OVERVIEW of GOALS:

* To understand families in cultural context to learn to listen to family stories in order to identify their mental, relational, and social predicaments as expressions of their unique cultures

* To define culture change and identify its mental, relational, and social health impacts on families as a cascade of consequences

Provenendo il concetto della ‘polifonia’ dal greco antico – e significando ‘mu-
sica a più voci’ ovvero ‘multi-vocalizzazione’ oppure ‘multi-vocalità’ – in questa mia analisi vorrei indagarne il nesso con la transculturalità e rileggere nell’ottica storico-postmoderna, transmediale e comparatistica le storie di successo di due opere liriche che hanno girato il mondo e che continuano a riscontrare grande entusiasmo nel campo della cultura transnazionale: "Cavalleria rusticana" (1890) di Pietro Mascagni e "Pagliacci" (1892) di Ruggero Leoncavallo.

La transculturalità, in generale, si manifesta in vari spazi socioculturali correlati all'incrocio tra le culture, discipline e società globalizzate che si localizzano negli interstizi ibridi "tra" gli studi culturali, la filosofia, la sociologia e altre discipline-nel cosiddetto "in between" ovvero terzo spazio. Essendo collegata agli approcci metodologici del postcolonialismo (Edward Said), del nomadismo (Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari), ibridismo (Homi K. Bhabha) e/o tardo postmodernismo (Wolfgang Welsch), la transculturalità focalizza innanzitutto le interazioni, le relazioni e i rapporti-triangolari o plurilaterali che siano-nell'ambito di diverse costellazioni, collisioni e cooperazioni di tipo culturale. In questa introduzione al volume "Icone della transculturalità" presentiamo l’impatto culturale e il contributo intellettuale, il fascino e l’originalità di vere e proprie "Icone della transculturalità" italofo-
na, da intendersi come pionieri, protagonisti e comprimari della storia scientifico-culturale moderna sia in Italia sia all’estero: da Dante e Raffaello a Federico Fellini e Dario Fo per arrivare a Dacia Maraini, Maurizio Cattelan e altri grandi nomi. Con l’analisi degli aspetti più significativi del loro operato artistico, pedagogico e letterario, si evidenzia il significato di loro idee innovative, nuovi concetti, modelli rivoluzionari e immagini emblematiche, per cogliere la profonda stratificazione transculturale di un potenziale creativo orientato alle novità sul piano scientifico, socioculturale o didattico, nel passato e nel presente. In tal modo si intende stimolare lo sviluppo di una ragione trasversale e un nuovo linguaggio iconografico che si orientino alla postmodernità massmediatica, combinando la transdisciplinarità e la transmedialità con la didattica, al fine di promuovere la teoria della transcultura e la formazione di una "cultura mondo" ante litteram.

La pedagoga, pediatra e pedagogista, medica, professoressa universitaria, insegnante, femminista, pacifista, filantropa, filosofa, anticonformista, viaggiatrice, madre di figlio unico, nonna di quattro nipoti e bisnonna di undici pronipoti, ricercatrice e rivoluzionaria culturale-educativa, rappresentante dell’attivismo pedagogico in Italia (Progressive Educa-
tion), è l’incarnazione paradigmatica di un personaggio transculturale e Soggetto nomade (1995), secondo le categorie odeporiche della filosofa e teorica femminista Rosi Braidotti. Ancora oggi il nome di Maria Montessori
(1870-1952) è associato alla diffusione di un pensiero – nato, modellato e praticato inizialmente su territorio italiano dalla mente di un’italiana e reso pubblico sul piano scientifico ed educativo originalmente e prevalentemente in lingua italiana per poi estendersi sino a livello squisitamente internazionale. A testimonianza di ciò si evidenziano la presenza e le attuali attività delle tante scuole, degli asili nido ovvero asili d’infanzia e delle scuole materne Montessori, nelle quali si applicano le sue teorie e si pratica l’educazione montessoriana tuttora intorno al globo.

