During the July plenary session, Parliament is due to vote on giving its consent to the conclusion of a new protocol implementing the EU fisheries agreement with Greenland. This agreement is valuable for EU fisheries relations in the north-east Atlantic. Not only does it allow EU vessels to continue fishing in Greenlandic waters, it enables the EU to exchange a significant part of the quotas it receives from Greenland with Norway.

Původně byla propojena se společnou zemědělskou politikou, ale postupem času se začala vyvíjet samostatně. Evropská unie (EU) hraje klíčovou úlohu, pokud jde o mezinárodní spolupráci v oblasti rybolovu. Vnější rozměr společné rybářské politiky (SRP) poskytuje rámec pro činnosti plavidel EU provozujících rybolov mimo vody Unie. Tento rámec je základem pro zapojení EU do mnohostranných dohod o rybolovu na volném moři v rámci regionálních organizací pro řízení rybolovu a do dvoustranných dohod o rybolovu se třetími zeměmi týkajících se rybolovu v jejich vodách.

Režim Unie pro kontrolu rybolovu má zajistit dodržování pravidel společné rybářské politiky (SRP). Jeho účinnost je obecně uznávána jako nezbytná podmínka pro úspěšnost této politiky. Kontrola rybolovu je pravomoc členských států, které odpovídají za kontrolu svých rybolovných a souvisejících činností, a Komise ověřuje, jak členské státy plní své povinnosti.

Financování odvětví rybolovu je jednou z nejstarších složek politiky rybolovu EU. V současné době ho zabezpečuje Evropský námořní, rybářský a akvakulturní fond (ENRAF), který má na období 2021–2027 k dispozici prostředky ve výši 6,108 miliardy EUR. Cílem tohoto fondu je podporovat udržitelný rybolov s cílem dosáhnout potravinového zabezpečení prostřednictvím dodávek mořských plodů, růstu udržitelné modré ekonomiky a zdravých, bezpečných a udržitelně řízených moří a oceánů.
