che prescriveva l’autorizzazione del tribunale al trattamento medico-chirurgico anche qualora le modificazioni dei caratteri sessuali già intervenute fossero state ritenute dallo stesso tribunale sufficienti per l’accoglimento della domanda di rettificazione. Al contempo, la Corte ha invece dichiarato inammissibile l’ulteriore questione relativa alla possibilità per l’interessato di essere riconosciuto come appartenente a un genere diverso da quelli – maschile o femminile – attualmente contemplati dall’ordinamento. In ordine al primo punto, la decisione appare condivisibile, sebbene le sue motivazioni non siano del tutto congruenti. Diversamente, in ordine al secondo punto, la decisione appare discutibile sia nei suoi esiti sia nelle sue motivazioni.

La  literatura  biomédica  define  las  transiciones  como  un  proceso  lineal  y  en  muchos  casos  irreversible  que  debe  ser  valorado  por  profesionales  de  la  salud  mental.  Uno  de  los  argumentos es el posible “arrepentimiento” o “detransición” tras someterse a cambios corporales y/o identitarios. En este estudio  de  caso  se  muestra  una  aproximación  diferente.  El  objetivo  principal  es  identificar  y  describir  diferentes  dimensiones de las transiciones de género fuera del modelo biomédico.  Basándose  en  entrevistas  de  una  investigación cualitativa  realizada  en  España,  este  artículo  explora  los  relatos  de  cuatro  personas  trans  y  no  binarias  adultas.  La  información  se  analizó  siguiendo  la  teoría  fundamentada  desde  un  enfoque  constructivista.  A  partir  del  paradigma  interaccionista,  las  transiciones  se  conciben  aquí  desde  cuatro  “anclajes  identitarios”  (demandas  de  interacción,  cuerpo,  nombre  propio  y  memoria  personal).  Se  concluye  que  la  experimentación  con  la  posición  de  género,  la  incertidumbre  y  las  negociaciones  con  el  entorno  cercano  resultan  elementos  más  significativos  que  los  criterios  de  idoneidad  clínica.  Se  muestran  los  tránsitos  más  que  como  un medio para alcanzar un resultado, como fin en sí mismo sujeto  a  la  toma  de  decisiones,  cuestionamientos  y  no  linealidad en lo que respecta a la propia identidad personal

Within the last decade, emerging research and activism in the sphere of transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) persons has necessitated new vocabulary and perspectives. Families of TGNB are often challenged to reevaluate understandings of gender, of sexuality, and the family unit itself. Gender binaries are perpetuated and reinforced in Western culture through our gender “performances” (Butler, 2004), and children are judged on their performances (Wahlig, 2015). The conceptual model of decentering cisnormativity allows researchers to analyze when tensions grow taut when society members are confronted with gender nonconformity. Parents often undergo transformation when they choose to explore these tensions, deconstruct their assumptions about gender, and critically reflect on their underlying biases, belief systems, values, and understandings. Drawing from a study of women on boards in Egypt, in this methodological article we propose and illustrate four parts of a multidimensional feminist hermeneutic process for Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a method of uncovering hidden stories of marginalised voices and unrecognised contexts. Underpinned by Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology, our novel four-stage approach includes visual images as an alternative mode of data (re)presentation within the hermeneutic circle of interpretation. We show how IPA enables (re)imagining new possibilities of doing and writing feminist research and promotes an indepth knowledge of the lived experience of women, as well as the systemic issues that concern them. Our contribution highlights our IPA process and outcomes, as a form of feminist praxis that prioritises the recognition of marginalisation and Otherness, embraces an ethic of care towards research participants and researchers, and provides a transformative, emancipatory opportunity for reciprocal learning, awareness and knowing of experience.

The emergence of demands from society aimed at overcoming gender binarism challenges one of the foundational (often implicit) axioms upon which contemporary legal systems have been constructed.
After providing a brief doctrinal overview of the relationship between transformative constitutionalism and the right to gender identity, this paper aims to explore, through comparative analysis, the approaches adopted by certain constitutional democracies regarding the issue of non-binarism. In light of the current international and comparative legal framework, a preliminary analysis of the Italian Constitutional Court’s Decision No. 143 of 2024 is proposed.

In this piece, we rewrite the 2014 Australian High Court decision in NSW Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages v Norrie from a queer perspective.Through this decision, Norrie was successful in changing their sex/gender descriptor on their birth certificate to ‘non-specific.’ We reimagine the case through the lens of the queer figure of tricksters, who unsettle and transgress the limits of the law. Although the original judgment was positive to Norrie, we offer an even more positive—and queer—decision, centring Norrie’s voice and challenging colonial and heterocisnormative thinking by celebrating self-determination and difference. In our commentary, we also include Norrie's own reflections on the case from an interview conducted with Odette in 2019.