I problemi del cosiddetto Sud globale sembrano aver sostituito quelli della sfera che eravamo soliti definire il Terzo Mondo, nel XX secolo. Come mai oggi preferiamo parlare del Sud globale, invece di ricorrere all'inappropriata classificazione di un "terzo" mondo? Cosa c'entra il Sud globale con la globalizzazione e dove si trova sulle carte geografiche, dopotutto?
Sembra ovvio che dietro queste domande si nasconda una gerarchia di valori, valutazioni e circostanze che si sono evolute nel tempo e sono collegate a questioni etiche, mentalità umane e all'esperienza storica del colonialismo. Quest'ultimo parametro - Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) docet (cfr. Gramsci, 1973, 1948-1951) - costituisce la base di tutte le questioni egemoniche culturali e politiche in questo contesto. La necessità di decolonizzare le nostre menti, le nostre abitudini culturali e i nostri modi di pensare e di vivere è al centro della seguente conversazione tra l'autore italo-britannico Iain Chambers e studioso di cultura e la scienziata italo-tedesca Dagmar Reichardt, esperta degli Studi Transculturali i quali ha introdotto metodologicamente e sistematicamente nel campo dell'Italianistica internazionale.

I will first describe the core principles that underpin the traditional Chinese perspective on temporality and future, focusing particularly on the Later Moist view. Then I will introduce the concept of time as developed by St. Augustine, whose work is central to Western philosophy because of its introspective examination of time as an inner, psychological experience, distinct from the more empirical approaches of his predecessors. This foundation in Augustine's thought provides a critical contrast to the Moist view and enriches our exploration of the subjective and objective dimensions of time. Through a comparative analysis of these two perspectives and the application of the method of transcultural comparative sublation, I aim to illuminate how different approaches to understanding future can shape human perceptions of realities.

The 75th edition of the Berlinale was especially positive for Brazilian cinema. More than 20 films, including feature-length and short films, represented a production that, despite the unpredictability of public policies, has proven to be vigorous and diverse. Blue Trail (O Último Azul) by Gabriel Mascaro, was the most awarded, leaving the festival with the Ecumenical Jury Prize, the Morgenpost Readers' Prize, and the Grand Jury Prize. The Silver Bear is essentially the second most important award at Berlinale.

The Impact of Charismatisation of the Mainline Churches in Tanzania

This book provides an in-depth discussion of the cultural and missional implications of the explosion of charismatic Christianity on mainline denominations in Africa. The book proposes that the charismatization of mainline churches is a contextual, missional, and transcultural phenomenon that enriches and invigorates African Christian communities. Focused on the experience of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and using Prosperity Gospel as an example, the book explores how some mainline churches are being enriched by adopting practices of charismatic Christianity. It proposes a holistic and contextual understanding of the Prosperity Gospel, understood as the mafanikio gospel in Tanzania, as a relevant theological resource for Lutherans in Dar-es-Salaam. In doing so, it intends to contribute to the needed paradigm shift in theological discourses around Prosperity Gospel to challenge stereotypical criticisms that label it false and misleading.

Le artiterapie sono discipline di matrice artistica impiegate in ambito educativo, riabilitativo, formativo e per la crescita personale. Non insegnano, quindi, tecniche artistiche ma le utilizzano per favorire lo sviluppo e l’espressione della persona. Il volume vuole fare chiarezza su queste attività oggi molto praticate ma ancora poco conosciute nel dettaglio delle basi scientifiche e delle molteplici applicazioni.

In this article, I suggest that James Baldwin’s affinity with and influence on the literatures of queer and Black minorities are two prominent, although not exclusive, manifestations of Baldwin’s central position in a variety of modes of ‘minor’ literature, and that invocations of Baldwin’s minority status(es) are strategized as assets that enhance Baldwin’s circulation-and that of his invokers. Without directly equating W.E.B. Du Bois’s African American context to other forms of minoritization, I argue that the term "double consciousness" can also be of use to denote the inherent multiplicity of Baldwin’s “two-ness”; as sexuality, ethnicity, social standing, and other factors each come to occupy the position that Du Bois assigns to African American identity, Baldwin’s multifarious modes of the minor at once exemplify the flexibility of the concept and suggest that these various applications reinforce one another. I argue that this multiplicity allows contemporary authors to mobilize Baldwin for their own strategic positionings in the world literary field and to convert minority into prestige. I exemplify this dynamic by turning to two strategically chosen contemporary world literary authors: Didier Eribon and Alain Mabanckou. Although both authors invoke Baldwin in discourses that are decidedly marked by notions of social and cultural minoritization, they move beyond the paradigm of Black and/or queer literary affinity, thus enhancing the circulation of Baldwin’s interlocking and mutually reinforcing minor positions.

