So I tried to run Eclipse, having started with both the BIRT install and
the SDK alone, and each time I get the same message, copied below. Any
help would be appreciated.

Can you be specific? What did you download?

First I downloaded the all-in-one download for BIRT. Then I downloaded
just the Eclipse SDK. Both downloads gave me the same error.

How did you unzip the download? You need to make sure that you use the
option to keep directory/folder structure when unzipping. Also, some
unzip tools (Windows built in zip file extraction for example) have
problems with Eclipse zip files. Winzip works well on Windows.

To unzip the files, I opened them in Windows (using the built-in
decompression program) and simply moved the entire folder system to the
desktop.

What kind of error did you get?

The built-in windows support for zip does not work correctly for Eclipse zip
files. Try using another one (7-zip, WinZip) etc.

Wayne,

It seems the Eclipse Project has three options here:

(a) continue to waste cycles of Eclipse folk to explain to people they
have to use a "real" unzipper, and have a LOT of disgruntled new users
fail to get started on the right foot,

(b) get Microsoft to fix their unzipper for the sake of Eclipse,

or

(c) somehow "fix" Eclipse to work with the dominant product on the market.

I am NOT an M$ fan, but I'm wondering what it's going to take to do (c).
Any thoughts?

From what I have seen, the problem with the windoze xp ZIP file
"support" is related to where you want to unzip. IIRC, it is when people
try to unzip to a location deep within their file system; it works when
they instead unzip to a "shallow" location such as c:\eclipse (I could
be mistaken, but that is my recollection from the numerous threads)
I suppose one "fix" to that could be for Eclipse to make its own
directory structure more shallow, but that seems like a major change in
the architecture and would probably touch a huge percentage of the code
base.
I think an interim work-around that would probably save us the hassle of
revisiting this topic would be to put a prominent alert about the
problem on the download page. I just filed
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=169776 for that.

Has anyone tested to see if the same problem exists in vista? I'm
wondering if Microsloth bothered to fix their crap in the 5 years' of
development they put into it...

Maybe my assessment/recollection of the nature of problem is incorrect
and an Eclipse fix would be simpler than shallowing its directory
structure - that would be a case of me being glad to be wrong about
something ;-)

By the way, I found https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=166597
that is marked as "not and Eclipse bug." Perhaps some discussion about
possible solutions should take place there. I, personally, think the
attitude is a bit too cavalier in thinking there is nothing Eclipse can
or should do to alleviate this problem.
Maybe we can get that bug re-opened with some discussion...

FWIW, this is something that I've been wanting to add to my list for a
while. I did some digging a while back and just got frustrated by lack
of any real progress. Still, I'll take another poke at it.

Another thing to consider is the Eclipse Packaging Project (EPP)
proposal (http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/packaging/) which may render
the issue moot. Ideally, the outcome of the project will be an
installer-based Eclipse that comes with a bundled decompressor (and
possible Harmony-based JRE, but I may be getting ahead of myself).

Your input on the project
(news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.technology.packaging) would be great.

Thanks,

Wayne