This article explores the challenges posed by a self-determination model of identity for nonbinary French speakers. Situating nonbinary French speakers within a broader context of governmental and institutional rejection of nonbinary French, the article examines examples of nonbinary expression found in online mediatized representations as well as how this nonbinary expression is framed by narrators and producers of the content. In the two video examples selected for analysis, both taken from YouTube, nonbinary French speakers articulate nonbinary identity through a variety of linguistic strategies that include nonbinary linguistic forms and novel uses of binary language. However, regardless of the strategies used, narrators reframe these linguistic innovations under a gender binary. The reasons put forth for rejecting nonbinary expression may differ, but they all work to deny the existence of nonbinary people.

Non-binary people make up just over half the UK trans population and younger people are more likely to identify as non-binary than those over 35. Despite this increasing recognition, non-binary identities and experiences continue to be widely misunderstood. Similarly, if university trans inclusion policies focus solely on models of binary or medical transition, they will not fully address the needs of non-binary students. In the context of an increased focus on the participation and success of marginalized social groups in higher education, and a social and political backlash against equality, diversity and inclusion work, questions of how nonbinary students thrive in universities are pressing. Non-binary inclusion and experiences in higher education have received little dedicated attention. This article draws on data from the largest survey to date of nonbinary students in the United Kingdom and begins to fill those gaps. We highlight the prominence in the survey of issues around 'peeing' and 'pronouns' in the lived experiences of non-binary students and demonstrate the detrimental impact of the lack of recognition on students' learning and lives at university. We conclude universities must get beyond 'peeing and pronouns' to reimagine higher education as an accessible and inclusive space.

Maharani is one of the most different and partly autobiographical work of Ruskin Bond. It is different because the author
himself is performing a double role of Narrator as well as a character of his own. The opening lines of this novella “I think I
am dying Ruskin, said by Neena Her- Highness , remains ambiguous . These words reveal the close relationship of author as
a character with Neena , central character of the novel. “Maharani”, published in 2012 by Ruskin Bond introduced a special
narrative contingency that is different from his previous narrative styles, which is ethically directing him in a relation
between self and other characters in the novel and thus, he loses his singularity as a narrator. This novel is special in the
sense that he himself is playing a character of Ruskin bond and thus exterminating his position as a narrator but developing
himself as a character. This paper is an attempt to investigate the technique of narration used by Bond and its effectiveness.
The novel “Maharani” explores the vibrant but gloomy world of Neena H.H (her -highness) who is a spoilt, self obsessed,
glamorous widow of the Maharaja of Mastipur. The novel is full of charm as the author writes about love, death, and
explores friendship of melancholic Maharani with her old friend Ruskin. Playing a character himself is a considerable
challenge to the self’s singularity to accommodate an attractive narration throughout on his authors cost.
But this kind of narrative is different from the typical narrative practices made by his contemporary and may be assumed as
a radical challenge in existing narrative trends.

People in the United States are born into a culture still fastened to historical policing of gender and gender identities. While social and political movements have helped galvanize and afford some material, social, and economic gains about gender and gender identities, schools and many other institutions providing youth services remain as inheritors of gender norms and their subsequent attributions. Unfortunately, such changes have yet to be systemically addressed and rooted across or studied over time. Such gaps have left educators and those working with youth ill-prepared and ill-equipped to sufficiently address gender identity topics through coursework, curriculum, and pedagogy (Kosciw, Greytak, Diaz, & Bartkiewicz, 2016; Miller, 2016a. Schools have become a type of prison that mirror social, cultural, and economic modes of reproduction. Seen in this way, some bodies are instantiated with multiple forms of cultural capital or social currency while others have diminished capital. Specifically, some youth are vulnerable to experiencing gender identity insecurities that manifest as disproportionate rates of bullying, dropping out, truancy, lowered grade point averages (GPAs), mental health and substance issues ; pushout into the juvenile processing system ; homelessness presence in foster care and/or group homes; and suicidal ideation. The numbers of these incidents are much higher for youth of color . In addition, suspensions result in exclusion from classroom instruction and the school community. When these students are not present in school, everyone has diminished opportunities to learn and grow. These microaggressions and forms of gender identity-based violence could be disrupted if the schooling system and other youth-serving agencies were to embrace policies and procedures that shifted beliefs and practices about gender identity. Queer-utopioiden tehtävä on nykyhetken kritiikki, joka mahdollistaa utopistisen tulevaisuuden kuvittelemisen. Tässä sukupuolentutkimuksen alan maisterintutkielmassa analysoin muunsukupuolisten* omakuvien avulla sitä, miten taiteen kuvat ja prosessit voivat toimia queer-utopioiden välineinä. Miten ne voivat auttaa purkamaan binäärisiä sukupuolinormeja ja näin edesauttaa muunsukupuolisten* ihmisyyden tunnistamista? Tutkimuksessa ’muunsukupuolinen*’ toimii kattoterminä, joka kattaa kaikki sellaiset henkilöt, jotka eivät itsestään selvästi tai ainoastaan identifioidu binääristen sukupuolinormien mukaisten sukupuolikategorioiden mukaan naisiksi tai miehiksi. Asteriski muistuttaa tutkimusaineistossa esiintyvästä moninaisuudesta.