The classical Cartesian dualism body/mind has informed much of western thought since the 17th century and it has also served as a means with which to validate unbalanced dichotomies, especially those associated to gender roles, which placed women closer to the body, or to emotions, and men closer to reason. In their refusal to endorse this reductionism, feminist scholars have been at pains to redefine biased ideological positions and have articulated discourses that delved into the blurring of boundaries of such artificial categories. Besides, recent discoveries in neuroscience have confirmed the interrelationship of body and mind, suggesting that emotions and feelings, even more than reason, shape our decision-making processes and therefore our daily lives. In Colm Tóibín’s The Testament of Mary (2012), a subversive revision of one of the most emblematic symbols of Catholic faith, the Passion of Christ, a grieving Mary recollects the last days of her son’s life more than twenty years after his death. Questioning the validity of the Gospels as given truths and refusing to collaborate with the apostles to confirm their version, she vindicates her authority to narrate her own experience as a resilient woman and a witness of the events, triggering her own healing process. In so doing, she refuses to endorse the received image of herself as an atemporal, iconic symbol of a sacrificing mother. Empowered and gendered, Mary gives shape to her consciousness through an unorthodox account that relies on emotions located in a corporeal reality that, as signifiers of truths, exist beyond given interpretations.
Bearing these aspects in mind, this discussion will explore Mary’s resilient narrative as a self-therapeutic exercise with which to redeem her sorrow and properly grieve the loss of her son. A close look will be placed at the function of the body in understanding the shaping of consciousness, with a view to dissolve traditional binaries as regards body/mind and reason/emotion. Within this framework, I will rely on the theories of neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Antonio Damasio, who argues that emotions need to be located in the body whereas thought emerges at a further stage in the cognitive process, as he has demonstrated in influential works on the emotional mapping of the mind such as Descartes’ Error (1994), The Feeling of What Happens (2000) and Looking for Spinoza (2003). This proposal will eventually aim at demonstrating how in Tóibín’s controversial The Testament of Mary –originally written for the stage as a solo play and later adapted in the form of a novella–, resilience functions as a mechanism of resistance against received assumptions of Christian thought and as a driving force in its capacity to challenge any authoritative narrative that does not rest upon the experiencing self.

The purpose of this study was to examine college administrators' transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership styles, as well as job satisfaction in the nursing faculty. It also aimed to examine the relationship between the perceived administrators' leadership styles, and the nursing faculty's job satisfaction of selected nursing schools in Zamboanga City. The theoretical framework guiding this study was the Transformational Leadership Theory first developed by Burns in 1978 and later expanded by Bass (2009), which provided a useful model for effective nursing leadership in higher academic institutions. A survey questionnaire using a Likert-type scale was administered to 98 full time faculty members. It made use of total enumeration in data collection. Data was derived from the following: survey/checklist questionnaire, the Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and the Key Informant Interview (KII). The results showed that Inspirational motivation and Idealized influence leaderships style positively relates to job satisfaction. Nursing leaders should implement effective leadership styles to promote faculty job satisfaction.

