MEPs want Andrés Ritter as the next EU Chief Prosecutor
The European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee adopted its preferred candidates for the post of European Chief Prosecutor.
On Wednesday, MEPs in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs voted by secret ballot on their preferences for the appointment of the next European Chief Prosecutor, the head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO).
Voting results:
Andrés RITTER: 46 votes
Stefano CASTELLANI: 11 votes
Emilio Jesús SÁNCHEZ ULLED: 7 votes
Ingrid MASCHL-CLAUSEN: 4 votes

Background and next steps
The European Chief Prosecutor is appointed by common agreement between Parliament and Council, with both institutions having preliminarily expressed their preference for Mr Ritter. As a next step, Parliament will vote on the appointment in early 2026.
The incumbent, Laura Codruța Kövesi was the first-ever Chief Prosecutor when she was appointed in October 2019, and her seven-year term will end on 31 October 2026.