Tutkimuksessa haastattelin muunsukupuolisia* heidän tekemistään omakuvista, jotka toteutettiin osana taiteen maisterintutkielmaani IN/VISIBILITY – Queer(ing) Photography (2020). Haastatteluja tehtiin kaikkiaan kaksitoista, ja ne toteutettiin virikehaastatteluina, joissa omakuva oli mukana haastattelutilanteessa. Tutkimuksen läpäisevänä teemana toimii utopia, johon pyrin myös yhteistyötä korostavalla metodologialla ja aineiston moninaisuuden huomioivalla tulosten analyysillä.

Lähestyn aihettani queer-teoreettisesti, jolloin sukupuoli näyttäytyy kontingenttina ja sitä rajoittavat erilaiset historiallisesti ja kulttuurisesti määrittyvät normit. Visuaaliset representaatiot ovat yksi niistä tavoista, jolla sukupuolta ja sen normeja tehdään ja puretaan.

Omaa sukupuolen representaatiota pohtiessaan muunsukupuoliset* osallistujat joutuvat ottamaan huomioon sekä binääriset sukupuolinormit että muunsukupuolisuuteen* liittyvän transnormatiivisuuden. Nämä normit myös rajoittavat muunsukupuolisuuden* tunnistamista. Queer-utopioiden kannalta tärkeiksi nousevat sellaiset tilanteet ja yhteisöt, joissa muunsukupuolisuus* tunnistetaan ehdoitta ilman binääristen sukupuolinormien tai muunsukupuolisuuteen* liittyvän transnormatiivisuuden rajoituksia.

Tutkimus yhdistää queer- ja transtutkimusta sekä visuaalisen kulttuurin tutkimusta. Se osallistuu ajankohtaiseen keskusteluun sukupuolen moninaisuudesta, transihmisten itsemääräämisoikeudesta sekä vähemmistörepresentaatioiden merkityksestä.

This Master’s thesis is based on artistic research in the field of photography. My main questions are: what is queer photography and how to queer photography. I have selected four strategies – failure/abstraction, haptic visuality, corner, and agency – to explore the possibilities of queer(ing) photography. I use these strategies in my artistic practice. The aim is to create images that simultaneously queer the photographic practice and are queer in content. The thesis also includes a feminist research manifesto that I use as a tool for self-reflection.

I discuss the central term 'queer' and the definitions of 'queer art' and 'queering art'. I argue that the term 'queer' cannot be separated from either queer identities nor it's norm-defying qualities. I later utilize these definitions with my chosen queer tactics. Each tactic further explores the possibilities and variations of queer art through artistic practice. The key theories that I focus on are queer failure by J. Halberstam, queer abstraction by D. Getsy, and haptic visuality by L.U. Marks. In addition to these, I discuss minority/queer (self-)representation in portrait photography.

All of my methods somehow address the politics of visibility, each from a slightly different angle. I discuss the need and dangers of exposure, concentrating mainly on the questions of transgender/non-binary representation.

The thesis consists of this theoretical written part and an artistic part of 17 photographs and an exhibition plan. I publish the artistic part under the pseudonym Jussi Lautu.

Gender Identity Complexities Framework (GICF), a framework guided by axioms, with principles and commitments is a tool produced for educators to guide, both themselves and students, to experience gender identity self-determination  and usher in gender identity justice.  Ultimately, stakeholders who practice this framework have increased capacities to shift mindsets and physical environments and lead to new way of thinking about and playing with inventing language.

Este texto tiene como finalidad presentar la obra académica de Margot Pujal i Llombart, con motivo del acto de reconocimiento concedido por el Observatorio de Igualdad de la UAB. Desde el vínculo académico y personal, se destacan las características más relevantes de su trabajo en los Estudios de Género y Feministas en el contexto de una Psicología Social Crítica. Este trabajo se enraíza en las epistemologías feministas y apuesta por una ciencia emancipadora que problematiza las lógicas y relaciones de poder. Su producción teórica y analítica se ha orientado de manera rigurosa al análisis del impacto de los dispositivos de poder en lo subjetivo e intersubjetivo, para profundizar en la tensión entre sujeción y agencia, así como en la dimensión emocional y corporal de la desigualdad. En esta línea, su trabajo aporta claves imprescindibles para la comprensión de las experiencias de malestar vinculadas a los condicionantes de género de manera interseccional.