The International Association for Aesthetics’ book series, Transcultural
Aesthetics, of which I am the editor-in-chief, represents research findings and continuing discussions by members of the International Association for Aesthetics (IAA) and by invited guest-authors and guest-editors as well. The multinational character of IAA, its geographical and ethnic diversity, provides, throughthese monographs and edited volumes, a forum for the critical interpretation of issues and debates within contemporary global
aesthetics. Furthermore, this poly-facetted spectrum generates a repertoire differing in methodological perspectives, disciplines, and specializations. The association is thus addressing with its series some of the most urgent global challenges from the perspective of aesthetics: inter- and trans-disciplinary western and non-western aesthetics, geopolitical aesthetics (ecologically and politically motivated migration;
re-evaluating colonialism and its cultural heritage), relations between philosophical and cultural oriented aesthetics, media- and technoaesthetics, aesthetics of historical and contemporary arts. The Transcultural Aesthetics book series publishes individual and collective works in which historical, geographical, and contemporary problems of
understanding and developing aesthetic theories are elaborated in a transdisciplinary way, thus exploring novel fields of aesthetic discourse. In going beyond this goal, it explicitly aims, in juxtaposing traditional as well as current aesthetic concepts from different cultures, at a continuous synergetic exchange of critical ideas.

I presented a version of this paper at an early Woolf conference; I presented this version at a conference in 2009.  I developed the analysis of Woolf's Jacob's Room into my article "Indecency: Jacob's Room, Modernist Homosexuality, and the Culture of War."

In this interview, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht visits some of his groundbreaking theoretical contributions, providing an ample archeological gaze towards the emergence of Digital Humanities. The key concepts proposed by Gumbrecht are discussed as well as the new theoretical framework he developed over the past two decades towards an understating of Humanities not primarily focused on the semantic attribution of meaning.

Este libro, publicado en septiembre de 2023, cita a comunistas rusos que participaron en la revolución de 1917, pero se enfrentaron con el Partido Comunista mientras éste consolidaba su dominio a principios de la década de 1920. Un veterano del ejército rojo exige actuar contra los oficiales corruptos; otro lamenta las esperanzas truncadas de 1917 y la pérdida de la amistad y la solidaridad; un grupo "colectivista" aspira a nuevas revoluciones culturales y ; otros oposicionistas denuncian las desigualdades materiales, el regreso de la explotación en el lugar de trabajo y el progresivo autoritarismo estatal. Los cinco documentos en el libro han sido publicados por primera vez en inglés, con una introducción y notas.

James Baldwin criticism from 2001 through 2010 is marked by an increased appreciation for Baldwin's entire oeuvre including his writing after the mid-1960s. The question of his artistic decline remains debated, but more scholars find a greater consistency and power in Baldwin's later work than previous scholars had found. A group of dedicated Baldwin scholars emerged during this period and have continued to host regular international conferences. The application of new and diverse critical lenses-including cultural studies, political theory, religious studies, and black queer theory-contributed to more complex readings of Baldwin's texts. Historical and legal approaches reassessed Baldwin's relationship to the Civil Rights and Black Power movements and new material emerged on Baldwin's decade in Turkey. Some historical perspective gave many critics a more nuanced approach to the old "art" vs. "politics" debate as it surfaced in Baldwin's initial reception, many now finding Baldwin's "angry" work to be more "relevant" than "out of touch" as it was thought of during his lifetime. In the first decade of the new millennium, three books of new primary source material, a new biography, four books of literary criticism, three edited collections of critical essays, two special issues of journals and numerous book chapters and articles were published, marking a significant increase not only in the quantity, but the quality of Baldwin criticism.

In this theme essay for the addressed special-theme section in this special issue of the journal Comparative Philosophy commemorating the first anniversary of the International Society for Comparative Philosophy toward World Philosophy (CPWP), I intend to give an elaboration of the theme "comparative philosophy as a general way of doing philosophy through cross-tradition engagement toward world philosophy" ('comparative philosophy toward world philosophy' for short), which has been explicitly presented and formally stated through its recent academic-organizational channel CPWP and focuses on via the Journal's and CPWP's jointly organized international conference. The theme "comparative philosophy toward world philosophy" as a whole marks a momentous accumulating point of the significant development of comparative philosophy as a general way of doing philosophy through cross-tradition engagement regarding its "direction" dimension, through the constructive-engagement strategy in theoretic exploration and reflective practice especially since the beginning of this century.

