This Resolution calls for a global boycott of Georgia’s self-proclaimed authorities, which have undermined the country’s democracy and suppressed dissent. Following the controversial and rigged parliamentary elections on 26 October 2024, Parliament has refused to recognise the new authorities, including President Mikheil Kavelashvili. Instead, we will continue to acknowledge Salome Zourabichvili as the legitimate president of Georgia. This Resolution urges the international community to join this boycott and support Zourabichvili in representing Georgia at European Council meetings.
The elections have led to a political crisis, with peaceful anti-government protests met by violent crackdowns from authorities. The EU must sanction Georgian officials responsible for electoral fraud, human rights violations, and persecution of political opponents. Free, and fair parliamentary elections must be held soon, supervised by independent bodies and monitored internationally. I voted in favour of this Resolution.