Este trabalho compõe o crescente campo de estudos sobre não-binariedade de gênero no Brasil. Seu objetivo é mapear produções e publicações nacionais sobre o tema, em especial no meio acadêmico, compreendendo como a não-binariedade tem adentrado o âmbito da pesquisa no ensino superior. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa documental através de diversas plataformas de busca como currículo Lattes, Google Acadêmico e Scielo, que resultou em 105 textos identificados sobre o tema, no período entre 2015 e março de 2024. Foram levantadas pesquisas em andamento e eventos que ocorreram ao longo do período mapeado, de modo a relacionar o aumento crescente do número de publicações com o contexto sociopolítico geral do país, considerando recentes políticas de ações afirmativas em instituições de ensino superior para pessoas trans, assim como disputas internas à comunidade LGBTIAP+ que extrapolam os limites dos textos, porém que contribuem para desenhar os sentidos da categoria não-binárie. Assim, entende-se que o aumento perceptível das produções sobre não-binariedade de gênero contribui para a elaboração e estabelecimento dessa categoria emergente, não apenas pelo que dissertam sobre o tema, mas considerando as condições e locais nos quais são desenvolvidos.

Se trata de un estudio de caso realizado en el ámbito de la Ciudad Universitaria, campus en el que se emplazan las facultades de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (FCEyN) y de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo (FADU).

According to Elżbieta Tabakowska, it is the duty of translators to empathize not only with the authors of the translated texts, but also with their heroes and recipients. This statement is correct especially in the perspective of contemporary cultural and socio-political conditions reflected in the texts of culture, and thus-in translation. It is confirmed by interviews with translators, in which they indicate how important the ongoing social changes are for them, the effects of which they must include in translations, which is not necessarily allowed by the specificity of the Polish language-in other words, they emphasize a certain "lack" in it. This "lack"-or rather sensitivity to its existence-can be considered in the context of tenderness, which is particularly important in the practice of feminist and queer translations, focused on giving voice to those who have been deprived of it for many years. There is also an ideological element here-"tenderness" understood in this way would be conditioned by transferring one's own perspective into the text-e.g., resulting from the ease of identification of the translator with the characters. The aim of the article is an attempt to indicate why translators want to compensate for this "lack" and how they do it. Contemporary novels are the subject of reflection - The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester by Maya MacGregor, I Wish You All The Best by Mason Deaver, Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters-and the reportage Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo and their Polish translations belonging to the so-called queer literature, in which one can observe various ways of showing compassion, giving voice to heroes and narrators by translators, influencing the possibility of self-identification. An important context for my considerations are conversations with translators-Aga Zano and Artur Łuksza.

Recent initiatives have highlighted the need for integrating a gender perspective into English Language teaching (ELT), particularly in Colombia where gender diversity in education lacks significant sociocultural advancement. This study investigates the perceptions of 11 queer preservice English-language teachers (PSELTs) from a Colombian public university, using semistructured interviews to explore their views on queering ELT and their future roles as educators. The findings emphasise the importance and challenges of adopting a queer perspective in ELT, essential for creating inclusive environments that respect (queer) students' identities. Moreover, the experiences of these PSELTs during their training have empowered and motivated them as future educators to advocate for societal transformation by promoting awareness of gender diversity in Colombian EFL classrooms. This study supports critical educational reforms that recognise and integrate diverse identities, enriching teaching practices and fostering inclusive learning environments.

This paper examines the theme of motherhood as portrayed in Caryl Churchill's plays: Top
Girls(1982) and Fen (1983). By delving into the nuanced exploration of motherhood within these works,
this paper aims to shed light on the complex and multifaceted nature of maternal experiences, while also
analyzing the social, cultural, and political contexts that shape these representations. Through a close
reading of the plays, this paper elucidates the diverse perspectives on motherhood presented by Churchill.
Moreover, this paper situates Churchill's exploration of motherhood within the broader socio-political
landscape of the time. It considers the feminist movements and debates surrounding reproductive rights
and motherhood in the late 20th century, as well as the socio-economic realities that shaped women's
experiences. By contextualizing the plays, this research paper provides a comprehensive understanding of
how Churchill's works engage with the theme of motherhood as a lens to comment on the complexities of
gender, power, and social expectations.