Enfocándose en los rusismos-sovietismos, que llegaron a nuestra isla en diferentes épocas. Estas palabras ya son parte de nuestro catauro de extranjerismos; fragmento significativo en la historia de la adopción lingüística en el español cubanocaribeño. Estos vocablos no son sólo referencias filológicas, símbolos de una oralidad y escritura muy particulares, también son evidencias históricas, que actúan como códigos de acceso a la experiencia cultural soviética. The present study takes a corpus-based approach to compare ten Korean novels translated into English with another ten Korean diasporic authentic novels written in English to explore differences in the use of italics between translated and non-translated literary texts. The focus is placed on how foreign words are italicized, since they represent the identity, history, and collective memories of Koreans as the interface between translated Korean literature and Korean diasporic literature. Especially since italics as a typographical device is seldom used in the Korean language, the italicization of foreign words also serves to reveal the style and decision of translators and their differences with original writers. Against this backdrop, the present study aims to see (a) if translated Korean literature and Korean diasporic literature exhibit significant differences in the use of italics; and (b) how the choices of original authors and translators differ in italicizing culture-specific...

This chapter explores the multivalent significance of silence in Colm Tóibín’s fiction, from his debut novel The South (1990) to his collection of stories The Empty Family (2010). The chapter considers Colm Tóibín’s use of silence as an aesthetic practice and key narrative element that foregrounds the tensions between revelation and concealment, emotional release and reticence, as well as the ambiguities between knowing and unknowing, which underlie most of his protagonists’ dilemmas. The analysis pays attention to how Tóibín dramatises sexual taboos and traumas—i.e. familial homophobia and AIDS stigma—through narratives that develop within the domain of personal silences. The chapter thus identifies and assesses a discourse of silence running through Tóibín’s oeuvre, which constructs his characters’ psychology as they navigate personal and social pressures, and attempt to come to terms with their emotional truths.

In my dissertation, I have attempted an analysis of the portrayal of the socio-political status quo of the non-conforming gender identities in Badhaai Do, and Giovanni’s Room. My dissertation is going to put forth the lack of socio-political representation of non-conforming sexual orientations that have been depicted in both texts.

In this article I intend, on the basis of some previous relevant works on the issue, to further examine a range of conditions for maintaining adequate methodological guiding principles concerning how to look at the relation between distinct methodological perspectives in comparative-engagement exploration in philosophy. Environmental hermeneutics purports to be ethical by mediating between perspectives on an issue; however, on account of a Heideggerian theory of language that insists on an ontological difference between "world-formation in language" and "animal signs-in-an-environment," hermeneutics confuses the intrinsic good of living beings with the interests of a social group. Furthermore, due to Gadamer's decision that feelings are subjective, hermeneuts are destined to remain estranged from understanding the intrinsic good of non-human animals.

This article provides an overview of epistemological concepts for the analysis of medieval phenomena of entanglement, highlighting the difficulties that arise from an attempt to adequately verbalize or visualize historical, transcultural complexities. Since simple binary concepts and colloquial terms such as multi-and interculturality obviously do not meet the requirements of medieval studies, other terminological and theoretical concepts need to be found. Fresh impetus has come from the field of postcolonial studies, where, for example, Edward Said defined different qualities of transcultural processes, while Homi Bhabha coined the term 'hybridity' referring to cultural contact and exchange especially at the periphery of societies and cultures. Another fruitful model is that of transculturality, which was conceived primarily by Fernando Ortiz and Wolfgang Welsch in order to emphasize the hybrid, dynamic and procedural character of culture(s). However, most of these ideas require further clarification and modification in order to be applicable to the study of history in general and medieval history in particular. As demonstrated in this article, the metaphorical use of the terms 'rhizome' and 'palimpsest' offers a promising alternative to deal with multidimensional and multidirectional structures and to effectively respond to the challenge of how to handle complex transcultural processes and relationships in time and space. The aim of this essay is to give a meta-philosophical and meta-methodological characterization of some central characteristic features comparative philosophy as a general way of doing philosophy through cross-tradition engagement toward world philosophy. This is elucidated by presenting a holistic account of the conditions for maintaining adequate methodological guiding principles for appropriately and effectively considering different approaches to philosophy. This essay is meta-methodological in character: given that comparative philosophy sets out to explore how to adequately look at contraries (especially those from different philosophical traditions, but not limited to them, methodologically speaking), and given the self-reflective philosophical nature of comparative philosophy, exploring adequacy conditions for how to look at contraries is meta-methodological in character but also a significant part of comparative philosophy per se. The current issue (volume 6, no. 2, July 2015) is a special-topic issue on "Crosstradition Engagement in Philosophy: Meta-Philosophical and Meta-Methodological Reflections". The topic as a whole highlights one central concern of comparative philosophy and thus one of the major concerns of this journal, on meta-philosophical and meta-methodological exploration of how cross-tradition engagement in philosophy is possible, which addresses general theory and methodology of comparative philosophy (or doing philosophy "comparatively"). The discussion as presented in the current special-topic issue is especially relevant and engaging because of this: to have this journal with due focuses and emphases in the current prolific philosophy journal market and in view of the reflective need in the area, this journal is guided (in such aspects as submission topic and emphases, peer-review vantage point, etc.) by a general "constructive-engagement" strategy of comparative philosophy, as elaborated in the journal-theme-introduction essay. 1 This general approach is an "open" strategy in two connections as suggested by its name. First, on the one hand, it is "constructively" open: it looks at distinct views on the issue of how cross-tradition engagement in philosophy is possible for a "constructive" purpose and in a "constructive" way (how we can learn from each other and jointly contribute to the common goal of contemporary development of philosophy and the development of contemporary society). Second, on the other hand, it is "open" in an engaging way: through criticism and self-criticism and philosophical argumentation to implement the foregoing "constructive" goal and way, instead of taking a passive and lessphilosophically-interesting "mere-tolerance" attitude. This "open" character brings about some organizational strategies of the journal content: besides those that appear in the regular "Article" parts, special sessions that explicitly generate such engaging discussions are also given in such forms as "constructive-engagement dialogue", "the special-topic issue", etc. This "Editor's postscript" is intended to have the foregoing "open" character and provide engaging commentary on some of interesting points made in the contributing articles from the vantage point of the constructiveengagement strategy of comparative philosophy, though this writing as an engaging

Fabian Heubel's recent book, entitled What is Chinese Philosophy? Critical Perspectives, was published in 2021 by Meiner Verlag in Hamburg. It is written in German, but Heubel has discussed some of its main themes in English publications as well. 1 Moreover, many aspects of his theories, as contained in this book, have also already been published in Chinese and have sparked lively discussions among numerous Sinophone scholars. The central question of the book is: How is the relationship between the comparative and the transcultural perspective to be understood? Heubel explores this question by looking at European interpretations of "Chinese thought". The book begins with an introduction in which the author explains the importance of Chinese philosophy for today's globalised world. The first part of the book, entitled "Immanence and Criticism", is divided into five chapters that discuss and describe various fundamental characteristics of Chinese philosophy, beginning with its global position, which can be described historically as a dynamic "in-between"a concept that opens up a new dimension in the transcultural development of different worlds and cultures. The author then addresses the controversial feature of Chinese "immanent transcendence" and asks whether the main paradigm of Chinese philosophy is really as conservative as its Western interpreters (far too) often understand it. From the perspective of the "crisis of European thought", the author then examines the ideational character of the European view of Chinese philosophy and analyses its multiple visions, as embedded in the realms of utopia, dystopia, heterotopia, and atopia. Heubel tackles the specific features of Chinese aesthetics. He critically questions François Jullien's interpretation of the important concept of blandness and integrates the aesthetic theory of Ji Kang, an influential scholar and artist from the Wei Jin period, into the framework of Adorno's aesthetic paradigms. This paper aims to bring into the global ethics debate concrete alternative models of specific relational ethics developed in the context of Sinic traditions that have not yet been widely introduced into Western scholarship or integrated into the framework of global discourses on ethics and morality. Although much research has been done on certain elements and aspects of such ethical models, there have been no concrete attempts to incorporate them into a global axiological framework that could have helped humanity develop strategies for solving the current global crises we face.

When one is looking to understand a people's culture, researching its cinema is a very good place to start. Ever since I came to live in Taiwan almost ten years ago, I have been trying to understand culture in Taiwan and especially, to find a vocabulary for my experience as a Dutchman living in Taiwan. It was only when I stumbled upon the concept of transculturality that I realized I had been mistakenly taking culture as something homogeneous and typical for a specific nation or group. In this paper, I will explore a better way to understand culture in Taiwan by arguing that society in Taiwan is a community that evidences a sense of non-nation-ness through the workings of the process of transculturality, and that this can be shown foremost in its New Cinema, first and second waves, from the 1980s through the early 2000s. By taking examples from Taiwanese New Cinema feature films, I will examine the major cultural element of language and analyze the development over some time in Taiwan. To build my argument in this, I will first introduce the concept of transculturality as described by Wolfgang Welsch. Consequently, I will discuss the phenomena of language in Taiwanese society and elaborate on how the Taiwan cultural outlook as presented in Taiwan New Cinema can be explained by the concept of transculturality. For this, I will bring forward several feature films from the Taiwan New Cinema waves from which I will draw examples that support my argument. With this paper, I will suggest to redefining Taiwan New Cinema as Transcultural Cinema marked by borderlessness and made in Taiwan. And as such this paper contributes to the discussion on how to define Taiwan New Cinema, as well as the study of Taiwanese culture and society, through the research on its cinema and through the lens of transculturality.

This article reports on an ethnographic project designed and conducted as an experimental fieldwork practice. The research was a study of the modern Maya artwork of Pisté, Yucatán, that developed in the context of archaeological heritage tourism at the Maya site of Chichén Itzá, México. The article discusses how the research was designed to explore experimental fieldwork as an alternative path between pure and applied research paradigms. The use of art exhibition and installation was developed as a method of studying tourism phenomena in ways that positively contributed to community life. The research included exhibitions of art conducted as fieldwork encounters. Further, the experimental methodologies allowed the research to be designed and conducted so that the historical and ongoing involvement of anthropology in the art tradition was also studied and formulated as part of the object of study. Concepts of research positioning and transculturation are used to elaborate these principles of research design and practice.

As in past years, the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival continued highlighting Spanish and Latin American cinema. Many of these films were characterized by their slowness or the 'cinema of deceleration' (Gemünden). Prominent proponents of this new aesthetic are Sebastián Lelio's film Gloria (for which Paulina García won the Silver Bear), Neus Ballús' first feature length semi-documentary La plaga, Ana Guevara Pose's and Leticia Jorge Romero's Tanta agua and Isabel Coixet's slow-moving, science fiction Ayer no termina nunca, among many others. Of particular note was the workshop given by Argentine Lucrecia Martel.

Homosexuality has been a complex phenomenon that provokes various manners within the society. Giovanni's Room is a novel portraying the life of a homosexual individual who needs to deal with various conflicts in the society. Through the novel, Baldwin portrays how the homosexual individual, especially David as main character, struggles every day because of the insecurity and the fear related to his sexuality. There are two problems are discussed throughout the research. The first one is about the symbols and their meanings found in Giovanni's Room. The second one is about the messages conveyed by the symbols. This research is a library research applying structuralism as the approach to analyze the problem. In addition, the theory of symbol and some perspectives on homosexuality are applied to analyze the questions on problem formulation. The results of this analysis are firstly, the symbols in Giovanni's Room such as body, third class seats, Giovanni's room, cavern, dark and dirty, mist and rain of Paris, locked and trapped, decomposing corpse, and the beast that each of them depicts the conflict and the struggle that the homosexual individual needs to overcome trough David's life. Secondly, Baldwin wants to encourage people, especially the readers to fight for the life they always wanted.
